While I wait for Little Willie to hit the shop, and plan my next big adventure...
I have been working on a few side projects.

One of those projects has rekindled some interest in some old Race Cars
and that has sparked the desire to try my hand at some new Car models!

But, not miniature Koolwheelz models.
These will be 1/24 scale kits.

...
I was recently contacted by a fellow who has been restoring a vintage Race car.
A one of a kind BMW 2002 Alpina Sports car from 1974.

http://i1125.photobucket.com/albums/l588/cutandfold/PaperAutos/AlpinAGr2_2002_Ring-5.jpg

He commissioned me to do the car in paper, and as far as I know
he plans to sell the model on his own site.
Apparently he has a site detailing the restoration work over the last ten years.
When I get the info, I'll tell you more.

http://i1125.photobucket.com/albums/l588/cutandfold/PaperAutos/2002covermockup.jpg

But as part of our arrangement, I have retained control of the basic design
and I will be producing an alternate version (alternate paint scheme)
of this car ...in the near future.

I already have an interest in a couple of versions of this BMW,
but I also have an interest in a few other Vintage Road and Rally Sports Cars
that I would like to do in paper.

...
For now, heres a couple of photos of the finished commission...

Excellent! Commissions are a good thing. As part of the agreement are you prohibited from doing a build thread?

The BMW 2002 was a very common choice back then, excellent subject for a multi-version project and nice job on this one.;) What are the other models you have in mind?

Well, I used to own an Audi GT Coupe...
and I love some of the Road Race versions
as well as the rally and Hill Climb cars.

The Prospeed S1 Audi is built from the exact car I owned.
So, that will be the next model after the BMW 2002.

IGnTaNscjGY

But obviously, a lot of the 70s stuff, with all the ground effects packages
and Turbocharged engines. There are a number of CanAm cars that I was
impressed with before they were outlawed.

Love the bimmer. Would to love to see someone to cars from the transfer am series.

airdave

Do you mean Trans Am series?

Trans Am started back in the sixties...so that covers a lot of cars
and a lot of race eras.

Cami

Trans Am series sounds good, especially the late sixties-early seventies Camaro, Mustang and Challenger.;)

I have no idea what a Volvo Amazon is!
LOL
but it sounds a lot more interesting than another Camaro, Mustang or Challenger!
I really love the unique and interesting.

Dave,
Love the BMW!! I would love to build it if you do release a version... Once I get some time and some more design skill, I plan to design/build a BMW E30 M3 like this one.http://www.google.com/url?source=imglanding&ct=img&q=http://tuningcars.us/albums/userpics/10001/bmw-e30-tuning_283529.jpg&sa=X&ei=hdmGUJVxwsepAe-4gegO&ved=0CAsQ8wc4JQ&usg=AFQjCNGZaqmgnJ-NWbm4t-162n_cAy9hlA
at one point someone had a paper model of an E30 but I cant seem to find it anywhere...
anyway, keep up the great work!

Heres a recap of the story and an update on where I am with this project:

A few months back I was contacted by a fellow named Mark
about doing a paper model of a rare BMW Race Car.

The car in question is the 1974/75 BMW Alpina 2002
I've attached a couple of montage pics showing the 74 white version
and the 1975 black version with the more common Alpina striping package.

http://i1125.photobucket.com/albums/l588/cutandfold/Race%20Cars/th_74bmw2002montage.jpg (http://i1125.photobucket.com/albums/l588/cutandfold/Race%20Cars/74bmw2002montage.jpg) http://i1125.photobucket.com/albums/l588/cutandfold/Race%20Cars/th_75bmw2002montage.jpg (http://i1125.photobucket.com/albums/l588/cutandfold/Race%20Cars/75bmw2002montage.jpg)

So, its seems Mike owns this car and is in the process of restoring it
to its former glory. He has a website dedicated to this Car and the project.
And he got the idea to create a paper model of the car and sell it on his
site, to his fans. Thats where he contacted me.

Initially the request was for the white BMW (Alpina sponsored) 1974 version,
and that was the original model I created for him.

http://i1125.photobucket.com/albums/l588/cutandfold/Race%20Cars/PB117854.jpg
http://i1125.photobucket.com/albums/l588/cutandfold/Race%20Cars/th_PA137781_797x600.jpg (http://i1125.photobucket.com/albums/l588/cutandfold/Race%20Cars/PA137781_797x600.jpg) http://i1125.photobucket.com/albums/l588/cutandfold/Race%20Cars/th_PA137778_800x600.jpg (http://i1125.photobucket.com/albums/l588/cutandfold/Race%20Cars/PA137778_800x600.jpg) http://i1125.photobucket.com/albums/l588/cutandfold/Race%20Cars/th_PA137773_797x600.jpg (http://i1125.photobucket.com/albums/l588/cutandfold/Race%20Cars/PA137773_797x600.jpg)

But after we discussed producing a second version, he has since decided
he will be restoring the car to the distinctive black Alpina paint scheme.
And he asked if I could also produce that version...which I have.

http://i1125.photobucket.com/albums/l588/cutandfold/Race%20Cars/BMWAlpina21800.jpg

In one of the reference photos I received, a Print Ad by Alpina showed the '75 car
parked with another Race Car...the '75 3.0CSL
Its a very similar styled race car, and so I decided to make a few alterations and
create a third version from my template.

http://i1125.photobucket.com/albums/l588/cutandfold/Race%20Cars/th_PC137999-800.jpg (http://i1125.photobucket.com/albums/l588/cutandfold/Race%20Cars/PC137999-800.jpg) http://i1125.photobucket.com/albums/l588/cutandfold/Race%20Cars/th_BMWAlpina7800-01.jpg (http://i1125.photobucket.com/albums/l588/cutandfold/Race%20Cars/BMWAlpina7800-01.jpg)

I have discussed the arrangement with my customer Mike.
Hes not ready to release the models on his site yet.
And I will be making up special covers and packages for him to distribute to his fans and colleagues.
I have given him all three models (if he wants them) to sell as he pleases.

In return we have agreed that I will be adding these models to my shop
and so I will be doing that shortly.

There will be three 1/24 scale kits available (as I have discussed here)
...but hopefully this is the start of a larger collection of Race Car models.

Lots of other projects keeping me busy, but every now and then
I put in a little work on the next Race Car model...the Audi S1

I'm a big Audi fan
I owned a GT Coupe back in the late 80s.
(The GT Coupe is the basic car underneath the S1
...although the S1 is based on the Quattro, 4 wheel drive version)

Anyway, I have started work on the basic template...sorting out all the shapes
and dimensions...and then I can start building a substructure in paper.

http://i1125.photobucket.com/albums/l588/cutandfold/Race%20Cars/auditemplate.jpg

...........
Funny thing, I just came across this interesting little video story
about a guy who does amazing things with Slot Car tracks.
And theres a related them here.
Check it out.

Are you doing the short wheel base or the long wheel base?

airdave
01-20-2013, 05:27 PM
Well, I'm no expert, but the S1 Group B car
run in '84 was based on a shortened Quattro.

I'm not aware that the second gen of the Quattro Sport was any longer,
since Audi did produce and sell a limited number of
factory Quattro Sports in '86...these were shortened Quattros.

My GT Coupe (1985) was 5" longer than the S1
as were the first Quattro Rally cars.

I wonder...if the S1 sent over for the Pike's Peak runs was a longer
wheelbase version?

To be honest, I am using photos of the original S1 and the new Prospeed reproduction car.
I couldn't tell you which is which or whether either is a v.1 or v.2! lol
And I don't think my model will be that super accurate.

the S1 that went up Pikes Peak, was a shortwheel base

the S1 that Volker has up is a long wheel base, as is the one from ymjr

the S1 that Volker has up is a long wheel base, as is the one from ymjr

what does this mean?
who are volker and ymjr?
are there already models of this car?

see, my knowledge is pretty limited here as far as the history is concerned.
hey, that guy Gumpert...I think I know him?

I assume you are talking about volker gerht?
but who is ymjr?

airdave
01-20-2013, 06:12 PM
I think you might be referring to reproduction S1s.
I believe the Gehrt S1 is the Prospeed car.
http://www.unfallservice-gehrt.de/de/audi-quattro-s1/audi-quattro-s1/audi-quattro-s1-gruppe-b.html

The repro cars are built on Quattro chassis' so they are long wheel base.

well I didn't know about those.

the racepaper models are pretty basic,
I don't care about those.

but the ymjr model is quite nice.
...and its 1/24 scale (which is what mine would be)

I guess theres not much point in wasting time on something
thats already out there.

That completes the set of three BMW Group 2 cars.

And that will be it for the cars right now...
I want to get a few planes out of the way and focus on my Tank project.

I'll probably revisit some Race Car ideas in the future.
Thanks for your interest in this...the cars are always fun projects.
