Nina and Pinta

Yesterday we went down to the riverfront in downtown Memphis to see the full-size replicas of the Nina and the Pinta. It was fascinating. I can't imagine sailing the open seas in one of those dinky little ships. I got seasick when a riverboat went by and it's wake made the Nina bob up and down ever so slightly. Of course, the experience left me wanting to build a model of one or the other...or both. :)

In Barcelona, they used to have a replica of one of the ships. Maybe they still do. I kept thinking that I wouldn't feel safe on the Lake of the Ozarks in it, much less the Atlantic.

But I think that is modern thinking again. The vessels were probably considered almost state-of-the-art at the time or at least adequate. The crew must have considered it as acceptable, anyway. Their skillset with these ships is different than ours.

But still ...
