The Konradus Forum (www.konradus.com/forum/list.php?f=1 (http://www.konradus.com/forum/list.php?f=1)) offers a 1/33 scale Rolls Royce Merlin Engine for Halinski's Spitfire Mk.V. You can download it here: zSHARE - merlin.pdf (http://www.zshare.net/download/514063141e3e17/)

I'm building it as a stand-alone display in 1:16.5 scale for the EAA Museum's Paper Models Exhibit. I printed the parts at 200%. Even at that scale, the detail is impressive. I can't really imagine building this in 1/33!

A weekend and a few nights' work produced the engine mount, firewall, and stand. I used Evergreen plastic rod for the main tubes on the mount and copper wire for the lines. I mixed my green paint (for the plastic and wire) a little at a time to get a varied and worn look. The back of the firewall (only the front is supplied in the kit) is a copy of the front, Photoshopped to remove most of the detail.

I'm very impressed with this kit! I need to finish the engine by July 11--the next IPMS meet in Milwaukee.

For anyone else who wants to built this as a stand-alone, I'll upload a copy of the placard after I correct my spelling ("supercharted"? Good grief!).

Now, If I wanted to be really crazy, I could enlarge the Halinski Spit cockpit to 1:16.5 and add that to the back of the firewall.

I'm not sure I'm that crazy. But it's possible. Hmmm.

No worries,
--David

I think you did the sane thing to build it in 1:16,5 (even saner would have been another measly 6 percent to get to the proper museum scale of 1:16). Building the rest of the Spit in 1:16 is pretty sane too. I hope to be able to be able to make it before my modeling days are over. Much easier than 1:33, that's for sure.

What you've built is Alin Osarik's magnificent Merlin 45 (see this thread (http://www.papermodelers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=725)). He has produced a similar engine for the Me 109, and one Walter rocket engine for the Me 163. Do Alin the honour of visiting his own website at http://www.amod.estranky.cz/

Alin has promised to do a Merlin for the Spitfire Mk IX, too. It should have been out by now, but I suppose it is a little bit overdue. No wonder, they are marvels.

I'm glad to see your build, and that you chose an (almost) sane scale.

WOW! Exxxxxcelent! I hope you notify those IPMS'rs that this model came from a paper model site, and it was free ;)
I am thrilled to see this one!
Cheers!

Yeah, baby. With the DB601 already available (for a miniscule cost) we have the two significant engines of the WWET air war available. Just awesome. I'll be building this sucker at 1:33. I have a backup copy of my Hal Spit gathering dust anyway. It really is a shame that paper cannot keep up with ::brand X::. ;)

Wow - it's looking beautiful already David, can't wait to see the next series of pictures. I've got the kit, and looking at it again, I might attempt it in 1:8 as 1:16 looks pretty daunting and 1:33 looks frustrating beyond belief.

I'm building Nobi's Spitfire IX (w/Leif's enhancements) now. I'll bet a guy could re-scale this Merlin 45, leave (a lot) of the detail bits off, and exclude parts C1 and C2 to get a rough approximation of the Merlin 60-series (probably the 61?) that would have been in the IXc. LOL - I sounds like someone who has actually finished a model, any model, that he's started in the last 12 months.

Great job on this one, I'll watch this thread closely!

I have 3x5 file cards that I hand out, printed with "The Advantages of Paper Modeling":
Low Cost
Simple Tools and Techniques
No Paints or Decals Required
Variety of Subjects
Large Scales
The Glue Tastes Better
I'm trying to win a few p*****c modelers over to the Dark Side. Failing that, it's fun to show up with a detailed free model and rub their noses in it.
("You paid 35 bucks for that 1/72 Spitfire? Geez! Mine's 1/33 and only cost me 17 cents in ink and paper.")

No worries,

Leif,
If I do another one, or another of Alin's engines, I'll go to 1:16. I wasn't thinking about museum scale, just easy scaling. With the detail on Alin's artwork, I could go even larger but this worked out well.

Thanks for the link to Alin's site and for his name. I want to give him credit on the back of the placard. And I've downloaded his other two engines. His work really is exceptional. The artwork and the fit of the Merlin so far are outstanding. And his instructional drawings are very good.

What are you waiting for? You have my permission.

That would build up to a very impressive display.

With all the linkages in place too?

Then I will be impressed

That looks great! Makes mine look rather amatuerish, but Billy had been egging us on to build one of these two for some time and I took the bait, in 1/33 with the spit, and although I didn't put the time/effort, I could still see that it was a very fine model. The problem with putting it in the spit is that the forward formers loose all support, so nothing to hold the skin in place. One way to get over that is to build the formers, then shape the forward skin peices in areas you would like skinned, using the formers as a mold, but not placing the formers in the model.

Or use the reverse of the formers (ie. the former shaped hole<G>) to shape it and then add a card doubler strip around the edges. The two layers should hold it's shape and be reasonably prototypical.

Taking that one step further (and harder) would be outer and inner skins of bond paper with the card edge doublers. All of the layers would really keep it's shape.

Hello Leif,

I have tried to download the engine, both from the direct link and via the CZ one, but it doesn't work. Do you have an other place where it is downloadable? Would like to build it in the Vb I will be starting around X-mas.

Thanks,

EJ

I've got it - send me a PM with an e-mail address that will accept large attachments and I'll send it.

The original .pdf is over 10 Mb I can break it into smaller files for e-mailing.

Charlie

EJ, Dustin - if you are registered at Kartonbau.de, you can download it from their downloads section, also Alin's other engine models:

Kartonbau.de - Alles rund um's Kartonmodell... | kartonbau.de - Download-Archiv (http://www.kartonbau.de/wbb2/filebase.php?sid=f86650b5851d0e8e2f2128dc38573ec0)

or, more specifically, the Merlin 45:

ZShare was pretty good but a couple of weeks ago I found i was no longer able to download anything, it just keeps going in circles. I have adblock features disabled, since I don't use Internet Explorer, I don't know if it is a Firefox issue or something else.

I just joined Kartonbau.de, there is a lot of interesting stuff there and enough of it is in English, thank God, as my German would surely insult someone. Easy and quick process.

It does the exact same thing to me as well. I'd tried downloading a software patch from there and it went through the loop constantly. =(

The second link in Lief's post works, but you have to register for kartonbau.de first. kartonbau.de - Kartonmodellbau, Kartonmodelle, Cardmodels, Cardmodeling (http://www.kartonbau.de) is the main site.

I recently acquired a scrap Airfix Hurricane in 1/24 and I am refitting it with paper parts blown up from 1/33 to 1/24. Thanks to Alin Osarik, Leif Ohlsson and Matt77 I'm able to refit this very badly finished model with paper Browning wing guns and a paper Merlin, blown up from 1/33 scale. Many thanks guys!!
