Cathedral of the Redeemer

I wasn't sure if this should be under the "found on the Internet" but as it's not free, I put it here

While looking for the Kremlin Gates I found this Cathedral on the Papermodelling site

Paper modelling

The first time I came across this was in a documentary many years ago about the Soviet times in Moscow. This cathedral was pulled down by Stalin - well on his orders anyway. I have never forgotten the pictures of people using crowbars to remove all the icons and other fixtures. Most were burnt outside.

Then, In 2000 work started on rebuilding the Cathedral Companies were "encouraged" to donate funds to help the rebuild and buy- where possible the original fittings. It was completed a few years ago and looks amazing.

From then I have been hoping a model would be mad.

Stalin originally decided to build flats on the site but instead a swimming pool was built. I know whick I prefer! Must go - I have a kit to order ;-)Cheers

I have so many kits and I promised myself that I'd build the two most recent models first - I bought them while on holiday a few weeks ago.

However I have a feeling that when I see the Cathedral.... I may change my mind ;-(

Cheers

Rob,

I thought I'd answer your question here... as it's relatd to the Cathedral ;-)

The postage seems to be reasonable - I bought the Cathedral and one of the Kremlin Towers - They are a much better scale than the Kremlin!. It will be interesting to compare the two!

I exchanged emails with the publisher and he tells me they are planning to issue about four more of the Towers - they are currently up to #4 some of these contain more than one tower.

I gave him my "wish List" two Russian Palaces near St Petersburg and one in the Crimea. The latter is "Livadia" well known for two reasons.
1. It was the winter Palace of the last Romanovs.
2. It was the venue for the "Yalta" conference, between Churchill, Roosevelt and Stalin.

Cheers
Mike

Many thanks, Mike. Glad to know of this Russian designer/publisher site. There are certainly some splendid architectural (and other) subjects to tackle. I see they even have Sikorsky's Ilya Mourametz. Will look forward to a Cathedral of the Redeemer build report when you are ready to tackle it. Cheers and the best for Spring, on a warm, sunny and glorious Easter morn.
