Some of those viper designs sure look a lot like the Buck Rogers Fighter from the movie and short lived TV Series. The early Cylon designs definetly remind me of the Star Wars Stormtroopers.

One of the images is titled "Colonial Viper (used on Buck Rogers)" (pic 27 of 48) so I guess it IS the Buck fighter!

Mcquarrie recycled the unused design for Buck Rogers.
Why not? It's a cool design and it was his.
