@ Kevin: you are absolutely right. The one thing that attracted me to this model is the cluster of smaller buildings around it. It gives the model depth and makes it so much more interesting to build and look at.

@ Mr. Cronk: The model is still available. For instance you can check the site of the publisher: www.leonschuyt.nl. I bought my copy at the church itself for a very, very decent price.

The build continues with the remaining side roof panels. The round section is a bit tricky and it’s best not to glue it in one go. Glue one tab at a time, each time ensuring proper alignment, and the result will be fine. I also laminated every roof part on the inside with thin cardboard. This kind of reinforcement is a must, not only for stronger roof panels, but also for overall stability during installation and better – less flimsy - looks of the model.

Then at this stage, the entire building can be closed by part N1. For a good fit I again used thin cardboard in between the top tabs to reinforce and align the walls at the right angles. Don’t ask me why I wrote the dates on the cardboard – it’s an old habit.

Note that I also laminated the inside walls of the church as much as possible. It makes handling of the model during the build much easier. Also, the top roof panels have all been reinforced with thin board, resulting in a good and straight fit.

The only parts left now to complete the roof section are the gables and some 16 roof bays. The latter ones are time consuming small annoying parts to cut, glue and install….

A quick update: All remaining roof details, buttresses and ornaments are finished now. Especially cutting out the ornaments took a bit of time. No fitting issues, except for a small misalignment between two mating parts of the roof fence, which is not particularly visible and significant. See for yourself in the last picture.

Next will be the bell tower and spire and then model is ready.

Will be having little time for modeling in the days ahead so the next installment may take some time.

Thanks gents! Yes indeed, only the bell/clock tower to be done and the spire, but still a bit of work involved. Finished the first two tiers of the tower and finally done with those buttresses and dormers on the roof. But, as a change, roof gates need to be cut out...

The tower parts do need reinforcement, especially the base plates, so I cut out a few octagonal pieces of cardboard and they certainly keep things in the correct proportions.

Alright, 10:43 am on the four clocks for the next couple of years and on to the rest of the tower and spire. Almost done...

The final parts to be done make up the third and fourth tiers, crown and wind cock. The tower tiers are octagons consisting of 8 separate wall parts, except the fourth and smallest one, which is one part only. The larger ones can be shaped easily but the fourth can best be shaped by using a circle template before gluing in a cardboard former at each end.

The crown is a tricky and delicate part. I glued each of the eight "arms" in opposite facing pairs and used UHU Hart for this purpose. This glue dries fast and is completely transparent. I used a thin metal pin as central core and fixed the wind cock on top. The highest part of the spire!

Finally a small feature that's not included in the model but nevertheless a nice detail to add: A flag pole with a Dutch flag! The orange banner is usually added on birthdays of the Royal family and our national day.

Well, that completes the build of the St-Bavo church. Adding varnish and a touch-up of the baseplate will be the last things to do so within the next week or so I will post pictures of the completed model.
