While I can appreciate the craftsmanship involved, I find the idea of hacking up books quite unpleasant.

At CBLF49 :

You can buy "decorator books" by the foot from some used book stores or interior design places.
These are hard bound late 19th c, and early 20th c books that are so dated, and so awful that no one is every going to read them again. And if you really do want to read them, Google or MS or the guttenberg project or internet archive probably have a scanned copy you can download.
