U.F.O. Interceptor - 1/12 Scale Paper Model

U.F.O. Interceptor

1/12 Scale Paper Model

This is my version of the U.F.O. Interceptor that's based on the model by UHU. As can be seen from the pictures it has been significantly modified.

The Interceptor has been up-scaled and works out to be 1/12 scale (approximately). This required a lot of re-design of the skeleton of the model to provide more durability. I have always been a huge fan of the U.F.O. TV Series from the 1970's so this for me, was a very interesting project. Because of all the extras I wanted to add, there was no way that I could fit them in the original small scale, so I upped the size.

The model has radio control to operate the open and closing of the canopy. The canopy has never been shown operating in the series or the movies so I had to think a lot about how it should look and work. I also designed and build a paper model pilot plus his outfit to make it look nice. I couldn't find any substitute out there that would look right. I made the pilot's head turn to the left and right under R/C control. The pilot's visor also opens and closes. I have some short videos on YouTube of it all in operation if you are interested?

I had to have all the interior of the main cockpit lit-up so I used fiber-optics and LEDs to get that all working. The main engines at the back of the Interceptor also light up to simulate the running of the propulsion system. The laser/machine guns at the front of the model also light up to simulate them being fired.

Everything is powered by a tiny lithium battery inside the fuselage accessible by an access hatch I made that is held in place by several rare-earth magnets. A tiny switch controls power to the model. I have additional features that are half-complete so I guess its a work in progress.

This is the start of the build Working on the skeleton of the model first.

Considerably thicker section to provide enhanced strength. Holes cut to allow for fiber optics and wiring.

U.F.O. Interceptor - Build Thread

Jumping ahead a little here to get a taste of the finished model

Here are some of the fiber-optics located in the cockpit and fuselage.

The LEDs are all taken care of individually because of the different colors needed.

Those smaller cereal boxes were perfect for making a custom stand for the interceptor as it was being built.

Good amount of space for the electronics.

Yes, it sure kept me busy for a year or so. It was a model I wanted to build from many years ago.

Can't wait to see this build completed.
You know you'll have to build 2 more for a complete flight of Interceptors. (Only joking).
Grew up with UFO, and have the complete series on DVD. Wonderful stuff.😸😸😸

Looking forward to this.

How big was the actual prop? Was it 1/12 or 1/6? Anyone know?

Nice!! Yes, UFO was such an awesome series! Way ahead of its time. DVD boxed set! Wow, that sounds great!

Yeah, I'm not too sure I'm up to building 2 more of these right now
