U.F.O. Interceptor Pilot - Build Thread

U.F.O. Interceptor Pilot

This was a fun interesting part of the model to make. I couldn't find a good pilot at the right scale for the model, so I designed and built one to suit.

First off, I studied the UFO series for reference, and captured a bunch of images of the pilots so I could study their costumes, helmets, seat restraints, and so on. I think this thread will appeal to others that love UFO

I decided to make the pilot's head controlled by a servo from my radio control equipment. I thought it would be good for maybe down the line if I decided to make a video of the Interceptor with the canopy lifting and the pilot turning his head. It would give a good feeling of a "living" body in the cockpit

Here's a sketch I made to help nail-down all the pilot related details. I added as much detail as possible all in paper.

I scanned a picture of myself, and shrunk it down so I am piloting the Interceptor!

The pilot's helmet has a hinged visor so it can be positioned as desired.

Pilot is a full project in and of itself!
Movable features are cool.

I don't know about the model, but that wiring looks pretty tricky too. And, and you're building the pilot too as a model, oh with moving head !!!🙀🙀🙀

I really enjoy working on this model. The Interceptor finished up much bigger than I had planned especially with the missile attached at the front. I originally had a pack of 4 AA sized batteries in the back of the body but that made the thing way too tail-heavy and it would tip backwards without the missile attached. It also put a lot of strain on the undercarriage. So, I replaced the power source for the model with a tiny lithium battery pack... so much better and lighter. I really like the look of the original Interceptor model designed by Mike Trim and Derek Meddings.

What?????? C'mon you must be kidding me! So much research, patience, hard work and intelligent use of tricks, tools and supplies! Im amazed!
I really loved the use of post-its to hold two pieces together without damaging the printed side of the model!
This is one of my favorite ships so its a pleasure to see the process of such a great build of the Interceptor. GA would be impressed!
