The Medieval City by Richard Vyškovský, published by ABC

I have titled this thread The Medieval City because that's what its called in the catalogues. I couldn't translate the actual title, but we normally associate a city with having a cathedral, which this doesn't, so it is really a town.

This is a massive project that needs a base of at least 1.5 x 1 metres (5 x 3 feet)!
2 x 1.5 metres (6 x 4 feet) would give you a more comfortable surround.
There are 82 houses, 2 churches, 2 town halls, 1 synagogue, 1 water mill, 3 fountains, 7 town gates, 16 towers and bastions, 1 bridge, and 1 Renaissance chateau.
The scale is about 1:160 (N gauge)

A very impressive project. Where are you going to display this town when it is completed?

If it's not too late - add color to all cutting edges (for instance with water colors) before putting them together and some afterwards. It will make a big difference on such a large project.
All the best

Thanks for the advice. I had already thought of is that I'm lazy, I have little time to devote to the construction of this model. I'm doing at work during lunchtime. At home I can not be followed with two daughters. :)

Sorry for my English very rough. Italian School :):)

Hi Marco,

I logged on to PM to ask if anyone had built or was building this monster of a model and here you are building away. My best guess for translating the title into english is "Imaginary Town Area". Does your model come with the 'Zamek' or castle? To build this the size of the pictures in the book it will be more like 1.5M x 2.0M (5' x 7' for us imperialists). I have a separate shop where I expect it will reside as the house is way tooooo small for something this large.

I will start my own log and we can compare notes. This will take a long time to reach the end, my book says 6,210 parts. We should keep the blade and glue makers happy for at least a year, probably more.

Thanks for the post and happy building,
George

First of all I must say I'm glad to see that there is another fool who wants to take this adventure.
Turning on the web I found a tread on this address The Medieval City (ABC) - Zealot Hobby Forum (http://www.zealot.com/forum/showthread.php?t=149792)
and here I found the work completed

Gorgeous work!

I hope that I will not cause too much thread drift if I ask,

Are watercolour markers or pencils preferred, or actual brush and paint?

I am now scouting out my rented condo space for potential 3' x 5' work-in-progress area

The wife is not pleased!

Disregard the pencil question, I have spent time in the Tips and Tricks forum and my questions answered there.

My personal tip: use watercolors and the white and a fine brush. Spend time to color all edges - it will pay off at the end and makes the difference.
Have fun

Hi A little update. I'm continuing the construction of Městská Brana. Given the low strength of the paper I'm thinking of reinforcing the inside of the tower with the card.

Marco,
Nice work, Your building assembly is moving faster than mine. I am only on third building. Did your book come with the "zamek" or Chateau? Thanks for the many sequence photos, your sequence of assembly is a bit different than mine. Should I make more photos so we and others can compare methods? I think assembly sequence is very personal and that the main thing to enjoy the effort and get nice results.

Hello, thanks for the compliments. Honestly I have not found an ideal assembly sequence for these models. I am currently trying to assemble all the doors and windows on the structure and then mount the roof already complete. The difficulty is to join the house to the roof perfectly.

Marco,
The nice work continues, very good. You are about 3 or 4 building ahead of my build, I am finishing the Digital Navy Lilla Weneda ferry boat with many very tiny pieces. When that get too much I work on the town, the windows don't seem so small after the boat pieces.

Kevin - The book (a tome really) is about 4cm thick and weighs over 2 kilos! Expect to pay a lot of postage, it is worth it as the book itself is a work of art.

Marco,

RE: roof attachment.

For most roofs I build them complete with dormers etc. Then glue only one edge keeping it well aligned and let it dry. Then it acts like a hinge and the rest of the edges can be glued more easily.

Thanks for the advice, in fact, with the last case I had already applied this technique. Now I'm starting the second boundary wall and I noticed that I have to build structures with small pieces of wood

Thanks for the information on where to locate this model. However I don't understand a thing on that site (I dont speak any Czech at all) Is there any where else that may be easier to understand for english speaking modelers?

Marco,

The town is gowing nicely. Assuming that the church choirs will face east, are those braces on the top of the new south wall the wood? and did you stain them?

Hello, thanks for the compliments. Unfortunately I can not understand what you mean for the church ... My English school is very poor. Sorry

Marco,

The rounded end of churches usually face the east. I was using this to reference north south east and west. That would place the wall you just built on the south side of the town. My question is: Are there wood pieces used as part of this wall? My model requires either wood or making lots of 'extra' paper pieces that are not on the printed plate.

George

OK. The beams are not made of paper, you have to make them from wood! Only the size is provided. Fortunately I can use matchesticks! I made a drawing on paper to get a better guideline for the knife.

Marco,

I'm sure you don't need any new ideas after all the fine work you've put into the town .... but.

I made one of the towns a few years ago and found street lights and flags among the parts. I therefore needed a way of "suspending" them. For the flag pole I needed something that had a "top". One of my daughters favourite shops is a bead shop and I saw the perfect thing. The shop had small silver items that looked like long pins - they are used to make ear rings.

I bought a handfull and painted some brown to use as flag poles and some green to us for the street lamps. I wrapped the flags round the poles and while the paper was still damp, I bent them so they looked like flags on a quite day.

However - your town still looks great without dozens of flags ;-)

Cheers
Mike
