I build after Alder's Gate yesterday MTB 102 by Micromodels. It is very easy model with only six parts and no small part.

Of course it is not as easy at it appear...

The boat is not the same size as the area for the boat on the display base. So I fill in area with blue and white color pencil to match ink work. It is not my mistake as area for boat is wider even than the deck of the boat, which is widest part of model.

http://i417.photobucket.com/albums/pp256/Carla_Lashelle/004-1.jpg

The front deck I glued with Impact Cement ( I know I ruine last boat with Imapct Cement) but here it made good for compound curves. I make holes for small posts with Awl tool, but with bad eyesight I miss all the marks! I have bad eye and could not see well yesterday even with glasses.

http://i417.photobucket.com/albums/pp256/Carla_Lashelle/005-2.jpg

I cut this out ok but made it rough on the side becuase I could not see it well. It is very complicated and I score the bend marks and paint inside grey first.

Model is finish now but I have painted it with Varnish and it is not yet dry to pick up.

I need to apply one more layer of Varnish. But it looks well enough now to show off...

MTB 102. This is real boat and on the internet it say it is still in existance today. It fought at Dunquerque and still make anniversary trip to Dunquerque today. I had to find photo of real boat becuase you have to make small parts from wood for masts and things. But I see in photo that model MTB 102 does not look much like real MTB 102 becuase on model the top cabin is as wide as whole boat. But on real boat 102 it is only half as wide, so you can walk around cabin on the deck. And on the real boat she has two large rocket lauchers one on each side. On model you can not add this because there is no room. Not a good model then! I make small masts from Bamboo Wood from BBQ Shrimp Skewer that I cut down to slivers. I need to make rope for front hand rails from something very thin. I spray with Varnish to make the surface look like plastic or old Tin Toy. Oh and grey cylinder on antenna is made from paper colored grey and rolled around wood.

http://i417.photobucket.com/albums/pp256/Carla_Lashelle/Final1.jpg

Some ink from inside of cabin bleed through the side leaving grey mark. Next time color pencil would be better than Marvy Pen.

http://i417.photobucket.com/albums/pp256/Carla_Lashelle/Final3.jpg

The cabin parts are very thin and when I colored with pen they got soft and twist some. But model is also VERY tiny but in photo looks larger. It is small. Real boat does not have three large antenna but seemingly two antenna that meet at cross bar.

http://i417.photobucket.com/albums/pp256/Carla_Lashelle/Final2.jpg

I need to find some small rope for the front posts but it is hard to attach rope like on the real boat becuase part of rope goes to the cabin, but the cabin on the model is not like the real MTB at all anyway so the rope can't be the same.

I like the little MTB and may give it away to friend.

You're building these too fast and too nicely. Makes me feel guilty for not working on mine for the last few days!

Nice little boat Keds_girl. And fast too. You really gave it a shiny finish with that varnish.

Hello KedsGL,

a nice opening for more; for the moment, I think there's a little hype on the micromodels in Europe as well - please, give me an idea of the dimension - in millimeters... :)

With lovely greetings

Another nice little project for your collection Lala. You are just turning them out left and right. Looking forward to more as you expand your horizons on the card model front.

I like this kit. I made a small diorama for it which you can view here (http://sitekreator.com/thewoodengraver61/gallery.html) if you wish. There are also a couple other Micromodels there. Some of them were built smaller than intended.:D

An interesting model indeed and nicely built, well done. Is the original kit still available somewhere?

I realise there are inaccuracies, but I'm positive the kit would prove usefull as a basis for a more accurate model.

Hi Wilfried... the boat itself is approx 2 cm by 7.5cm the base of course is larger

Model come as part of Micromodels Series B Set 1 British Fighting Ships. You can buy original set on eBay. I seel also CD for sale with files for this and other sets. I know not how legal or not those are. The original kits are mostly not too dear... maybe $5 - $15 USD. Then I recommend you make a copy so you have spare parts to practice with.

Here is FINISH boat now with guide ropes on bow. I make masts and posts from wood from a BBQ Shrimp Skewer. Rope is from very fine iron wire. I find wire as trash on the ground, but it is very thin almost like a hair. It is hard to fix the ropes as on the real boat becuase the house on the model is different from the real house, so the rope must differ also. And they are quite small and hard to fix.

I think workmanship is ok becuase model is smaller than it might look without knife blade for size.

I had started Micrmodels HMS Sealion Sub-Marine and make it this far but the last major part inside the tower did not fit. I fix it in wrong and then the tower was damage when I remove poor part. I threw model away then so picture is all that is left. This was very hard to build with no instruction.

I wish Sub-Marine had small base like MTB, next time I will make a base to go with.

Lala...

Very nice work on the MTB!! Good job on the detailing, and the way you have it mounted on the base..

Cheers.

I think the sub's pretty cool!

Good work,

Thank you. I like the sub-marine. It is hard. Seeminly there is something wrong with it and this was very first Micromodel set. So they re-issued the set with minor changes to other boats but the second sub-marine is all new. But I have original model only. I will remake it soon!

I make a new MTB 102 as well... since I throw the old one away...

Actually I have the old one but it is broke and in a box of parts I can not bear to look at...

Your new versions of these little ships are even better than the original ones, Oksana!

I remember now the issue from the first time. The middle structure of the boat it has sides that are parallel but the hull of the boat it taper from its widest part to the back... And the whole middle cabin it is one part with many bends and creases.

Nice clean build. I have trouble building such a small scale.

Now aside for the base that actually come with this model, all the parts have been make from the kit. The rest is to be fabricated from wood, etc.

KGL- since it's an MTB, where are the torpedo tubes on the original's plan/parts card?

I think I address this on my prior model in page 1 or 2 here. The real boat it has tubes etc but the model it looks nothing like the real boat. You can not fit the tubes since the house is the width of the boat hull. The real boat it has a narrow house and tubes on the sides.

If the boat it were drawn in white it would look like a water ski boat not a war boat.

Actually this craft didnt have tubes.
the british had these really funny looking torpedos, short and squat.
they were basically just bolted to the sloped side of the bow one on either side.
the torpedos were started and basically kicked into the water.
I suspect they had lousy aim.

The boat today it has tubes MTB 102 (http://www.mtb102.com/) The description say it had tubes versus just the torpedo sitting there.

It is nice the boat it survive until today but the model it does not look like the real boat.

I finish the MTB now. All I have not done yet is to spray it with Matte varnish and to put some Glaze over the water.

http://i697.photobucket.com/albums/vv339/Oksana_K/MTB-3.jpg

As you can see it is very tiny also. The model itself it is very simple with just six parts including the base. But then I make many small parts. The railings, masts, and tie downs they are all made from wood or wood fiber.

That is a lovely little gem, Oksana. The additional details you added make it a real standout - well done!

Pretty little model - you don't paint the sticks grey?

And how's the search for O'Glue?

Keds_Girl_Lala
08-06-2009, 06:45 PM
I could paint the wood. Some time I do that and some time not. I have found O Glue on line but no store near me sells it that I find. But I do not drive and can get only to Wal Mart and Ace Hardware most easy.
