No, Adobe Reader will only read PDFs it will not write. You will need a PDF writer. One way to make PDFs is to get a "PDF printer" application, such as CutePDF Writer (free at CutePDF - The free PDF Converter, Convert to PDF for free, Free PDF Utilities. (http://www.cutepdf.com/products/CutePDF/writer.asp)). You can then open your PNG or any other file, hit Print, and choose CutePDF as the printer. It then prints to a PDF file you then save to your system.

Edit: I just re-read your post, and it could be interpreted as wanting to ADD a PNG image into an existing PDF. To do this you will need a PDF editor utility, Acrobat Professional is one, but obviously not free. CutePDF also has a Professional version that will do this function, but also not free.

Doing a Google search I see a few promising entries:

http://download.cnet.com/PDFill-PDF-Editor/3000-6675_4-10295757.html - free PDF Editor - I've used some of their tools before and they work well.
http://www.pdfescape.com/ - an online PDF editor - no downloading needed - pretty cool.

It also looks like Foxit PDF Reader (My PDF reader of choice) now has annotating capabilities including inserting images. http://www.foxitsoftware.com/Secure_PDF_Reader/capabilities.php

Hope that helps

Get a virtual printer like CutePDF Writer
CutePDF - Convert to PDF for free, Free PDF Utilities, Save PDF Forms, Edit PDF easily. (http://www.cutepdf.com/)
and install it. Print the png but choose CutePDF Writer as the printer. It will save the png as a pdf.

To insert it into an existing pdf use something like PDFTK Builder
PDFTK Builder and other PDF Resources (http://www.angusj.com/pdftkb/)
You can use PDFTK Builder to make a single pdf out of multiple pdf's, break up a multipage pdf into individual pdf pages, or insert a single pdf page into a multipage pdf.

Those are free programs.

Maybe this helps...

Open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat, click "Tools," select "Advanced Editing" and choose "TouchUp Object Tool."

Right-click the PDF and select "Place Image." The "Open" dialog box appears.

Select "PNG" as the image file type from the "Files of type" drop-down box, select the PNG file you want to insert and click "Open." The copy of the PNG is inserted into the center of the PDF page.
