Here is a snag boat or raft. The picture is dated 1861. I am guessing that this had no engine, for the crane or for movement, as I see no stack. Just a vent in the back ground for a stove. Everything seems like muscle power. The barge is 20 feet in beam and 60 in length. I have a lot more details to add and deck clutter. I think this is a great addition to any river fleet. I am unsure what scale it will end up in.

The scale will be 1/250 and has a full hull option as well as my usual waterline. Looks like a one page model.

Looks like a worthy addition to your other models

Ideal for a diorama

Corey, this is a great addition to the river fleet. Snags were and are navigational hazards on rivers. I look forward to this one.

A very interesting craft. I wonder if snag barges like this were used during Grant's Yazoo Pass and Steele's Bayou expeditions during the long Vicksburg Campaign.

I am digging up info on the larger powered snag boats too. Although many were purpose built with the cranes geared to the engine, many stable boats were pressed into snag boat service with cranes being added to the bow and stern. Most of the detailed info with drawings is too late, from the 1880s to about 1930. The info I got on the earlier boats require too much guess work on my part at this time. That is why I was glad to stumble across this barge. Fits with the period and looks interesting.

Any expedition on any of the rivers would have had some form of snag puller along for the ride. Barges like this would have been quite handy.

I went a head and did one in 1/72 scale with house interior as well. The 1/250 scale is ne page the 1/72 scale is three pages.

And this sort of workboat could have been used on rivers other than the Mississipi, too. there was, for instance, quite a bit of steamboat traffic on both the Sacramento and the San Joauquin rivers up untill the 30's.

There are several old paintings and photos of the Missouri River that have this general type of boat in the background. If there had been one of these around, the Arabia might not have gone down. Of course, then a major tourist destination in KC wouldn't exist. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arabia_(steamboat) or Steamboat Arabia Museum (http://www.1856.com/) .

Here it is. I am about done with both the 1/72 and 1/250 scale models. Any one want to build one?

Rather than whether I want to build it, or if there is time to build it is the real question.

Three pages shouldn't be too bad. Hmmm

The 1/250 scale is up in the free downloads. The 1/72 scale with detailed interior will be available at ecards soon (I hope).

What a wonderful and very interesting addition to your subtstantial fleet of ship models, CT!

Always love seeing what you are up to. Your Noah's Ark is really a great little model.

I don't yet see this one listed in the downloads, but from the prior posts it looks like a brilliant little design...very nicely done, once again!:)

Cheers!

I downloaded it so that I could see what it looks like. It's a fine model and, with the very small parts of the crane, challenging in 1/250. I hope to give it a try.

I agree, REALLY neat little vessel!

The crane details will be interesting to attempt at this scale, if not at 1/600....;)

Cheers!

CT,
Where did you find the first entry pic? I've been going nuts trying to find other shots and all I can seem to get are steam-powered stump pickers>
Thanks,
Lep

It's the only picture I got of a barge type. It just says 1861 on it. It came up in a Google search for snag boats. I had to do some guess work on it.

Well, I think the model is great. But, you know me, I'm going add all kinds of greebles and nurnies to it when I build it. Probably in 1/72, as I have no 1/250 figures.
