These engines have drawn me in for curiosity sake, I did a quick build at work but didn't turn out and aborted, decided to try again now that I can see how it goes together, here's the aborted version

I was thinking of displaying it next to the model rather than in it, though

It looks great. It would a nice diorama to have the engine displayed next to the airplane.

I think so too, Don, and opened up the file in photoshop for a little recoloring and will give it another go. I thought it would look good with grey case, black valve covers and oil pan for more colr variety, we'll see

this is small in size, but the parts fit and the instructions are ample. I think the order
is fine the way I'm going, and would not put the turbo parts above the block until the
valve covers are on rather the hope it will line up, cause it might not...

here's the progress to present, have found a couple things to quibble about, but no real issues (can't complain about a free model-to quote my 11 year old)

I built Alin Osarik's Merlin engine in 1/16.5 scale. I think I have about 80 hours in it, maybe more. Not a beginner's project but very rewarding. A few minor fit problems but overall an outstanding kit. I used p*****c rod for the engine mount, and copper wire, aluminum rod, and aluminum tube for the hoses, lines, and piping. The engine stand is basswood. The builder's plate came from Alin's site. The whole thing sits on a 5x7-inch base. The Spitfire profile (http://0viking0.deviantart.com/art/Dundas-Spitfire-Mk-1-Profile-49964494) is by Croatian artist Vjekoslav Ranec.

I'm still in awe of anyone who could build this kit in 1/33 scale!

Thank you, Alin, for a wonderful kit. http://www.zealot.com/forum/images/smilies/thumbsup.gif I want to tackle your Daimler-Benz 601 (in 1/16th scale) one of these days, but not too soon. And I'm still thinking about enlarging the Halinski Spitfire cockpit to sit behind the Merlin.

And the GPM Bismarck beckons. (Now there's a nice, easy 2-year project! http://www.zealot.com/forum/images/smilies/26.gif)

Still crazy after all these years,

Definitely should be part of a hangar diorama! Looks really, really nice!

That is very pretty work David! Must really look cool in person at that scale. (it isn't hard to build in 1/33 you just have alot of parts left over)

Here are two more photos, of the top of the engine and of the firewall/mount assembly before the prime mover was installed.

Thank you all for your compliments!:D

I haven't the foggiest idea what that means, but I'll take it as a compliment.

What Dan said. Superb craftsmanship and a beautiful model.

Incidentally, Glen and David -- yesterday, I was with a group of birders from the Cape May Bird Observatory when a parasitic jaeger flew in and landed on the beach. Definitely not an everyday occurrence at Cape May, New Jersey!

Great Don! That's a good bird off the coast here, too! I've only seen them harrassing gulls in the air, not on the beach, ever. Your kingfishers are nice, too, love the sound on a quiet day at the lake. We have resident ones here and they land about in conspicuous places where they can fish. The young ones chase the parents about still, but are fishing for themselves. Osprey are still here, but not for long. The kingfishers are hardy and still hang around when the lake is frozen!
ps; Kim saw a pileated at our house today, and it was quite tame so nice views, of course I'm at work...

You birder guys are cracking me up. I'm almost tempted to take that up as yet another hobby - but would that lead to wooden bird carving and even less time for real job type work?

Yep, and now that I know what the acronym means, the merlin is in that category.

Ha! So many hobbies....

Does reading and posting on internet forums count as a hobby? If so, I think that's my biggest one - since I can partake occassionally while working...

I found a place to put the pictures of the 1/33 Merlin 45 model from Alin, free in the downloads put there by Leif Ohlssen, an old thread, really old, ha
I think my early build went into a Spitfire model, so this is the only Merlin engine I have, not very big so would be very cool to enlarge as was done above by Sakrison in the thread also. Does look better in person as is very small model...made a simple engine stand as one might use for display or working on the real thing, fun.

Looking at this post a bit confusing this was the engine I made to go with
the Mosquito model... tagged to a past thread..
Just finished yesterday ...

Beautiful model of Leif's Merlin, and it was great to read back over this old thread, see your great models, and remember birding at Cape May.

Thank you Don for kind words, I have to admit to reading older threads now and then and enjoying some reminiscing.... although I have some things I'd like to get to still and starting to itch to make a radial engine again. .. or some intriguing project... :)
Thanks Gary was quite a fun build
