cant find the post and the link, but i guess i know what you mean! the cooler rips of the Ent-BoP are a bit different to the TNG-BoP! the rips have only one turning point! the 23rd BoP had a turning point and a slider hole!
at the Ent-BoP is the space between the rips so tight, that you need no stopper or holder, because at 1/1700 is the weight very low! On the picture you can see the the parts which i built before the disk damaged!

Interesting solution! Being the over-thinking mechanical nut that I am, I would have attempted to replicate this setup in miniature:

Bird of Prey Hinge

It doesn't hurt that he posted the complete templates at lo-res; at this scale the low resolution doesn't really matter.

Not really, because in the front view there is no hinge, or connections of any kind, from the wings to the hull other than the baffle plates themselves. In the original Kirk-era BoP there was a set of hinges that the wings moved on, with the baffles merely riding on top. If you didn't care about accuracy though, your idea would work fine, especially with the high level of friction those baffle plates create. I've got a set of acrylic plates for my AMT Bird of Prey and despite the smooth plastic surface there is a LOT of friction between them.

It's essentially a reflection of two different things. Nimoy wanted the BOP to look like a strongman flexing his muscles and it kind of hearkens back to the F-14's ability to chang it's wing profile when going supersonic.

i meant technically in the trek universe.
i have heard the 'foootball player' reason many times, and the ships do reflect that kind of attractiveness?
the 1701 is loaded with sexuality.
so is the klingon d-7 tos.
so,
wings up-reactor feeds warp engine, cloaking device and disruptors.
wings down, full power to weapons, including warp plasma torpedo.
