Ok Armor Heads, the gauntlet was thrown down by somebody in Georgia and it seems everyone jumped at the chance to get into the rhubarb. Below is a capture from BBC footage.

Looks like a T-80 to me - not sure which model though.

So, I just saw that exact footage, wondered the exact same thing, and thought exactly what Charlie said.

I get the feeling after watching the following video that double A fueler drag racing would be a smash hit in Russia...,

It is a T-72
Notice that the IR spotlight is on the back side of the commanders cupula.
Also, notice the narrow type range finder window.

My guess was a Corsair, but I think I'm off...

We RCAF/CAF types never worried about the names of what were naught but targets...

Even as targets, it's only being polite to know 'ours' from 'theirs'

So true. Allies usually don't appreciate so called 'friendly fire' casualties.

I imagine IFF would be really unpleasant in this scrum.
Both sides using equipment made in the same factories and all. Altho' the main light truck of the Georgian army appears to be a Toyota.

True...Pongos do tend to get rather annoyed when assorted ironmongory starts raining down on them...

Actually it's a T-72S which can be identified by it's reactive armor layout. A T-80U has a different front and profile view from the standard T-80.

Man, things could really get confusing if Ukrane decides to join the party.

Anyone notice that the Russian Army is deploying T-55s in Georgia. Even the Australian army hasn't got tanks that old.

Are you sure they're Russian and not Georgian? At least once source I read had the Georgians with approx 250 T-72 and an equal number of T-55's.

OTOH if the Russians were using T-55s it would indicate a use of reserve troops that were handy rather than a long held plan to invade

It was an image in "The Australian" - the caption said it was Russian soldiers talking to civilians at one of the entrances to Gori.

I can scan it if there is interest.

One scene in this video caught my attention - driving a nail in with the tank without snapping the pole. It's suposed to show tank driving skills. When i was a kid, there was a polish TV series, called "Czetrej pancerni i pies" (Four tankers and a dog) about polish-russian-georgian crew of the T-34 in WWII. At the beginning of the series georgian tank driver did the same trick to show how good he is. I'm not sure, where from Janusz Przymanowski (writer of the novels on which the series was based) came with this idea, but the series was a cult back in USSR and i'm pretty sure somebody in russian armored forces copied this. Nowadays russians and georgians drive in separate tanks, though...

Here's the image from the Australian - 18 Aug. Not a great scan but it's about the best I can do.

Speaking of tricks with tanks - the qualification for Finnish gunners in Stug IIIs was to sign their name with a pencil attached to the end of the barrel.

Good grief. Do people still read newspapers? How quaint.
:D

I'll settle for them being slightly less old T62s. Still remarkable though, thanks for mentioning it.

Not by choice - my partner got one of those $20 for 9 months deals on Rupert Murdoch's organ - I guess she just couldn't resist a bargain.

I really must learn something about armour post-WW2 - I saw the 100mm gun and immediately thought T-55.

Charlie
