I love the size and shape of this thing! If I hadn't so many other things on my to-do list, I would start one myself :-)

Thank you very much Don, very kind & encouraging words!

Technically I still have a lot to learn; I tend to brute-force solutions instead of building elegantly like yourself and a lot of other modelers here.

Yep, I fell in love with the shape when I saw it the first time. It just looks like a mean war machine.

Engine intakes

As with the VTOL fans, the engine intakes on the template is a far cry from the original model intakes. So again I turned to openSCAD to design my own solution, then used Pepakura to unfold it.

I thought I'd document the steps I took, maybe it helps someone somewhere...

Here is a screenshot of the model in openSCAD. It is really simple, basically just a truncated sphere with a cylindrical hole cut through the middle. All basic stuff:

Here is the exported model in Pepakura:

And here is a finished intake next to the paper template for the other intake.

The rectangular template is cut and folded into the central shaft:

The flower is cut, scored and prefolded. Note that I don't remove the central disk from the flower, since this will be glued onto the model it doesn't matter, in fact it makes the next task easier since the flower is more sturdy.

Then the central shaft is edge-glued into place, and the flower petals folded in and edge glued:

Here are the two finished intakes, along with some simple intake fans fashioned out of circular paper, all re-enforced with CA:

Here is the unfair comparison shot with the original template intakes

send the change to the original designer so he can add it as an upgrade option.

Hi ARMORMAN, thanks for stopping by!

I've never considered posting mods back to the original author(s), since the mods I do are more like rough building blocks, which I then assemble and embellish. Proper scratchbuilding...

But I'll give it a go. I'm using the template you posted here:
http://www.papermodelers.com/forum/658701-post873.html
which mentions "adeptus papercraftus", this leads to me a Youtube account.
Is this the original author?

There is another member here on papermodelers.com going by the handle of sirlazelot, he/she posted a "Fire Raptor MM - PDF.zip", which seems to be a colored version of the one you posted. Is this just a recolor job?

Any help in locating the author would be appreciated!
