USCSS Nostromo
From The Alien Franchise, USCSS Nostromo!
So I decided to start modelling this ship recently. It seems like it will be quite an exciting build. Just not too sure how to do all the piping without getting such small pieces. Maybe Someone could shed some light. I finally got myself a pepakura license so I need to finish this :P So this is what I've done so far inbetween work and more work. |

So far so good. Haven't got an idea for the piping except making a lot of little fiddly parts. Hopefully somebody will have a good idea.

Been tweaking little things and started on the mainbody.
A quick measurement and scaling suggest a 1:500 scale. for easy detail. But that makes the ship 67 cm long. So I think Ill just make it 1:1000. which is about 33.5cm long. |

1:500 would make it easier to scale up to 1/350 for compatibility with some other great ships plus I think Jan's Sulaco is in 1/470...

For the piping try rolling some solid paper tubes real tight, like a lolipop stick, then soaking the area that needs to be bent in some water then gently form the curves over a round object that has a diameter of the required size or maybe slightly smaller to account for some spring back. Leave the part bent until it dries out. It should retain the shape of the curve needed. You could reenforce the curve with some CA then sand the shape smooth and then apply the required color.
Make the paper stick over long. That way you have room to secure the ends with an elastic band or some string so you don't have to hold the curve with your hands. It also allows you to trim the part to its final size. If you can find some ready made sticks with the proper diameter it would eliminate the step of having to roll the sticks yourself. I have done this with some lollipop sticks (4mm or around 1/8 inch (0.125") diameter) bought at a craft store and it works. You might get some wrinkling on the inside of the curve and the paper might split or tear on the outside curve. The wrinkling can be corrected with some sanding and the splits and tears can be corrected by mixing some tissue paper with some PVA glue to form a pulp then fill in the damaged areas. After everything has dried reenforce the piece with some CA then sand smooth. Just one suggestion.

On this site: Saturn V paper model (1:96) there's a Saturn V LES (Launch Escape Systen) downlodable model. With the latice works parts comes very good and detailed tutorial how to make paper tubing and bend it. Might work with this model too. It's different technique that SCEtoAUX suggests but one needs many solutions for different needs. ;-)
