I figure I had better stop "Trolling" and post something I am working on. This is where I am at on the Lilla Weneda at 200% of the original. I had Bronchitis which turned into Pneumonia and then got the Flu so I have been going slow lately. So here she is, glue smudges and all. She is about 2' 6" long.

How did you scale it up, A4 to A3? What paper did you use?

Looks great so far!

Zathros

Thanks all, I scaled it up using Photoshop 6. I use 8.5 by 11" paper, 110 lbs. It needs 27 pages of parts, by the time your done scaling and re arranging parts so they fit. There is an accrued intolerance that springs up. I used Photoshop to fix some of the bottom panels. The intolerance most likely is caused by me not sticking to a proper reference point but all in all it is coming out O.K. It is my first attempt at a paper model this big. I used framing paper, which measures .050" thick, this may be where the intolerance came from:rolleyes:, as it is .007" bigger (roughly speaking) that a millimeter. "I shall endeavor to persevere". I just noticed all of the "scuzz" under my TV set, It is an 36" Toshiba and impossible to move, the world now knows.

youse guys with your big ship models... very impressive. Is it 1:100?

rickstef
03-07-2008, 12:32 PM
the original was 1:100

Zathros
03-07-2008, 01:43 PM
Would that make it 1:50?

member_3

Yes, it would be 1:50 if you doubled the 1:100 model.

Tanxs, I will be starting the topside tonight. I am almost tempted to use the hull as a plug and make a R/C boat version, almost.

Ohmigosh! I'm a troll too...(better start cuttin' cards!)...
That is quite a display!, I like the stand she's on, but I wouldn't trust myself with glue droplets near those CD's.

Being a dummy with photoshop elements, could you please direct me as to where I can find out how to resize and re-arrange parts as you did with the Lilla Weneda? Thanks in advance.

Zathros
03-08-2008, 11:42 AM
The lilla Weneda is at 300 DPI. I made a "New" canvas at 11 x 8.5" and made the new resolution to 150 DPI, this effectively doubles the parts. Using the Lasso tool I would " Lasso the part I wanted and copy and pasted the parts to the "New" canvas. Some parts, as the long side panels must be cut and pasted in 1/2 to fit. I used the "Move" tool to move and rotate the parts till they fit. I ended up with 27 pages of .BMP's. This information was given to me by other members of this forum who generously educated me. When you are done you must "flatten" the image then "save as" whatever you wish. I chose .BMP.

Thanks again for the help.

Zathros

@Tom: I made a mistake, the original is at 600 dpi so you would set the new canvas to 300 dpi, which will double the size.

I hired a couple of builders, they are a little uptight about the pay scale. This part of the build may require reinforcing ofthe side walls as 110 lb. stock is not strong enough. I guess I have to think now.

I hate when that happens. I try to avoid thinking at all costs :D

But I prefer your big ships but your tall (big in a special sense) women.
abouth your work; it looks good but at this scale you must modificate and detail it very much!!!
I hope a big result too !!

I used plastic paper protector sheets for the windows and ran is full size for the from of the cabin to provide strength. The cabin turned out rigid. I am going to build the whole cabin separate to facilitate construction and possibly make it removable. I can then use the cabin to hide my favorite chocolate from my wife, a very slim but voracious choco-holic.

Zathros
03-12-2008, 07:07 AM
I have to trim the windows a little on the inside, that is where the defect is. This happened when I made the curve for the cabin, it caused a shift in the paper. I just noticed how bad it looks in the picture, looks better in real life. I used .040 matte paper for the cabin roof.

Side shot with cabin in pre fit. I like the way the windows came out. The ships weighs about 2.5 lbs so far.

I have been thinking about lighting her up. There is a couple of places to put batteries. She's certainly big enough. She might look good at night all lit up.

I use this website (http://ledcalc.com/) for wiring leds in models. It not only figures out the resistors you need but how to wire it and the amount of batteries. I love leds because they burn cool, hardly ever burn out and you can power a bunch with very little power. Check it out!

I can then use the cabin to hide my favorite chocolate from my wife, a very slim but voracious choco-holic.

If she's anything like my wife, she'll find the chocolate, she has a chocolate radar!

Progressing nicely!

Zathros

Choco-dar, a genetic predisposition in women. A few more pics. Thanks for the link Toddlea, I use that website one also. Lilla is coming along. There is a lot of laminating to heavier stock which leads to an intolerance that accrues, but you just have to keep ahead of it and it all works out. Many thanks for the support. The Deck house is not yet secured in place.

Zathros
03-15-2008, 07:12 PM
Pilot House almost done. I am going to keep the Pilot House removeable so I can access the inside for electronics (lights,etc.). The roof over the main cabin section is done also.

Pilot House innards. (Is that a word?).

Thanks Boosed. I feel like part of the forum now that I am posting builds. It is nice to get support. I have learned a lot making this model. I will probably be able to finalize my Ekranoplan model now that I am getting the hang of it. My son (8 years old) wanted me to make a gunboat out of it but now that it is taking shape he likes it a lot. I told him I'd make a destroyer next for him.

A couple of rear deck pics. There is a lot of doubling of parts. The stanchions for the railing had to be doubled as they were too week. Also the accrued intolerance rears up and I will have to add a 1/16th strip to fill a gap where the railing attaches to the main deck house. It isn't perfect but the overall appearance is adequate.

@Old Troll, Thanks, I wasn't sure if i was posting too much or if anyone was even looking but it there seems to be a fair amount of views which is heartening. I have a bad habit of starting things and not finishing them but I am determined to finish this, especially now that I am under the scrutiny of other members. No slacking allowed. I have learned a lot and I am trying to figure out what to build next. I have read that Lilla Weneda is now in Sweden renamed of Juliana. If anyone in Sweden spots her it would sure be nice to see of picture of her. Her name now is Juliana. She was moved there in 2001 I believe.

I haven't been on in a while in the ships section and after your note in my thread, came to take a look at your build. Your 200% version is coming along quite well. For me, this was a very enjoyable build even though some of the parts can be quite small.

I had looked at lighting the interior of mine, but the smallest Led's available to me would still have been visible, and I was to far along to mount batteries internally. In your's with the additional size, this would look real good.

I'm glad that my build pictures are helping and look forward to seeing yours completed.

Have a good day.

Maybe I can suggest to improve funnel exhausts with little sections of paper-pipe ? simulating motors gas outlets, like the real thing...

Papiro, not done yet, I just added the venting on the forecastle, I will do the main funnel next. Just a couple of things more and she's done. Thanks for the input. I have to do the edging where the hull meets the deck and the rigging, the propellers and rudder etc., getting close.

I am having trouble finding chain for the anchors and another bout of Bronchitis (which doesn't deserve a capital; "B") has slowed me down. I just need to do the rigging and the propeller and rudders and she is done. I should have her done by Friday.

10 years ago I was building a balsa model of the "America" tall sip. The hull was destroyed by accident and I saved all the fittings. I actually found the chain and some good scale rope in the barn this morning right where I left it. It really adds some depth ( as far as detail is concerned) to the model.

I was surprised to see this thread resurrected. The "Dusty TV Stand" is still a work in progress but is coming along quite nicely, sadly, I lost the download link but it is very easy to copy, just get a stand, sit back and do nothing! :)

My "in-laws", who never like anything I do, really liked this model, so I know it is the work of the model designer, not me.

I really respect the members here for their work and support and thank you for your compliments. Thank You.

How did you scale it up, A4 to A3? What paper did you use?

Looks great so far!

Very nice:

Another way I use as I am not as skilled with graphics as some of you smart guys is, MS Word. I cut and paste the sections and just re-size them. I often imbed a reference bar so my re-size is correct for each section. After a while you get pretty good at it. Every model I have done this with came out perfect. The upside is if something does't fit you can easily re-size it again.

Zathros
06-22-2009, 05:17 PM
I used Photoshop to scale up. I ended up with about 27 pages of 11" x 8.5" paper. My dog ate the lifeboat. I still have to finished off the rudders and prop and build a new life boat.

Beautiful job so far. I look forward to the finishced product.
