you can messure it out for the most models over the width of the saucer!
I believe they're designed to be 1:1700, but if you print them out on 8.5"x11" they will be smaller due to automatic resizing by the computer. The numbers for most Trek ships other than ones named Enterprise are up for debate anyway, so I would say that 1:1700 is close enough for government work.

But YMMV.

I have gotten all but the nebula, and re sized them to 1/1400, my scale. The defiant is almost impossibly small, 3.37 inches.

I was pretty sure that with the exception of the new Enterprise E, they were all supposed to be 1/1900 scale.

It is not easy but possible. Here are some pics of my build.

The Defiant's original length from the Deep Space Nine Technical Manual is 170 m, but Bernd Schneider explains in an article on his excellent website why 120 m is more likely. That's why I've assumed this length for the spaceship. This was resulting an overall model length of 7,1 cm or 2,8 inches at 1:1700.

I still have the pics for my build report which I've posted years ago to another board. Think I will post them soon.

Panzer,

How did you add the registry markings? I've tried all sorts of ways to get registries to look good on Zosho's models and the always look awful.

I used Photoshop, with a special starfleet font. Maybe I'll upload some pictures.

Very nice work Panzer.

I used Inkscape, a vector editor, to add registries to his Akira and Constellation (the latter still not built :() and described the process on the Connie at the Z forum (signed as "c_furuti"). I'll look for it.

I've converted them into jpg files (I recommend at least 300 dpi) and added the registry and name using the text tool of Photoshop. This program (and I think all good graphics programs) has a tool for writing text in a bow. Then you have either to reduce the layers to one or change the text into a graphic layer. This is necessary to "paint" the letters using the fill tool because most registries since TNG are black with a red edge.

Examples:

The pics are too large to embed so I have to link them.

The font used for the registry is "Starfleet BdEx BT", for the ship's name it's "Federation Bold". Both can be downloaded from "Tal Shiar" for free.

The TOS hull font for name and registry is Airborne or Airborne II, just depending from which one of both you like more. The fonts are free downloads from Charles Casimiro Design. Both "Pilot" fonts on that site are only for the Enterprise from "The Cage" or other Pike-era ships if you want to design some.

Yeah, the Starfleet BdEx BT is the font I use too. Though you don't have to convert them to jpeg to work with them in photoshop. I tend to leave them in PDF.
