My latest design is ready for it's beta build. If all goes well it should be available for sale in a week or two from ecardmodels.com. So without further ado... here it is, the build report!

This kit is a 1/48 scale Mil Helicopter MI-6 Hook that was developed in Sketchup, Pepakura and Photoshop. The kit has 17 pages of parts. Completed it should be around 24 inches long!

The MI-6 Hook was first flown in 1957, and at the time was the largest rotory wing aircraft in the world. Over 800 of these monsters were built from 1957 - 1981.

I have chosen for the paint job this bird

Here is a pic of some of the printed pages.

Ok here are some parts...
first off, the starboard main gear and primary strut

And then, to give you a better idea of the size of this monster, the forward end

Hey Nathan......... ever though of doing a tutorial on designing aircraft in sketchup? Or have I already missed it.:o

I barely stumble through myself. It took me about 6 months to draw the mesh. Pepa and photoshop I might do tutorials for.

Hey John I have found quite a few posts on using Sketchup over at rcgroups.com. This (http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=920416) thread in particular might interest you.

here are the Main Gear, with the main strut attached and the spreader struts sitting next to them. The spreaders will be attached to the main fuse first, and then to the gear strut

You're starting to get me hooked on helos again! The Hook is a great one. BTW, I'm almost finished on the Long Ranger repaint. I'm starting another test build today.

Might have to enlarge this to 1:33 just because it's so huge to start with!

n810
04-19-2009, 08:59 AM
I was originally going to do it in 1/33, but there were some pieces that wouldn't fit on the page. I know not everybody has a printer that will handle 11 x 17 paper, so i decided to do it at 1/48.

More pics will posted later today, including intakes, exhaust and the center fuse...

When you release it, please use at least a 300 dpi resolution for the images so we can enlarge to 1:33 with minimal loss of image quality.

Everything I release will always have a resolution of 300dpi or greater.

Some progress!
Found a couple of texture issues that are being corrected. Fit issues are due to my hands made entirely of thumbs and large doses of pain killers.
first up is the APU exhaust. this part is vital, although a little difficult to get placed correctly, but once it is in you don't even know it is there. Crazy.
http://www.zealot.com/gallery/data/778/medium/apu_exhaust.jpg
Next is a partially completed fuselage
http://www.zealot.com/gallery/data/778/medium/fuse_during_assembly.jpg
And the fully completed fuselage. You can see lots of dents from my fingers and clumsiness :( The ruler in the foreground is 18" long!

Hopefully I can get some more work competed tomorrow.

And finally, the boom and fuse assembly

If I may offer a humble suggestion. On the wings and spar, it might be better to
have just the spar go through the fuselage, then have the wings slide over
the spar the mate up with the fuselage.

Still looking great!

Actually, the wings go through the fuse for added support. a portion of the wing actually stays inside the fuselage. this elimiates some wing drop and adds to the structural integrity of the fuse.

More pics in a few hours. Build should be finished tonight or tomorrow. After that i will clean up the final pages a little and write the instructions. I should have this over to Chris by Tuesday, so hopefully we will get it up for sale by Friday. Price has yet to bedetermined, but most likey around $7-8

It's rather tail heavy, isn't it? Still, it looks good.

cgutzmer
10-17-2010, 03:42 PM
yes indeed its tail heavy, easily remedied by some weight in the nose like with many other models :) I didnt build it and I sure dont have time to open it up! heh heh - maybe some day.....

Hi N810, I currently am building your Hook (in 1/100) and I must say that although the parts go together very well, it's a really good fit, I starting to have some trouble with the instructions. I was lucky to find this thread here with the bigger photos, to find out how to assemble the build-up to the engine section. It was a mystery to me when reading the directions, they aren't very clear about where some pieces go... However, I now know how to continue. The first two small parts of the engine section have already found their way to the fuselage.
Here's some pics of the build.

I'd be interested if the Blue Thunder ever made it to paper as well. The MI-6 looks great!

Extra note: In 1/100t it's doable but I fear in full scale this Mi-6 really could do with some reinforcement bulkheads to help and form the complex shape. It keeps being fun, though, its kind of wrestling with the flat cut out shapes and making them bulge and curve. I use very thick paper, 200gr A4 for this build. It makes it easier to do edge glueing and it gives the hull some extra strength.

--I'll start a new thread for my build later today.
