for all you miniature Head people...

LOL seriously...
A Collection of Miniature Helmets/Headgear from some of my favorite Characters and Films.

This idea was in my head for a couple of years now,
but the project actually started a couple of weeks ago

...with a request from a new Member for a Commando Cody Helmet paper model.

I saw the request and thought "thats a pretty basic shape...I can do that"
and so I created a quick model.

Obviously its not perfect, hey its paper!
...and I am leaving it up to the builder to upsize it if they want it "life size".
But I have since revisited the design and made a few changes:

1. The model is smaller...fits on one sheet now, and sits on the shelf easier!
(I'm still hoping to come up with a stand design)
2. Updated the "metal" finish with some new texture.
3. Cleaned up the mouth "grill" insert.

Anyway, here is the new Commando Cody Helmet!
This is Issue #1 in my Helmet Collection.

Helmet itself is about 3.5 inches tall

COMING UP...
The Rocketeer soars into view!

Issue #2 in the Helmet Collection
is The Rocketeer's Helmet (The Rocketeer by Dave Stevens)

This was a desire I had for two years now, to create a miniature desktop model
from one of my favorite films and Artists (the late Dave Stevens).
I know its not a perfect design, but the texturing helps make it work (I think).
I'm not sure if there are any other Rocketeer Helmet models out there?

The helmet also has the leather chin straps, but I photographed my model before I installed them.
Finished model is about 3-3.5" tall.
A one sheet PDF.
...and its a free download at my site.

I have a few more ideas.

(with all nice intent, please don't inundate me with a bunch of helmet requests! lol)

Dear Dave:
I built the first Version of the Comando Cody Helmet hoped it would fit the cats head for Holloween. Note two small. When I get $3.00 Free to take file to Office max to print on 11x17 card I think this will fit the cat. hope to take pictures. By the way I like the MediaFire down load serivce better than your older one.
Thanks So Much,
MILES

Those are really nice. I like the whole miniature helmet/mask thing, although I've never built any. I have quite a few of them in my collection of unbuilt models. Your's look great. I will respect your wishes and not make any suggestions or requests (until you ask, and then it's tsunami time)!

nice to see the forums getting a little more activity again...
134 unread posts for me today (so far)
lol I can't keep up with them all and make my own posts!
I may not be leaving comments, but I am busy reading some great stuff!

....

new helmet for the collection?

no

I spent the last four or five days working on a Gort head,
only to throw it away in the end!

I really wanted to add the big guy to my collection,
The Day The Earth Stood Still is on my top ten SciFi films list.

Anyway, I was just not happy with the doned helmet top...
Gort is a very smooth, seamless finish, with a very rounded head.
(They used a Football helmet for the lid I believe)

So, until I can figure out a better, smoother lid, Gort is on indefinite hold.

Oh well...back to Ironman

Great idea Dave, I'm sure these will prove popular.

GORT revisited!

haha
as I mentioned earlier, I built up a GORT design and it just didn't work.

Biggest issue was getting a nice domed helmet shape without those awkward and ugly seams.
I don't see how it can be done in paper.

But I did come across an Internet (free) model of Boba Fetts Helmet (Star Wars).
First thing I noticed was a nicely shaped domed helmet.
Turned out to be your standard petal style assembly, but the design was clean
and I saw potential for my application.

I copied the basics of the pattern, removed all the glue tabs, refined the petal shapes
(they appeared to be handdrawn and not mirrored correctly)
added some new joiners strips and recoloured everything.

Adapting the other parts from my earlier design was easy enough and the end result
is probably as good as it gets in paper.
Theres no way to completely hide the seams when the model is mainly one colour
but with careful attention you could do a much better build than me!

So, I give you Issue #3 in the Helmet Collection,
GORT from The Day The Earth Stood Still.

*would have been nice if I had glued the visor in a little straighter!

Nicely done. The Gort model I found does not use petals, but circles, not sure what that is called. When you slap the last circle on top, it looks like a fat flower pot.

This is much, much better. Thanks
