HO Scale Painting Co.

My latest project: a scratchbuilt paper model version of Bar Mills Models' "Oakleaf Industries" -- The walls are Clever Models' shiplap siding, roofs are sheets from Clever Models and Paper Creek, deck is a planking sheet from Smart Models, office doors and windows are from my "digital parts box." The scale is 1/87.

The door and window screens are made from very fine dark brown mesh fabric. I cut out a window frame, glue it to a small swatch of the mesh, trim away the excess fabric, and glue the screen onto an assembled window. Trimming without distorting the frame takes a very sharp blade, lots of pressure on the steel straight-edge, and three or four passes of the blade with very light pressure -- not much more than the weight of the knife. I found the mesh at Jo-Anne Fabrics. I bought a third of a yard -- enough to put screens on every door and window on the layout, but I will probably find other uses for it on larger-scale models.

That is going to be a gorgeous layout, if everything else is up to the standards of your buildings

Fantastic! A beautifully realistic little model.

Nice looking building and great idea using that fabric for the screens.
I wonder how much a building like that would cost if it were a plastic kit purchased at a model RR store.

That technique of using fine mesh fabric for the windows is very clever! Does it allow you to light up the models as well without providing too clear a view of bare interiors or tabs?

I suppose it would. I don't light the interiors of my buildings.

When I've made enough progress worth showing . . .
