Really nice model Erik - and very different and interesting. Well worth modelling.

I am glad that I have never had to serve in something like. Would feel like an "instant" coffin!

Job Done!

Thank you Beachead, Don and Kevin! I agree, this type of constructions very much resemble a group coffin and it must have been pitch dark in those concrete shelters with no lighting.

Anyway, in the mean time the build's finished and herewith the final pictures. Cutting out the soldier figures took most of my time in this last stage. Inside you can see the commanding officer sitting over his 1940 map of the Island of Dordrecht and a soldier's magazine lying on the table. The print is such detailed that I could actually make out which part of Holland was shown on the map.
Other soldiers are on guard inside and outside the bunker and a medic is waiting for events to unfold. In case gas would be used, the men are prepared for it.

In the last pictures you see a few real bunkers. Because of the soft soil they were built on piles and as over the years to peat settled, the foundation and pile top ends are exposed now. Most of the bunkers have monumental status and some ten years ago, one of them was cut in half to expose its interior. A walkway runs through it.

In the last picture you can spot me walking towards the bunker that arose my curiosity about interior and function of these small concrete buildings, and which formed the inspiration for this thread...

It's been a very enjoyable build and you may wish to check out the TeKaMo site / TeKaMo, which also shows other examples of military objects that can be build. I certainly wish to build another one somewhere in the near future .

Thanks for following!

Erik

That really did come out nice Erik. The figures also help to put it into perspective.

Thanks for the shots of the real thing.

I am surprised how much it really sticks out in real life - very conspicuous! And with only the sloping top, it must have made a very tempting target!

Hi Kevin, a belated thanks for your reaction.

Nowadays many of the bunkers are clearly visible in the landscape but that is because the surrounding trenches and other obstacles have been removed over time. Some of them however, are still in their original surroundings, with trees and bushes for cover-up, which makes them more difficult to spot. In some instances they were camouflaged as farmhouses. But indeed, in a flat landscape they could quite easily be spotted.

Erik
