A Japanese Shrine

I started working on a simple Japanese Shrine model.

After research I decided to go with this geometry design, which will give me the option of making a larger version too!

This is the "extended" version ...

So far I have the base finished. This is the "easy" version. The outside railings are all filled with wood plank background as filler so you don't have to cut out all the bars. Also the stairs are just a simple flat plane with some clever texturing appearing as stairs. I want to build a better version once I am done with more detail, but for now this fast version is great to test things.

After the 3D render I found that the height of the platform and the railings was too high compared to my research pics, so that is why I changed the geometry in the final build. I am going for a smaller (forrest?) shrine and these seem to not be so high as I thought. It looks more pleasing to me that way :-)

You have certainly captured the essence of a Shintō jinja, Chris. I presume there will be a torii out front?

I have been shying away from a torii for quite a while. I would want to make it true 3D (there are a few 2D flat ones out there) and have yet to tackle that geometry to make it buildable for my purposes.

Maybe I'll make one for me and see where it goes.

Yes. I see the issue with trying to make a seemingly-simple-but-actually-complex torii, but I hope you eventually succeed. Meanwhile, all the rest of your Japanese structures, watercraft, and accessories are quite wonderful.

Here is some update on the progress. I have completed the walls. And to take the picture I have reused an old roof from an earlier Samurai Castle Tower set. I wanted to see what it looks like with a roof., although the roof I will design for this one will be a little different and with wood shingles texture.

And here is a peek at the interior.

Now I will start to tackle the roof, which will be a bit of a challenge, to make it fold-flat, so that it can be assembled/dissambled for flat storage. Wish me luck!

Thanks gotham! I think now I see a light at the end of the roof-tunnel :-)

I have found a way to make the roof fold-flat-able.

This is what it looks like assembled.

It is combined out of these two main components ...

The core part is the extension of the walls. I have decoupled it from the walls so I can interchange other 4x4"base walls however I like. It's function obviously is to hold the other module, the main, wide roof in position.

And this is what it looks like flat-folded...

Now it all fits nicely into a box or envelope for storage and transport. The only thing missing is some additional flaps to help position the outer roof into the core frame. And then I can start the texturing.

I want to more or less reuse the texturing from the Asian Bell tower but I have found that there are also shrine versions where on top of a wood shingle layer there is additional reed. So maybe I will make this as an optional texture layer.

In any case I am very happy I could make this work.
