Now I am working with Roman Vasyliev's Nieuport 27 model. I'll try to show you some steps of this repaint. This model is absolutely new, it hasn't been released yet.

So Step #1. Preparing model.
As you know from http://ecardmodels.com/shop/images/imagecache/142x200_card%20model%20design%20cover.jpg (http://ecardmodels.com/shop/product_info.php?manufacturers_id=19&products_id=865), Roman uses for making models Rhinoceros and Corel Draw. I do not need Rhino, my workspace is just Corel Draw and Photoshop.

Open the model in Corel and delete all color parts. We will add color a little bit later.
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_KWwnIoBlSqo/S4KdZM5otQI/AAAAAAAAA3s/ittjcW7pWa4/01.jpg http://lh3.ggpht.com/_KWwnIoBlSqo/S4KdZHQE6uI/AAAAAAAAA3w/hrji2l5PuLw/02.jpg

Now we have to export all parts to Photoshop. I use the *.eps format, so in Corel: select all parts from model, which we will repaint, press <ctrl>+<e> (Export), choose the "EPS" format. Do not forget to point the "Export this page only" and "Selected only" checkboxes.

The next window is:
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_KWwnIoBlSqo/S4Ke_GwyxBI/AAAAAAAAA34/PmaQyZ31Qq8/03.jpg

Open the Photoshop or every other rastr editor. Make the new file, with width and height like page with your model (I use A4, 210x298 mm). Resolution - 200 - 250 dpi (the best for printer), bachground color - white (#ffffff in RGB). Use command file-place to place eps files with model's parts.

Step 1 is finished.

The first part of future plane is engine mounting plate:

Can I ask is there any reason for doing it in the corel draw first?

Of course you can. I am doing this because Roman makes his files in Corel Draw, and he gives me files in this format. But Rhino could send files directly to photoshop (using .eps or .ai formats)

why export out of CorelDraw into PS, when you could do all the work in Corel?

I prefer to use Photoshop, and it looks more comfortable to me. But if you like only CDR, of course your welcome! This is only my own opinion :)

I didn't say use only CDR (CorelDraw)...I was just curious as to why go to the trouble of saving and exporting files to another program when you can edit all your bitmaps and textures in Corel...if you have CorelDraw, then you also have CorelPhotoPaint (which is the same program as Photoshop).
(In fact, CorelPhotoPaint is a lot more user friendly in my opinion)

if you are using Adobe Illustrator, then thats another topic.
I know that Illustrator has some unique features.

Corel Painter is also another excellent program.

Your textures and colours are well done.
Its nice working with base Corel files though, isn't it?
...but thats too easy!
Wait till you start with a non-vectored / non-layered file! lol

you obviously have the skills to continue on your own, but if I can provide help with anything don't hesitate to ask.

I am not sure about Corel, I really like Photoshop. But - and I think you agree with me - there is no difference between programs. If you have idea, you could realize it using different instrument.

Yes, sure.

Now I am working with such file. It ia just a little bit more difficult and more slow.

more great texturing!

but can I offer a small bit of advice?...
a lot of the shading and highlighting is a problem.

you are applying really great 3D highlighting and shading to a 2D object.
This looks great, bringing a 2D object to life on paper and on the screen.

...but this 2D object will be assembled into a 3D object
and will then have its own natural 3D shading.
This will be in conflict with your shading, depending on the angle of viewing.

it works great for flat surfaces to create 3D surface textures
but the overall shading and highlighting of curves and rounded surfaces is wrong.

For example in the last post, the wings are shaded drastically on the leading edge.
This creates a great 3D visual effect on a flat surface.

But the final 3D assembled object, will have its own 3 dimensional effects and
if my light source is from the front, then your shading will make no visual sense.

just an observation...hope you don't mind

I use photoshop CS. I don't think you can load .ai files straight into it. Not sure about .eps I'll have to give it a try.

I've load bmp but the lines become to thick and lumpy.

What is the best format/setting to work with either colouring or re-colouring?

more great texturing! ...

Thank you, Dave!

Just today we with Roman discussed this question. The problem of modeling that we are trying to recreate nature from other materials (in this case - a paper) and of course in a smaller scale. (Generally I am the master of fine arts, but I’ll try to theorize less :)) Scaling objects makes them less visible. So, to make them is more appreciable, it is necessary to raise partially their brightness. Further, about shades. I do not create volume by shades, I try to "help" to create volume by shades. If we look at shades on a real object and on shades on models, we will see an essential difference. Actually, I try to do only those shades which can underline volume of already assembled model in the future, and particularly can visually correct potential errors of assemblage (it is a question of 48 scale, not each fingers are capable to collect ideally such fine details)

As a matter of fact, modeling is an art of visual illusion.

The best format is that we have :)

To place .ai or .pdf or .eps or other file onto opened .psd just use command "file -> place" (I am speaking about Photoshop).

Step #2 – Making textures

Please remember, we do not need the same textures like at the real plane. We need textures, that look like the same ones :) So … Making wings.

At first, we need the donor canvas texture. Use simple canvas picture:
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_KWwnIoBlSqo/S4ZCMHZQbaI/AAAAAAAAA64/L-hJZq6LbDM/05.jpg

I have to smooth color and saturation. For this I am marking parts of picture (using lasso tool) and with commands “edit -> adjustments -> levels” and “edit -> adjustments -> color” making them homogeneous.
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_KWwnIoBlSqo/S4ZCMSLNe-I/AAAAAAAAA68/PWv2H1K_wMw/06.jpg

The next task is to make it seamless. Please take a look at mine tutorial (http://ecardmodels.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2205).
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_KWwnIoBlSqo/S4ZCMQy6EiI/AAAAAAAAA7A/q5b6yxzYMzk/07.jpg

And now create the big file filled texture. This is our donor.
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_KWwnIoBlSqo/S4ZCMp7AdbI/AAAAAAAAA7E/IBKENWpH29Y/08.jpg

Make it lighter and less saturated:
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_KWwnIoBlSqo/S4ZCNHSE03I/AAAAAAAAA7I/-mRssNH_AVE/09.jpg

And now painting. I’d like to show you painting wings.
In Photoshop (or other editor) create the new file with white background. It is not necessary to make it white but I like white paper, so …
Using command “file-> place” import wings contour:
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_KWwnIoBlSqo/S4ZCX0mksMI/AAAAAAAAA7M/VEFW8GFLnAc/10.jpg

Place at the lowest layer out donor and resize it if it is necessary. We need something which look like a canvas texture in the right scale.
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_KWwnIoBlSqo/S4ZCYDZyLLI/AAAAAAAAA7Q/dsxzrurOqK0/11.jpg

Crate new layer and fill it with color:
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_KWwnIoBlSqo/S4ZCYC_a-gI/AAAAAAAAA7U/T1-ju11h9BQ/17.jpg

And if you need, paint the camouflage:
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_KWwnIoBlSqo/S4ZCYUJ_gnI/AAAAAAAAA7Y/X0j_cRa8V2k/18.jpg

Use the layer properties to make the wing more real :)
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_KWwnIoBlSqo/S4ZCYY5wnOI/AAAAAAAAA7c/Uuaf8uTdUW8/19.jpg

And if you want, make new layer and using brush add lighting effects:
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_KWwnIoBlSqo/S4ZCc1rZF-I/AAAAAAAAA7g/tT85VJkKSRg/20.jpg
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_KWwnIoBlSqo/S4ZCdOYZ1eI/AAAAAAAAA7k/Gays3VzaF2k/21.jpg

Activate the layer with wing contour, using Magic Wand tool mark whit places and clear them at all layers.
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_KWwnIoBlSqo/S4ZCdG5Nb5I/AAAAAAAAA7o/9UAuI5MtDW8/22.jpg

Add cockades.
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_KWwnIoBlSqo/S4ZCdQP32DI/AAAAAAAAA7s/SD0HqkssT1A/23.jpg

All other parts are made the same way. You need just your head, editor and your hands. And, of course, idea :)

Yes the canvas texture, I for one was getting complicated really with thinking of finding good photos of the planes

I also like the idea of "make it look like". Before retiring I was an engineer and tend to overthink things. "That's too easy; let's make it complicated..." Hazard of the trade I suppose. Gotta stop that.

Thank you Anna for sharing your secrets. You did well. Are you a teacher by chance?
