Hi friends,

Here is a small diorama I made last year depicting a portion of the Parallelhafen in the Duisburg region around 1931. It incorporates several small vessels, a quay and a coal tipper.

Here are a few reference photo's and the kits.

Kind Regards,

Cris

The first of the small vessels, a customs whaler:

The framework and hull for the Binnenschiff, a common type of cargo ship still seen in great use even today. I have modified the framework to show an open hold taking on coal from the tipper.

Hello Friends,

The next last small vessel is quite interesting. The WELLE (Wave) by HMV is still afloat after nearly 75 years. Here are a few pictures of her and a start on the framework.

Cris

Finishing up the hull and adding deck details. A small teaspoon comes in handy for forming the hull. A needle is useful when forming small diameter cylinders like the ventilators shown.

Hi Friends,

Continuing with the coal tipper which is entirely from scratch.

@Art Deco: Thanks for your kind comments, 1:250 is my favorite scale.

And completing the tipper with a short segment of rail bridge and the operator cabin and coal chute winches. The long masts are signaling devices as the rail wagons were returned by gravity to the turntable and rail yard below and behind the tipper:

Fantastic diorama! Skillful construction and scratchbuilding work, the detail is wonderful. Very realistic graphics, colors and finishes, including that great canal water. The black & white photographic background is a nice touch to give the scene overall context.

Bravo!

Hello Joe,

Thanks for the kind words. The figures just like the ones I used in my http://www.papermodelers.com/forum/diorama/21646-hamburger-hafen-diorama-hmv-1-250-a.html Hamburg diorama are Z scale 1:220 figues from Preiser. About 16 Euros for 100 unpainted.

If you read back though the original thread on Kartonbau, I give some tips on painting them as well.

Also, depending on how motivated you are, Pleiner offers 1:250 lasercut figures that are assembled out of several layers. And, if you can lay your hands on it the original Micromodels companion book illustrates how to make figures out of matchsticks.

Good Luck and Regards,

Cris
