Micromodel - Ann Hathaway's Cottage

A couple of years ago I decided I had to make the very first Micromodel - ARC 1 - which is Ann Hathaway's Cottage.

Largish for a Micromodel, it proved to be a great build - very straightforward and enjoyable, and easily done over a couple of weekends.

When I was in the UK a little later on a holiday I then made a trip specifically to see the actual cottage (due to the fact I had made the model and was was curious to see how it resembled the real thing - and was suprised to see how much the real thing resembled the model!

Or should I rather say - how accurate the model was!

At the time I did not take any pictures of the build, but I have a few of the finished item......... and somewhere some of the real thing!

Also interesting to note that as far as I know an Original Anne Hathaway's cottage still holds the record for the most expensive Micromodel Auction on Ebay.

I like that very much. I have make I think the same building from Fiddlers Green, but it was not so nice. It differs also in detail. I think the FG model has straw hutches over the windows. Hutch is probably not the word but I don't know what to say.

Good story and fine model.

Micromodels were well represented at the International Paper Modelers Convention last weekend. Gil Benson brought a bunch of MM railway models and Linda Kemp had a substantial collection of tiny buildings from cottages to castles from various sources.

I passed up a chance to buy this model a few months back,
it was real cheap on ebay (probably a copy though)
...now I wish I hadn't!

its a nice little model.

And if you have been to the Cottage, it makes it extra wonderful!

I visited the Cottage back in the early 80s.
The second floor of the cottage is a beautiful wooden floor
that is made just from solid hand hewn timbers.
Maybe 10" thick beams?..,laid side by side to create a ceiling and floor.
When built, they must have been tightly fitted,
but over the centuries the wood beams have shrunk and worn
and the gaps in the floor are quite amazing!
1-2" gaps allowing you to see through quite easily to the main floor!

But still a beautiful site to see.

There is some old buildings at "home" made from hewn timber that with age have shrank. Mostly when you visit those now they make for you to take off your shoes or to wear paper covers (like you see in a hospital) on them to avoid more wear. The centuries of walking have worn down grooves where people normally walk.

A very nice build of a special dwelling place - your Micro model is far better than the FG version IMO. Glad you got to see the real deal :)
