Wyvern's Architecture Builds
I'm going to use this as collection thread for architecture builds. Except for my Wild West buildings; they'll remain in their own thread.
I finally got something built. It's been years. Ray despaired that he'd ever get to see me post a build again. But here it is. This is Monte Models kit of Mount Vernon, George Washington's home. The kit has a 1969 copyright, and the print probably dates from the 70's. Monte Models stopped being produced sometime in the 80's, I think. It was a straightforward build, except for the cupola. The eight-sided cupola roof was a very fiddly piece, and the cardstock had become very brittle with age. I had not scanned it in advance, and it literally fell apart. I substituted a flat roof on the cupola; it still looks pretty good in my opinion. The model is mounted to a piece of painted foam core. The house actually has two front sides- the Pediment side, which faces the Great Lawn and has the drive where visitors would arrive, and the Piazza side, wich features a long covered porch, and this side faces east overlooking the Potomac. I've included a recent picture of the mansion- recent as in Sunday, November 3, when I was there last. Last edited by Wyvern; 11-20-2019 at 09:17 AM. |

Great to see it! A very nice little build.
I toured Mount Vernon many years ago, when the young men were mere boys. It is indeed a splendid place.

Pretty thing for the age. How was it packaged to avoid yellowing of all that whiteness?

Nice looking model despite the ravages of age.
I remember driving past Mt. Vernon when going between Ft. Belvoir and D.C. back in the early 1970's.

That's a fine historical model. I've visited Mount Vernon several times over the years, first in the early 50s and most recently about 20 years ago. Always an enjoyable experience.

My wife and I joined the Mt. Vernon association when we moved up here 2 years ago, and go every eight weeks or so- not necessarily to take the house tour, but to explore the grounds and attend special events they have. My wife especially enjoys the times when you can sit and visit with Lady Washington. It’s amazing how they are still learning things about the house and it’s grounds. Currently there’s a restoration project underway to stabilize-and re-open to the public- the ice cellar complex, which runs underneath the bluff the mansion sits on.
