Stargate SG-1 - Milkyway Gate

So after giving up on waiting for WanRayen to release his incredible Stargate model, and not being satisfied by the other simple models out there (a couple of which use Wingdings or Greek letters as gate symbols), I decided it would make a pretty easy first design.

At 1:72 scale, its simply a layering model, using 110lb cardstock and 1mm card laminate. This post will serve as kit announcement as well as directions.

Cut out the three main pieces: the front and back base layers, and the extra(optional) inner ring layer, freeing the small pieces.

On the reverse side of the back, add sunken layers for the chevrons to sit on and then laminate 1mm card.

Laminate the front to create a solid ring and ready the edge strips.

Adhere the edge strips to the outer and inner edges. Note that on this beta build I used .5mm but it's a bit too thin. Not only did the edges hang over the front and back, but I thought the look is too thin anyway, so I increased the edge strips' width by 30% on the release model.

Cut and fold the chevrons (or cut off the edges and edge join after) and layer into position, front and back.

Just 16 more times (not shown yet)!

Included with the model but not pictured are the puddle (two sides) and an iris that is assembled in layer. Cut to fit snugly in the gate for change of gate status, or affix permanently.

Finally, enjoy!

Model will be available for download in the Downloads section as soon as it is approved. PDF contains both the 1:72 scale version shown here, and a 1:48 version.

It looks good. Are you going to build a DHD to go with it?
When will it be released?

Model is already uploaded, just pending moderation approval. Link is at the end of the first post.

My plans for the model are, in no particular order and no particular timeframe:

  • Offworld (stone) base
  • Offworld DHD
  • Earth gate stand
  • Pegasus gate
  • Pegasus space gate with thrusters

If I may be so bold as to suggest, having the inner-ring with the symbles be able to turn. Other then that, it looks very good. I am looking forward to the other gates.

I wanted to do that, but couldn't find an inner ring image without the chevrons already super-imposed, so the spinning inner ring would have images of the chevrons spinning too.

Plus, at the 1:72 scale, you only have about 4x20mm of space on the inner ring between each chevron, not really enough space to get a finger in there and slide the thing left/right.

Maybe for the 1:48 scale version in a second go. But for now its (imho) quite a bit more detailed than the currently-available front/back/edge with incorrect graphics wargaming versions, such as this one:

After seeing the pic you posted, I do have to agree with you. Yours looks a lot better. Like I said before, you did a very good job on them. It was only a suggestion. I do understand why you did not do it. I have dowloaded it and have added it to my LONG list of models to build. I am looking forward to the other gates as well.

Looks like the download is approved. Enjoy!

If anyone wants to do a build-thread on the 1:48 version, I'd love to see how it scales up and any issues you run into.

This is an AWSOoooooooooooooooooooooooM design. I can't wait to build this one. I just found files for the Gateroom on a website for download over the weekend. Now if I can just find the SG1 action figures at the toy show in Greensboro NC when I go.
