Slavonic Fortified Settlement

To give it it's ABC title.

It is a series of 6 Diorama starting in 717 with just a few buildings and goes up to the modern town. I think it's based on a real town, but I'm not sure because looking through the ABC magazine back numbers for the last few years is a bit complicated when the magazine is in Czech, although the pages are translated.

I saw a few bits of the series in the magazine some time ago and contacted Miroslav at paperModel.cz to find out if ABC had published the whole series in one "book". He said "no" so I asked him to contact me if/ when a book was published. At the time I didn't realise that the series wasn't complete. I now realise that the final pages were in the April 2019 Magazine. Miroslav contacted me to say that he now had the complete series. I asked him to send them - little knowing how many pages there were. I received a folder with a pile of pages from the magazines almost half an inch thick. I can't remember how much it cost, but the postage was a bit more that the pages!

This is the first of the series year 717, at a quick look it seemed quite easy, until I realised that the area was on 3 levels. The big advantage was the fit of the parts. The terraces are made up of about 15 parts and are glued to the upper level and the base and each piece fits exactly to the pattern of the base - right down to the bits of grass!

I haven't mentioned that these models are from Minibox 1:300 so the buildings are quite familiar. The only change I made were the trees I didn't like the supplied ones so I substituted them with "left overs" from some of the old Minibox dioramas.

So, one down - 5 to go - there won't be so many words next time.

You can start your search here if you have the time or the stamina !!!

Cheers
Mike

That is pretty sweet, sir. Can I ask which years are going to be represented?

This looks like late Roman period but before Christianity.

Being from ABC it's likely Czech, maybe Moravian.

Buildings in Roman outposts in Pannonia (modern Hungary) looked a lot like this.Local materials used, stone foundations, that sort of thing.Of course layout was very different.

Lots of buildings still build this way in Czechia with modern conveniences added.

What a great project!

I hope you build them all so I can see this settlement develop over the centuries.

Reminds me of David Macauley's City and the series of books by Xavier Hernandez, Jordi Ballonga, illustrator Francesco Corni, and other authors.

The dates are 717, 1217,1417,1617,1817 and 2017

I wonder why they chose the 17's

Thanks for the comments, I only have enough card to make one more kit - I'm not sure it's worth having more card delivered. So do I make 1217 or go straight to 2017.........

A trip down memory lane. I remember back in 717 when I was but a humble farmer trying to feed my family while paying the local warlord with food for taxes. It were a struggle.

That looks to be quite a nice model set showing the developement of the settlement over the centuries.

Does 2017 have any identifying marks? It would be kind of nice to know where this is, or if it is fictitious

The kits are the development of castles, I've found the first article in ABC and it looks as if they have used different castles for each date. Here's the first article - there are links to the later ones.

I've started on the second build of 1217 with still a lot of "landscaping"

Cheers
