Hi Clive,
You sure are right about the Motte.
If I remember,,,
There was a full grown tree growing in the bottom of the motte.
It did not reach the top of the motte.
We commented on that fact.
Hey,,, by the way,,,
Besides the Castle itself,,,
We enjoyed the gift shop that is there too.
Best Regards,
Gary

Just starting to experiment with colours and scale. These are the corner towers ... need a bit more detail yet!

Okay here's an update to my progress on this project.

I have had numerous conversations with English Heritage and other historians to obtain the best accurate feedback on the construction and design methods concerning the keep at Castle Rising.

I've drafted up most of the main architectural elements to the main keep and now I am in the process of making a working 'sketch' model to get a sense of scale and proportion! I have laser cut blank 'un-rendered', non -detailed sections for speed.

*The only way to make the finished kit will be by hand-cutting.

Next up will be massing the roofs and fore-building sections. Once I am happy I will turn my thoughts to masonry detail, texture and colour.

I estimate 120 - 130 component parts will be needed to make this model comprising layered parts forming windows, structural facings and the ornate masonry details in the kit.

Further on down the pipeline will be a finished PDF with collated parts to cut out with assembly instructions.

Update:

So here's a bit more progress to the 'sketch' model.
I have added roof level (which in the rendered version will need to be set lower) with two of four small roofs. Worked out and added some external concrete structures and other small details ... more to come.

Hi Clive,
Love the way your creation is coming to life.
Can't wait to see the final result.
Hey,,,
I mentioned that my wife and I had been to Castle rising.
When my wife and I were shopping in the gift shop, we
picked up these postcards there along with other items.
I ran across them today and thought I would share them with
the other folks that have never seen the real site.
Sure is a huge mote !!!
Sorry about the quality of the pics'.
I scanned them the best I could and saved
them as a jpeg to post here.
Hope you enjoy them anyway.
Best Regards,
Gary

Hi Gary

Thanks for posting the photo's of Castle Rising.
Things are moving slowly along, I've re-developed the walls and formers, the crenelations look much better this way too.

Here's a few photo's of the development of 'Sketch' model no. 2. I'm happy now with this so will now concentrate on improving the roof structure before moving on to the fore building, then it will be on to colour's and details.

Clive

Roof structure improved. The west face has now been developed showing the unusual 'blind' arcading.
Work has started on developing the fore building layout.
