Hey guys... I'm just getting into papercraft and 40k both.
I'd like to try some of those Patoroch models.
What do people use for the * and the ** parts?
In some model plans, he writes 140-170gsm for the regular parts, and "carton: 0.4-0.6" which I assume to be 0.4-0.6 mm cardboard for the * parts - is that correct?
Does ** then mean, two of those glued together?
Sorry if this question annoys people - in that case, please just delete it.

Which one are you trying to build?

Oh, I have not decided yet... my question was unspecific, because I thought that probably what works for one model, works for all the others as well.

I'd like to eventually build the Thunderhawk, but realistically, I should start with something smaller, for practice.
So I thought about building one of the Immolators, or the Predator, but there is no paper strength information for those models.

I checked some others right now, for example for the Chimera II, which I would also be interested in, and it gives very specific measurements, namely 1mm and 1.5m, which seems to suggest that he uses 5mm cardboard from somewhere and doubles/triples it.

I'm a little overwhelmed at the moment, with my lack of experience...
Maybe I will just go with the Predator (for which I seem to recall having seen a crafting guide in a forum somewhere) and try some cardboard I have lying around, without fussing over 0.1mm this way or that way and never starting anything.

But, of course, I am grateful for any suggestions for a complete newbie

I built his Medusa and it is nothing but layered paper. Admittedly, I went the extra step and double printed pages so that I could make all the raised surface detail (and thereby layered it). The whole thing is card stock from Wal-Mart, so not the great high end stuff some use. Also note that the pages are formatted A4 with very slim borders.

Once primed with a sandable auto body primer (one that has a scratch filler), it was quite sturdy (although you could still crush it if you desire).

That looks great! Makes me want to try that to...
But it seems to me I should maybe start with something simpler - the Medusa seems pretty advanced as opposed to, say, some tank that is essentially just a box I'll start simple and work my way up.

In the plans for the Medusa, it says
"Paper: 150-170
Carton: 0,4-0,6"

You said you used "layered paper" - does this mean that you doubled your paper for the * pieces? Or tripled?

Sorry if I am slow on the uptake...

My point was that you don't need anything special, you can do with regular card stock you can get off the shelf.

If you look at the pictures I posted closely, I did layer some areas more than the instructions. Most notably the treads and c-shaped gun elevator mechanism. Other than that, it is pretty much straight off the plans.

Just have fun and start building. If it doesn't meet your standards, damage it and make it a piece of terrain.

Thanks, I will do that and report back when I can show something.
I started with the Immolator, and have to say that I misread it somewhat.
I was afraid that using the wrong cardboard thickness might make the model unstable or too stiff and so on ... but it turns out that the thicker parts are mostly the armor parts that go on the hull, so it is basically a matter of taste how thick I want them.
Anyway, I'll stop worrying and start building now

I happen to prefer Wal-Mart cardstock. It's cheap, and saves a bundle when I take colored models into Kinko's to get printed. (Just make sure they print on the smooth side of the paper).

Great Work, Armorman.

Thank you!
