Foliage Opinion

I'm building Batley & Pearson's kit for Pratchett's Unseen University. So far I've resisted the temptations to "improve" the kit. Recessed windows/doors and so forth. But the printed foliage has bothered me from the get go. It doesn't look good to my eye and photos of the construction agree with my eye. So, yesterday, I tossed paper modeling philosophy to the dogs and started adding foliage using common model railroading products. My eyes are happy enough this morning that I will likely continue.

BUT, I need some other eyes to confirm or deny what I'm seeing. Since my wife is out of town I'm turning to youse guys. Opinions? (Naked wall chunk on the lower left beside foliated wall chunk with a fuzzy building behind.)

I think the printed foliage (on the part on the left) looks very good.
Its shaded well for a 3D effect and not too brilliant in colour that it takes over.

But your addition of actual 3D foliage really looks good
although maybe a little thick/deep in places?

Maybe half the amount?...allow more of the printed foliage to show through?
I think its starting to overpower the paper model.
Just my opinion.

Yes, the foliated wall chunk looks much better than the naked wall chunk.

Many years ago someone came up with an uncolored version of the Observatory tower with a 3D spiral staircase. I do not remember who or when and cannot seem to find the files, but do recall that it looked OK but would require a lot of coloring and matching of textures to fit in with the rest of the model.

Nobody ever said paper models have to be 100 percent, pure, unadulterated paper.
(Okay, some obseessive-compulsive person probably said it once but never mind.)

Wire bits, metal bits, wood bits, even plastic bits are part of our medium. It's all about the craft and the fun. Everything else is just details.

It is possible to fabricate three-dimensional foliage out of paper (see, for example, Abby Benner's flowers and plants plants), but it is also very time consuming.

Your addition of scenicking material makes the model look very good, and most important (and beyond argument), if your eyes are happy, then it's an excellent outcome.
