Today was not a good day I spent 13 hours at the hospital today.

My youngest son Kevin who lives with us has had the flu for the last week. Last night I heard him banging around the house and thought little of it as he is a sleep walker. There were no outward signs of any injury but apparently he fell and suffered a head injury. This morning he was acting groggy as if his flu fever had come back. At 8 AM he fell and could not get back up. I examined him and thought he had had a stroke. By 9:30 he was on the operating table for 3 1/2 hours of surgery. If he survived the surgery they only gave him a 25% chance of recovering completely and could have issues similar to a major stroke. The surgery went well but it is not clear if there will be any permanent issues.

A comment comes to mind that I heard many years ago "A man should never out live his children"

Jim, you have my family's prayers for full recovery for your son. Hang in...miracles do happen. I flashed back to a telephone call that my oldest son was in the hospital in critical condition following being run over by an automobile with crushed pelvis, etc. etc. His doctor told me that if he survived, he likely would never be able to walk normally again. Well, he did recover, and well enough that he was later able to serve a tour in Afghanistan humping the squad heavy weapon over hill and dale.

I am so very sorry to hear this. I and my wife are getting together with our Pastor and his wife for dinner tomorrow, and I will remember you and your son and ask our Pastor to pray for you both too.

There is a verses I like and I will try to remember whenever I am not doing too good and looking for comfort "Matthew 11:28-30 ~ Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me, for I am meek and lowly in heart, and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."

Also, a hymn I love so very much ~ "It Is Well With My Soul". I tried to type the song but I think easier to give you the youtube link and hop you will found comfort in it just as it did for me many times ~ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cPPSG_SpojY&feature=related (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cPPSG_SpojY&feature=related)

To one and all, your payers, thoughts and good wishers are greatly appreciated.

Kevin is being kept sedated but he did respond to questions and did show some control on his left side both of which are good signs. His neurosurgeon told us that when he came into the emergency room he was with in minutes of brain death.

Allan,

"It Is Well with My Soul" is a favorite of mine and considering the story behind the hymn very appropriate.

It is difficult to put my feelings into words about the response to my request. I will just say that it brings tears to my eyes.

They took Kevin off of the respirator today and stopped the "put to sleep" meds. There was more response from his left side but it looks like it is going to be long road to recovery for Kevin. He appears to fully aware of his surroundings and answers questions. When I told him our dog missed him he said "I gotta get home" and wanted to get out of bed.

I so understand your feelings. About three months ago my 32 year old daughter suffered a cerebral haemmorage. She was in hospital and rehab for 10 weeks and was let out on 21st December. (best Xmas present of my life). Unfortunately she is still quite badly disabled physically (not mentally Thank You God) and they reckon she will eventually make a full recovery but it's a slow process and I'm not a very patient sort of person. That makes it difficult to keep up a positive attitude for her, but it is important to do so to help her cope.

I know things look black, but you have to keep reminding yourself that the brain is an amazing machine with the ability to "re-wire" itself, given time, to restore function.

So keep strong, and even if you feel close to despair never let your son see it; he needs your belief in him to encourage him to keep up his fight for recovery.

With my very deepest sympathy,

Brian

Jim,

Your last message brings us all hopeful signs that, in time, your son will get back to normal. We have all seen alot of miracles over the years.

A couple of years ago, one of my neighbor's kids had a bad accident on a dirt bike. Broke his neck and was in a coma for a couple of months, and doctors were not very reassuring. When he finally woke up, he couldn't move anything below the waist. Fast forward: He is finally back home and is walking; albeit slowly. No noticeable brain damage.

My point is: The human body is a very mysterious and robust machine, and over time, it is just amazing the turnaround that can happen. It sounds like things are getting a little better already, and so we all remain vigilent and hopeful for the recovery that will surely happen.

Hang in there - the prayers will continue.

And I too, know the heartbreak of seeing a child, your child, in a situation that

Jim, let me second Dave Friesen's comment. Every forum member who is a human being -- and I think the percentage is quite high -- extends hopes and prayers for your son, for you, and for your family. Circumstances do not permit all of us to make individual posts, but those wishes are there. Not just limited to official members, either -- many of us have mentioned the situation to spouses and other familiy members, and I've no doubt that many of them echo our thoughts and hopes.

Once again thank you and a special thank you to Zathros. Your payers and concerns have not gone in vain. Kevin was transferred to a normal room today, He is fully aware and his memory is intact except for a short time before the accident which is typical for a major injury. His speech has not been affected and we have seen a big improvement in his motor control on his left side.
The neurosurgeons comment was "nothing beats being young and healthy when it comes to recovery". Now it is just a matter of hard work and time. We don't know how close he will come back to his normal self but I am optimistic.

Kaven was released on Wednesday afternoon. To be able to come home he had to be able to feed, dress and shower with little help. That will give you an idea of how far he has progressed. His doctors say that he is several months ahead of what they expected. His speech is slow but there is no slurring of words and he still has only limited control of his left side but that improves daily. Though the "M" word has not been used all of his family thinks that his fast recovery is a small miracle.

I am optimistic that he will for the most part have a full recovery but it will take several months for that to happen.

Again, thank you for all your support, for me your words of encouragement and knowing that you were sharing my concerns were a blessing.

An update on my son Kevin's injury. Motor functions are coming back rapidly and speech is normal and best of all I'm seeing his since of humor returning, he can be quite a clown. However his skull and wound is not healing well. We had to admit him this afternoon for more surgery. They are concerned that the skull is not closing and there appears to be a lot of dead tissue in the wound. All things considered this is not life threatening but it is serious especially if there is any infection.

Again thank you for your prayers, thoughts and concerns.
