Another kit from DrafModel. DrafModel has proven to be one of the best designers. The Pak40 and the LeFh are both something I call a 100% kit.
Everything fits....no need to trim any parts. very few designers can beat this.
So my expectations for this T28 are really high. I will also give a lot of thanks to Rafal for this great model!!

When starting a new model I also have a chance to clear my workshop a bit...
First pic shows the desk at the final stages of the P51...second pic shows present stage!!

So the build starts with a fresh workbench.

The driver's front plate looks like a perfect aiming point - what were they thinking? At least it looks as if the crew had a chance of bailing out of a T-28 - unlike the T-35.

Started on the turret.

The drawing
http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t28/t28-16sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t28/t28-16.jpg)

The assembly of the frames for the main turret went very well.

Next was the top skin that will be covered on the sides with another skin part.
http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t28/t28-19sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t28/t28-19.jpg) http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t28/t28-20sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t28/t28-20.jpg)

Top skin is on, and the flips are bent over the rounded edge and glued.
http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t28/t28-21sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t28/t28-21.jpg)

Next was the side skin....the other part will be glued tomorrow.
http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t28/t28-22sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t28/t28-22.jpg)

All stiffeners for the sideskirts are done.
http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t28/t28-23sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t28/t28-23.jpg)

And in between I'm placing nuts and bolts......

How are you distinguishing between rivets and nuts? The T-28 seems to have been built on the principle of riveting everything that wasn't field removable. My impression from the existing museum vehicles it would be quite a chore to figure out whether a fastening should be a rivet or a bolt/nut. I think the attached image, borrowed from jagdtiger.de shows this on the side of the engine deck.

It seems like the nuts/rivet issue will be decided without knowing exact where to put a rivet or where to put a nut. DrafModel have done a great job placing nuts where I think they belong, but as you said, not all nuts are nuts....some are rivets . That makes nuts rivets and rivets nuts and I'm soon going nuts over rivets or was it nuts over nuts.....rivets...nuts....nuts....rivets....

After a couple of trips through the depot for repainting, repainting and repainting, they're neither rivets nor nuts, just bumps

Given the reliability of the 1930s tanks the removable bits would get quite a workout. I notice the T-28 at the Red Army Museum has many of the nuts painted red - don't know why - but it would give some sort of a guide. (that's the T-28 on the jadgtiger.de site). A lot of the T-28s were remanufactured, sometimes a number of times, during the Winter War with Finland - the Kirov factory wasn't far from the front line.

Front turret machinegun port.

Drawing
http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t28/t28-31sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t28/t28-31.jpg)

When I looked at the drawing the port first looked a bit tricky to make.
It's half way sunked into the turret.

I cut out the parts and glued the 3 pieces together.
http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t28/t28-32sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t28/t28-32.jpg) http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t28/t28-34sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t28/t28-34.jpg)

I also had to cut a hole in the turret to have the port fit in.
http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t28/t28-33sm.jpg (http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t28/t28-33.jpg)

And when I put the piece in....of course it fitted :) hey! it's a Draf Model!!

Very nice progress Johnny
The exhaust looks great. I like the additional weathering that you are adding to this model. Are you using rust colored pastel chalk for the rust effect? It looks very good.
Also, another question, did the nuts and bolts that you have attached onto part A of the transmission cover supplied with the kit or is that an aftermarket laser cut addition? I really like the look of the bolt coming through the center of the nut. I look forward to seeing more

Hi Kevin!

I use the weathering sets from Tamiya for the weathering. I used orange rust, soot and mud weathering on the exhaust
Nuts are 1,2mm from DrafModel i bought some years ago :)
And i admit they are very nice :)

Great tip on weathering material as used. I do have a few questions, I was just amazed @ how clean you cut out the Sprocket teeth.......what type knife are you using, do you use any mag equipment and I went back and looked thru the thread again and noticed you have a syrienge, do you use this for gluing and what type glue and needle size?
Impressive workmanship.

Wheels...This front wheel should be more picky than i thought...built up of thin paper with not much strength. So it was very hard to get the wheel straight and in line with itselves.

The drawing shows some of the complexity of the wheel
http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t28/t28-81sm.jpg ('http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t28/t28-81.jpg')

All made of the thin paper
http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t28/t28-82sm.jpg ('http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t28/t28-82.jpg') http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t28/t28-83sm.jpg ('http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t28/t28-83.jpg')

And then it was all those small 0,3mm rods to be used..
http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t28/t28-84sm.jpg ('http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t28/t28-84.jpg')

I drilled small holes in all the way around and put the rods inside
http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t28/t28-85sm.jpg ('http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t28/t28-85.jpg') http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t28/t28-86sm.jpg ('http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t28/t28-86.jpg')

And so i used 5mm rods for spacing and maintaining the same distance all way around
http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t28/t28-87sm.jpg ('http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t28/t28-87.jpg') http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t28/t28-88sm.jpg ('http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t28/t28-88.jpg')

http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t28/t28-89sm.jpg ('http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t28/t28-89.jpg') http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t28/t28-90sm.jpg ('http://www.papirmodeller.com/workshop/t28/t28-90.jpg')

Also started to make some tracks...

The level of detail on those front wheels is really incredible, and a testament to your patience and skill. The tracks look like the real thing. Beautiful work.

6 years, that's commitment ;)
Glad you're continuing this model, it's awesome, definitively on my must buy list !

For the little story I decided to jump into paper modelling around a couple of years ago and buy my first kits after following your build thread !

Sometimes things get in the way in front of things in your life...that happened to me too....I hit the wall pretty hard.Im sure that several of you that i concider as my modelbuilder friends was wondering why I suddenly disappeared...Several things happened. I found out I could not stay in my old job..I was beginning to feel "sick" of it, so I quitted and got a new job and a fresh start. In this process there was not room for my hobbies....I had enough with myselves in that period. Thigs got better, I got my old spirit back, new job offshore that i love and i feel that life is smiling at me again. And im building models again :)

Glad I could inspire you dje :)
