Hey guys, I thought I'd share my current build. I'm sure some of you have seen it.

The Saturn V Launch Umbilical Tower (LUT). It's been scaled up from 1/96th to 1/60th with on going additional detailing.

The Colby Crane

The Colby Hammerhead Crane alone measures out at over 2 feet in length!

I've started work on the swing arm supports. They are measuring in at 48+ inches. It was a daunting task to get the folds right with such lengths but using the edge of the table to create my fold lines worked out nice. Now that they have dried overnight I see one has a very slight bow to it (in the center), but this can be fixed once mounted on the LUT. It's a simple matter of gluing each end first then using a straight edge to line it up then glue the center down...viola it's straight.

Mike

It's a little over 7ft right now. I still need to add the MLP legs which will add a few more inches. I've deliberately kept them off because the MLP is easier to slide around on a carpeted floor without them.

I've made some changes and additions to the Colby Crane. You can't have enough railings, so I've added more :D. I also re-drew the lightning mast in PS and cut-out all the openings. I wasn't happy with the look of a "solid" mast.
All swingarm support girders and swingarm receiver girders are now installed. Work has begun on the swingarms themselves. More photos to come this weekend.

Swing Arms #1 and #2 have been installed along with the gantry leading to Swing Arm #1. I decided not to use what was supplied in the kit, instead I edited the gantry floor and stairs images in Photoshop then installed my rails. This helped keep the look uniform.

Yup, it's a kit. It's the one found on eBay from DM Productions. I bought the 1/96th scale version and enlarged it to 1/60th. I've made a ton of changes and modifications and still have many to do....but that's what all the fun is about right?

Hey Guys,

I made great progress tonight (sorry Julian :) ). Swing arms #5 and #6 are installed (details still need to be attached) as well as Gantry #5. I finally finished cutting out and installing all the level railings! I also replaced the gantry support brackets with more scale looking "L" shaped ones and installed the swing arm shock absorbers. I'll post photos of all this stuff tomorrow.

Hello Everyone,

Sorry for the lack of updates as I've been busy the last few days. All the Swing Arms are now installed as well as one of the Power Carrier Array's (PCA's).
I hope to have the remaining gantries (3) installed today. They are not too complex so it should be a smooth installation.

Hey Guys,

Well I've been adding more and more details to this red thing. Work continues on swingarm #9, making the railing fold down flat when the arm is fully retracted.....just like the real one.

http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z150/blanchettephotography/gantry9side4.jpg

I've also added the EES platform and escape cable boom, a few more sections of railings need to be added as well as the ramp support brackets. The upper left side of the photo shows the scratch built swingarm support structure.

http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z150/blanchettephotography/gantry9side3.jpg

And finally a cool little know detail that, back then, only a few lucky people got to see. Sorry it's hard to read in the photo but it is legible in person. There's also an Emergency Egress Map located between each elevator door.

Anybody know where each levels EXIT signs go?

Sorry about that.

Here's a few shots of my current progress.

I've rebuilt the MLP and added ribbing and folded out an "edge" at the bottom, I didn't like the way it was just flat all the way down to the bottom. I also edited out all the pipe images from the sides and started applying "real" pipe.

MLP additional details.

Hey guys,

Side 2 Environmental Control System (ECS) piping is complete for the most part but not yet attached to the LUT. I still need to add flanges at the expansion joints and add the brackets that held the pipe to the rack.

I elected to build the rack assembly in one long piece. It will still need to be removed to connect the piping at the various levels. I thought it would make that task easier.

Here's the overall view of it.

http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z150/blanchettephotography/pipingside2.jpg

All level 0 cable trays, both vertical and horizontal, and the deck mounted enclosures are glued in place. It was a lot of work considering they really won't be seen way down there. But as I move up to eye level it'll be nice to have that consistent look of the trays all the way up.

Any details on these cable trays George.... I'm pretty sure that they're not part of the kit?? Did you design them?? if so how did you fit them, because it must be difficult to hold those supports in place??

Also... How long did it take you to make all those tubes for the ECS.... I'm just stunned by this....

Julian,

The cable trays were not part of the kit, I designed them (see photos below). Each one is individually glued in place. I elected to go that route instead of cutting larger holes in the floor.

The ECS system tubes are made with paper straws, I'm not that crazy to roll all those tubes. :p

Well, gravity is your friend in this situation (upside down). I flipped the entire LUT upside down while working on the horizontal trays. I managed to flip it back upright without ripping off any swinrgarms. :D

One can't have enough railings. :D

I got tired of looking at a "plain" MLP so against my best judgment I installed the perimeter railings. I run the risk of damaging them while working on the rest of the LUT, but there's more where these came from and are easily replaced.

Hello Everyone,

It's taken me a while to get to this stage but I've managed to compile enough info to design and install the horizontal cable tray on level 30 feeding up to level 60 and the Instrumentation & Control Distributor. It may not be 100% accurate but it'll have to do. I've moved onto next one which starts the levels which are straighter and hopefully will install quicker.

Thanks guys,

I've made some changes to the model and corrected a few things. First I changed the flat "M" braces to a more scale like tubular type and of course included the gussets. (photo 1)

Next was the corner support replacements including the two middle ones on sides 2 and 4. I wanted to add a more 3D detail to the original flat folded pieces and, although they looked good, I felt the additional detail was in keeping with the modifications I have been making to the LUT kit. (photo 2).

That's it for now........

What is your MLP made of? Is it paper, or something harder to support the LUT and rocket? Because I made my MLP to of wood because I want it to support my 4D Vision Saturn V...
Just asking.

EDIT: If the MLP is wooden for the reason stated above but everything else is paper, does it count as a paper model?

siurano
02-13-2014, 07:01 AM
I seen a few models that contains wood as some support, I build an old car that the author recommended to use toothpicks as axles. To me if the parts are a minority and and there are for strength and support it is a paper model. Maybe a purist doesn't like it. Enjoy your build!

George,
What is your MLP made of? Is it paper, or something harder to support the LUT and rocket? Because I made my MLP to of wood because I want it to support my 4D Vision Saturn V...
Just asking.

EDIT: If the MLP is wooden for the reason stated above but everything else is paper, does it count as a paper model?

You should not look so doggedly, http://www.raumfahrer.net/forum/smf/Smileys/yabb/rolleyes.gif the main thing is that you like your model, and with wood reinforcement you're on the safe side. http://www.raumfahrer.net/forum/smf/Smileys/yabb/cool.gif

Thanks siurano and spacerunner!!! By the way, spacerunner, the way I made my MLP was partly inspired by your's. Of course mine will probably be less detailed!

Not yet, but I will probably make one soon, when I start adding detail. Right now it's a big wooden box.
