Notre Dame

This is my first thread for quite a while. It's not because I've not made anything, but those I have made haven't been good enough to show off!
Poor kits and poor building I guess.

This is a new kit from Schreiber - with all the cathedrals made by Schreiber I was surprised it took them so long to launch this on, but thankful they did.

The main problem was the flying buttresses. The kit says glue card to the back of them. It wasn't till I started making them that I realised I had to cut them in half then join them together so you end up with two thicknesses of card and paper. The problem was that it wasn't quite thick enough to cover the white spaces on the pillars and the reference numbers. Also it takes a lot of cutting through four layers. I had to do a lot of painting to cover the white areas.

Apart from this every thing else went together well. However, for the roof I cut off all the tabs and glued strips of Balsa wood along the roof platform. A good example of the saying “the devil is in the detail – all 28 buttresses have at least 5 parts each.

Cheers
Mike

I clicked on your photos to see an enlargement of your work, and there is no doubt you have done an outstanding job. The flying buttresses gave your problems but they turned out well--intricate, delicate, and sturdy at the same time. Great work!

Looks real good despite the "minor" problems faced.

I like those Screiber-Bogen architectural models.
The one complaint I have is the dashed fold lines. I usually run a dark colored pencil along the line to fill in between the dashes. It kinda sorta hides those dashes making them stand out less. I check it out on a part first to see if it look OK. It usually looks good even on an outside corner. Instead of a dashed line that draws your eyes to it there is a solid line that is in most cased less conspicuous.

Well done, Mike. I did a Notre Dame by L'Instant Durable but did not dare exhibit it. On the plus side, I can now say "flying buttresses" without giggling.

That's a nice piece of work, Mike. I'm only glad that you built it, and not me.
