Hi All.

I'm currently working on a design which has a number of coil springs visible.

Has any one got any suggestions for the best way to model these in paper?

Thanks JTF.

depends on size one suggestion is to design a basic cylinder. the most basic is a cylinder with printed coils on it. you can get fancy and have the cylinder a dark color then wrap a contrasting very thin strip around it to represent a more 3d representation.

Most kits i've seen use a tube with spring printed on the outside.

Either that or the builder has to make one out of wire.

As cmdrted said - basic dark cylinder and instructions to wrap it with thin solder.

You could wrap a thin strip of paper in a spiral around a small diameter dowel.

When you remove the sprial of paper it would look like a coiled spring.
1/4" strip

1/16" strip

Thanks for the input guys.

How about flat circles cut at the 12 O'clock position. Then stick the 12 to 1 O'clock position to the 11 to 12 of the next circle. Several circles should produce a nice spiral.

Round section or rectangular section? Rectangular onses could be built up from laminated rings that are split on one side. The next lamination goes 90° or 180° around the helix. Just an idea

I modelled this spring in Rhino. It will unfold as well.

Cheers JTF

Some things just can not be done in paper as an example canopies for obvious reasons. My goal is to build the most accurate model as I can and it if that requires a material other than paper then I use that material.
As a paper modeler for over 50 years I do not understand the need to have model completely made from paper.
As for springs, I use black annelid iron wire and wrap it around a machine screw the result is a realistic spring. You can find annealed iron wire at most hardware stores, but not the big box stores. Ace often will have it is several sizes.
