Hello everyone!

I would like to officially open up a design compeition for the site logo.

The requirements are:
It must have a catchy slogan of some kind along with it - use the one at the top now or come up with your own - no limitations

Enter as often as you wish, all designs will be considered.

This contest will close Midnight GMT September first 2007.

Initial judging to narrow down the field (if needed) will be done by the mods and admins. Final vote will be by poll to all members.

The loot:
I am going to offer two prizes to the winner
Up to 10 dollars worth of digital models from the hobbyfactory (http://www.hobbyfactory.com/)
One large scale or two regular scale aircraft from Dewayne's (http://www.teuton.org/dbarnett/) site

If anyone else offers up prizes I will add them to the list here so check back if you are considering a design!
Thanks,
Chris

Hi Chris!

Just to clarify, what would be the best software/file format to submit the logo entries in?

what size(s) do they need to be? .... (i.e. 360x126, 640x480, 1024x768, etc.)
I noticed our current logo is 360x126 and is a .gif format.

Do you want us to keep the same background? Any color/palette requirements?

This is really exciting! Making logos is fun... just need free-time from the girlfriend to do it :D

cgutzmer

Hey Terry!
since its going on the web jpg or gif would be best. However you can really make it in whatever format you want. Most any format can convert to jpg.

Oh yes, I suppose I should mention that all submittals should be attached to this thread. I think that will be the best way to handle it (and give inspiration to others!)

Sorry - was typing my response while you posted Goney :)

There are no color requirements. This color setup is just a standard default and I heard there is a possiblity of a change in any case. So feel free to use whatever colors you want.

I would like to see the logo be the same size as the one that is there now so 360x128 (or any ratio thats the same)

I dont know if Jason would need any other sizes to go along or not.....
Thanks!
Chris

Hmm.... I can make them on a transparent layers over the current background, so if/when it ever changes I can swap out the backgrounds so it fits with whatever theme is created in the future. Or just give you guys the master files? :)

So is there any themes with this?

So far my brain has been rattling around the title "paper modelers".
I was thinking something like a pepakura image fading to completed model.
Or silhouette images for planes, trains, and automobiles?
The "tools of the trade" also sounded neat... having the cutting mat, scissors, and glue... though would that be considered too cliché?
I might just "keep it simple" and go with a nifty font and maybe an outline of a model or something near it... or somehow incorporate the above themes somehow into the font itself?

Wow, the possibilities are endless! :)

I also take suggestions for those who can't draw but have great ideas :D
I love community thinking so please post them here.

Gharbad

I think you may be right about that phrase.

My 20th anniversary Prime (best TF toy ever!!) has it all over the box with no copyright symbol (or anything else).

"The Transformers" is restricted, and it's right beside it, so it may apply to both, but I'm not a lawyer.

There are many logos in this style NASA (inlc mission patches), Navy, Star Trek etc. . . I have always liked the style it is simple, nice and clean, and the various elements can be used to produce an endless variety of badges/logos :)

What follows is a personal opinion based on years of similar work which lead to many awards in the field of similar work.

What I would like to see is a logo designed to occupy the entire length of width of the page. I realize this might not work on those folks who upload full graphic images which are wider than the average page width inside the forums (I personally feel page width should be stuck on 1024 and no more - bad eyes, getting badder), but it would still work.

Prior to Peter Davis' takeover of CM, the flag on the front page was the full width of the page. It looked good. It had attitude. It said, "Cardmodels.net and we're proud of it." But when it was shrunk to a smaller size for whatever reason, it lost that.

I ain't no expert on web design, but I was a newspaper editor for 15 years and I try to translate what I learned doing that to webpage design. The flags I designed for my papers when I had too, for the most part, were bold and stood out.

When you look designing your logo, maybe look at what is there now and make your design fit in the spot it will fill. It just might give this site even more attitude.

I like the idea of having a half width logo like we do now, but with the other half of the banner being various pictures that get cycled through - perhaps even old POTW pictures.

I second Ash ideas. Attitude is important, and we paper modelers are making a stand in the modelers community.

I appreciate your input. 1024x768 looks good on a 15 - 17" display, on my 20 in wide screen it leaves about 40% of my screen blank and every thing on it distorted. Having a fixed width logo would appear odd to a lot of viewers. The usual practice I use when designing web pages is to put a logo on one side or the other of the header on a shaded background in a frame or cell that is auto scaling. If you look at the present logo you can see what I mean. You can also add info/news in the white space remaing. The other option is to go to a fixed width (1024) and center the page (happy scrolling).

One of course also has to consider other things like white space and what's important - the logo or the content. The general tendency of web designers is to use print media formats in their designs. In my experience the most interesting sites avoid this practice.

Isn't having an opinion great;).

I must have missed this...of course, I haven't been able to spend alot of time here...
A contest I can actually enter! I can be pretty graphic! lol

I just learned about this so give me a few days, but I am interested, let's see what I can come up with...

Paper modelers, you'll be stuck on us!
Paper modelers, Stick it! (bad form?)
Paper modelers, one fold away from a masterpiece!
Paper modelers, can you cut it?
Paper modelers, we don't sniff our glue! lol

...all in about 45 seconds!

Thanx Chris! I really think that whatever logo is chosen, it really would best represent us if it were made out of paper. Yes, graphics are cool, but if you want this logo to " pop", make it from paper...what do you guys think about that?
I have many ideas, but I do not want to steal all the glory.
One of my ideas involves making the "Paper Modelers" words from paper letters (3D of course) and surrounding them with tinies...

What if, for instance, You or Jason were to attend a paper modelers convention and photograph several paper models (from different designers) together to represent the logo?

Whatever the choice, I think the logo itself should be a paper model

goney3
08-03-2007, 10:21 AM
Yeah, I had a subtle thought about that... it would be more of a "coding" issue though. Just have the "Picture Of The Week" as the background for the logo with "Paper Modelers" written in the foreground. I would imagine coding that might make for a nice headache. At least that way it would automatically update and such. But writing the script for that could easily make anyones head hurt.

*runs off to get aspirin*

I did a brain-storming session after work yesterday for about 5 minutes and got a few more "feasible ideas". Part of me wants to make it really detailed and complicated, the other half wants to make it super-simple. I guess I'll make both and see how the community feels about it ;)

"Fiesta" ends this weekend here in town, then my girl wants us to do a pilgrimage to IKEA (she's Swedish). Then I work part-time at a winery. So hopefully in the next few weeks I can get some ink on paper! .... I am really looking forward to Phils creations as well as any more from Paper-Toys and B-Manic (you guys are AWESOME!). :)

Cheers all!

Here are my entries for the contest. I could have came up with a few more, but its midnight here on the west coast and I'm barely awake.
I made these on transparent backgrounds so I can easily change them to fit the current theme, or just give you guys the master files and let you play with them. ;)

I can mix-match, change sizes, colors, quotes, etc.
Just let me know. :)

I am in the process of putting together a page where people can vote (rate) their favorites and least favorites. You will be able to do it anonymously. We dont have nearly as many entries with paper-toys dropping out :( it looks like there is a total of 11 entries. If you want to throw a couple of yours back in paper-toys I wouldnt mind ;)

I will let voting run for one week (close midnight central time on sept 9th) on my gallery then the 4 logos with the highest rating will come here for a final vote. If paper-toys wants to re-enter one or two of his I will allow since he had them posted before.

Please vote - gift certificates are at stake!
Thanks
Chris

Thank you Chris for the extension.

LOL that is my girlfriend's entry :D
She used one similar to that one as her reference image for the painting.

She used ArtRage v2.5 (http://www.ambientdesign.com/artrage.html) to draw that based off her reference photo. :)

edit:// if you Google "Paper model earth" you'll see the thumbnail show up. She was searching for something that would fit her slogan that she came up with. It was hand painted and not intended to be any form of copyright infringement on you Steve. Thank you for being an inspiration for this logo. :)

Hehehe, I just love that fact that if Chris chooses a top 4... at least ONE of mine will be in that list :D

Im sad to hear Paper-Toys wont resubmit a few of his. If not for him wanting to win, I think several of his logos would make a great site design.

*pokes him to reconsider* :)

Any chance on having this link added to a new thread or editing the original post to include it? I have a feeling it might get lost on "page 8" and have fewer votes than normal

I wasn't sure how we were supposed to vote, so I rated the one I liked as a 5

rate as many or few as you like them :) this is not the vote, this is rating individual models really :)
