Here's a short spiel:

Keep in mind no camera sensor can capture a large range of different values in any given scene, so the automatic aperture + white balance adjustments that the camera makes are all trying to work together to capture as much as they can. So especially in low light, or with a very dark or very bright image, the camera tries to stretch out its sensor rage as much as possible, in some cases amplifying slight color differences and blowing them out. The algorithm isn't very smart, nor very adaptive. Cameras usually have limited processing power on board...

Quick update on this build, it is still on going. I've been on holiday and prior to this I was messing around with some different design and build techniques for this model. On top of this the site I used for image hosting has now gone. Anyway it is still in progress. Once I finish adding some parts I am working on just now I'll stick some pictures on to my google drive and see if I can link the images directly from there. Otherwise I am gonna have to find another image hosting site.

Time for a more detailed update of what's going on with this model build.


I started with the Mk1 model





This new model used some of the design and build techniques I came up with for the Donnager model, however it became apparent that splitting the model in to simpler pieces would result in obvious gaps and join locations. I went back to the drawing board and came up with a new way of texturing, sizing and splitting the model.



In the past I would split the model up to fit an A4page prior to texturing the result being the mid section of the Morrigan shown here is split over 4 pages






The new version is exported in one go and split up AFTER texturing





Same part of the ship but on a single page.


The benefit is threefold


1). I could work on more complex parts in one go removing the join locations and giving a more seamless design.
2). Textures are easier to keep consistent across matching of the model

3). Resizing the model becomes much easier. I just resize entire body sections at a time and then split it up for printing.


So this resulted in the Mk2 model.





At this stage it became apparent that the model has a few scaling issues.


The issue is that the Morrigan does not have a lot of images available and has even less screen time than the Donnager does in the show. I went back to the few images I have and did a sizing check.





Compared to the Mk2 model the most obvious issues are that while the ratio between front section length and rear section length is about correct the mid section parts, labelled 40 and 67 on the diagram above, are way to big on the Mk2 model. The model is also not correct in terms of height vs width either. It's to long and skinny where as the Morrigan is actually quite short and dumpy.


So I've gone back to Blender and done a rework of the model





I took the opportunity to do some work on alignment parts, totally reworked the mid section removing the odd angles the old version had, I also reworked the engine bell as the old version was just to long and skinny. I also simplified some of the engineering parts. It's odd because some parts will be easier to build while others a bit more challenging but the up shot is a model that I think looks a lot closer in proportions and scale to the reference images I have.


Anyway I've exported the front and rear main body sections along with their internal support structures. I've just finished texturing the rear section and will do a Mk3 test build in the next day or two and see how things look.

Can I ask what printer you use?

I tried to print some parts for the Donnager and unfortunately my Brother printer just muddles all of the details making them indistinct.

These are great models, thank you for all your efforts.

Canon TS3100 set to high detail, got any pics of what's going on I assume the textures look okay when you open them up in whatever PDF reader you are using? Failing that I did upload the original PSP files for the model which should be free of any compression issues caused by converting to JPG and then to PDF, you'll just need some software that can read them.

So I know their haven't been to many updates on this project. Main reason has been I've been doing a lot of background work on the rescaled, resized version of the model. So in one great big info dump here's an update on a whole bunch of stuff that has been going on over the last two months or so.


This is one of the first two or three versions I tried using various different build styles trying to hide join points etc and at the time was going to be the most likely candidate for a final build.

however once the railgun mounts were on I started comparing images and scales against data available for the Morrigan and vs my Rocinanate model and the conclusion was that this model was just turning out to be to long and too sleak in design. The Morrigan is quite a short dumpy vessel and the proportions were just not right.


So it was back to blender to do some redesign and rescaling.

This turned out to be a lot more involved that I expected as a lot of the shapes and sizes are connected. Change one thing and you have to change the rest so that it all fits. At this point I also opted to try some different designs to make the build 'easier'. Odd word as the build is actually harder because of the changes but it helps considerably with aligning parts and hiding folds and joins so the results are better.


- Front section was shortened and made wider
- Rear section was shortned with the front and back proprotions changed. It was alos made higher and wider
- Railgun mounts were slide forward
- Intakes made long and wider
- Engine bell redesigned to make it wider and shorter.


With the redesign came the build. I was trying a few different set ups to try and get the build looking clean, the right shape and strong and lets say things did not go well. This is one tricky ship to get stuff to work on.

That's just a selection of a few of the five or six failures to get the front module sized, built and fitted. Issues ranged from sections not fitting, being to delicate being totally the wrong shape or size, odd angles, I must have gone through four or five different internal support structures looking for something that was not only stable but gave the part the correct fit and shape. It seems if their was an issue building this part I found it. In the end I hit gold with this part.

I used a simplified internal structure to get the shape. I removed the stays at the front of the structure as these really caused issues with fit and finish which means that the very front part is a little weak, however once the comms and weapons pods go in it will strngeth it considerably.


The part still needs a little tidy up at the edges but everything fits, it's the right shape with no odd bits, twists or other issues.


Next was the redsigned main body. Given the issues I had with the front I was expecting this to be a real nightmare, in fact it went together really well .

This isn't anywhere near finished, but the general shape is done and it needs a little tidy up on the detail but I can finally test to see if the redesign scale and shape is more suited to how I think the Morrigan looks.

What amazed me was how well the front and rear sections fit together, given all the issues I had with the front I was expecting issues when it came to joining these two parts. The image above shows the two parts joined with no glue at all holding them together. The fit is almost perfect.


Finally I thought I would throw up a few images of the new scale model verse the old one, it becomes quite clear when you see then together the sizing and scale differences.

I've opted to repurpose some of the parts I have already built, so the rail mounts will be transfered from the old model to the new one, as will the docking bay (that's already been done you can see it on the underside image above) I've also opted to add some additional detail to the model that wasn't on the original design, mostly shaping parts on the main body. My objective will be to update this post a bit more frequently as the build continues.


I am also going to see if I can find a different image host as the one I was using has closed down which has just given another issue to resolve, for now I'll stick images in to my google album.
