Hey folks,

i know, i have been absent for quite a while but i didn't have the time to post a complete report for this diorama. But now that it's finished, i want to share some pics with you.
I started on both models in december 2008 (yeah, ages ago, i know). Since then, i had many breaks and built other models but finally, i got around finishing this.
The models are from HMV (Hamburger Modellbaubogen Verlag) and have been enhanced with the corresponding photo-etched sets.
The pipelines on "Altmark"'s deck were made with brass wire in different sizes.
The rigging was done with Wonder Wire. Corbin (Chaldane) used this for his EGV as well. Great stuff!
I added some figures (1:220) to the diorama to give it a more realistic look.

Both model kits (especially the "Altmark") are really great. There are some minor mistakes in them but nothing serious. Building was fun and i learned a lot during the process.

I hope you enjoy the pics; if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask :)

Kind regards

Lars

A beautiful model, Lars. And it brought back memories of reading Willi Frischauer and Robert Jackson, Navy's Here! The Altmark Affair, about the boarding of the Altmark and recovery of British prisoners by the crew of HMS Cossack in February 1940.

 Holy mackerel. That's a fantastic display and a fantastic build Lars. Even though I know it is paper, looking at those pictures there's still a part of my mind saying "you're sure it's paper?"

Great work, and thanks for sharing those inspiring pictures.

That is just.... juicy with detail. Very nice.

What are you going to do with it? Glass case display in the living room? Donate to a local maritime museum?

@all: Thank you for your nice words. It means a lot to me :)

@David: Right now, i leave it in a glass case display in my living room (see pic). And i don't know, if a museum would be interested at all...

I agree, both models are superbly done, clearly deserving of all the compliments, and would quite easily be a prime exhibit in any maritime museum.

Thank you for treating us all to photos of this masterpiece!

Cheers!

@all: Thank you for your compliments :)
I just wish i had some more spare time, so i could post more about the building processes here... Maybe, in the future...
And concerning a museum display: I plan to show this diorama at the weekend 27.04.-29.04.2012 in Bremerhaven's Schifffahrtsmuseum, Germany.

Lars-
Magnificent work! Thank you. I use paper only where it is best suited in the construction of a wood model. Still, seeing work like yours makes me wonder about wood. I have taken the liberty of saving your page to my reference file. I hope you do not mind and thank you again.

Hello Lars,
this model is a truly magnificent piece of work. Congratulations!!

Just an information: where did you get the wonder wire? Is there any distributor here in Germany?

Cheers,
Tommaso

Great model Lars and big one too. Congratulations on an exquisite build. Somehow I missed this one when you posted it. I still remember (and frequently return to it) your wonderfull harbour diorama too.

@all: Thank you for your kind words, they're much appreciated :)

@Tomasso: There is no distributor in germany (yet), i only know the following adress:

Precision Enterprises
479 Randall Hill RD
Springfield, VT. 0515

Phone 802-885-3094

No email-adress, sadly, you'd have to call there or write a letter. I made a collective purchase with some other friends and the stuff arrived safely here in germany.

Kind regards

Tomasso, you might find it in a fishing equipment store too. Under brand name Caliber (fishing tackles).

Here's one address from where to buy it (I think): Caliber Tackle (http://calibertackle.blogspot.com/)
