View Full Version : Star Wars Rebel Transport

Here we go :D first post with my current work-in-progress model: Star Wars movie-based Rebel transport Gallofree GR-85 :D
I used as inspiration the "real" Gallofree GR-75 medium transport seen both in "the empire strikes back" & "the return of the jedi" => http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/starwars/images/e/eb/GR-75_Medium_Transport.jpg and decided to give it a bit more personality (read "weapons"). the real ship should be 90 m long, whereas my version is a bit smaller but faster. I designed it with Rhinocheros, printed the basic structure and starded the engines... even with some naiveties due to my inexperience with paper :o

The work done so far:
http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/863/p1000150.th.jpg (http://img6.imageshack.us/my.php?image=p1000150.jpg)

details of the lower hull
http://img122.imageshack.us/img122/8152/p1000152.th.jpg (http://img122.imageshack.us/my.php?image=p1000152.jpg)

the body, without luggage :D (you can see 1 of the naiveties, that yellow foam i used to support the lower plates, easy to deform: luckily it will be completely covered... I think next time I'll use paper ribs)
http://img162.imageshack.us/img162/5850/p1000153.th.jpg (http://img162.imageshack.us/my.php?image=p1000153.jpg)

the luggage; as you can see, I use a mixed technique, specially with kitbashing fot exterior details (and I have A LOT of respect for you all that use only paper!)
http://img230.imageshack.us/img230/1714/p1000164.th.jpg (http://img230.imageshack.us/my.php?image=p1000164.jpg) http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/4124/p1000165g.th.jpg (http://img156.imageshack.us/my.php?image=p1000165g.jpg)

main shield (I'm pretty happy with the 3D result, made with paper only)
http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/3872/p1000154.th.jpg (http://img98.imageshack.us/my.php?image=p1000154.jpg) http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/4828/p1000155x.th.jpg (http://img98.imageshack.us/my.php?image=p1000155x.jpg)

rear shield
http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/4436/p1000158w.th.jpg (http://img231.imageshack.us/my.php?image=p1000158w.jpg)

cannons
http://img262.imageshack.us/img262/5907/p1000159i.th.jpg (http://img262.imageshack.us/my.php?image=p1000159i.jpg)

ok, now dry assemblage, just to let you have an idea of the final result (second pic with 1 of the 4 lower plates; in the gaps there will be attached tha packages, containers and whatever-you-want needed in a base on a distant planet )
http://img262.imageshack.us/img262/3544/p1000162.th.jpg (http://img262.imageshack.us/my.php?image=p1000162.jpg)http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/9619/p1000163.th.jpg (http://img142.imageshack.us/my.php?image=p1000163.jpg)

hope you like :)
feel free to criticize and to ask, I'll appreciate it

That's pretty impressive Filippo. I think you have captured the Gallofree very accurately. Thanks for sharing.

glad you found it interesting :)
as probabily all of us, I feel a bit disappointed for just a couple of things during the building process...very uncommon, right? eheheh!
joking apart, the underside of the main shiel is a mess, even crooked... but it's covered so I'm "pardoned" for this time :D
I've also some questions about the paper, but I'll reserve them for a specific topic. anyway, as you could see, it's very small but this decision has been taken in order to keep the correct scale with the main ship of this little task force I'm gonna build... perhaps (http://freemovement.files.wordpress.com/2008/06/doh_homer_left.jpg)
the main ship is the EF-76 Nebul-B => http://bragewj.com/starwars/Nebulon-B.jpg I just began it but I'm stuck by a long list of problems  (I'll post some pix...)

little (really!) update :) sorry guys, very few time for this work

here you can see the completed sides of the inner hull and the main weapons assembled (I notice now that the the turret in the first pic seems a bit crooked... no no, just checked and no panic, it's only the photo :D)
http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/9265/p1000208large.th.jpg (http://img23.imageshack.us/my.php?image=p1000208large.jpg) http://img291.imageshack.us/img291/6023/p1000209large.th.jpg (http://img291.imageshack.us/my.php?image=p1000209large.jpg)

here the paper containers first, than the plastic ones (not really sure if I'll use all of them... it depends on how much free space there will be under the shield)
http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/9779/p1000212large.th.jpg (http://img19.imageshack.us/my.php?image=p1000212large.jpg)http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/4421/p1000213large.th.jpg (http://img20.imageshack.us/my.php?image=p1000213large.jpg)

and here... eheh, something I tried some time ago
http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/1496/p1000214large.th.jpg (http://img15.imageshack.us/my.php?image=p1000214large.jpg) it's a DX-9 ground troops transport (needs some last touches too)

here a comparison with the Gallofree, same scale (and you can also see the last finishes on the main hull, with the small bridge :) I decided to give it another shape compared to the classic one on the studio-scale model: never liked it, it's the worst part of that ship)
http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/6569/p1000216large.th.jpg (http://img15.imageshack.us/my.php?image=p1000216large.jpg)

yes, rhino is very powerful... http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/6794/rhinomedium.th.jpg (http://img12.imageshack.us/my.php?image=rhinomedium.jpg)

Ok, to be honest I don't know when I'm gonna complete this model, because now the biggest part of the work will be painting all the separated components (specially all the boxes) and then assemble everything... most of my spare time is in the evening and painting after dinner is a bit of a problem (not enough light, not enough time...). all my hobbies rise in my bedroom and I don't think it's very healty to mess around with paintings just before go to sleep. I don't know, but I feel it will be easier to begin with another model than end this one  ... ok, I'm joking :D I'll finish it as soon as I can

see you!

eheheh :) something is moving here, in the end :D
I found some time to give this amount a paper a touch of primer and, I must say that, I'm very happy with the result, specially for the bottom part:

http://img508.imageshack.us/img508/2294/p1000370large.jpg

all the details are well emphasized with this basic grey and I'm looking forward to see how it will look like when weathered
http://i27.tinypic.com/25jio7d.jpg
http://i25.tinypic.com/906kw1.jpg

maybe tomorrow I'll try something for all the containers and boxes.
the conclusion is coming :) (I hope so!)

ahh.... really, this time it could be almost impossible to publish it, because... well, this model is really a hybrid: I mean, there's paper, ok... but there's even a huge amount of "kitbashed" plastic and that's due to my (poor!) past in plastic scratchbuilding. when I decided to use paper instead of styrene, my mind gave birth to this ship, a sort of passage from a tecnique to the other. I think I could make available the paper structure but that would be, more or less, the 50% of the model. are you familiar with Rhinoceros 4.0?

thanx :) I'll answer both of you: I used normal paper covered with an adhesive clear plastic sheet (for the same reason of some lines before and that's why it doesn't seems paper) and the primer is a common gray spray paint. weathering will be added with a brush, I don't have any airbrush. that's way I'm interested in learnig how to put a texture on the model before printing it... less laborious  and if the texture is good enough, the result would be great the same

painting progresses:

I applied a white paint layer over the primer (spray), like the original transport, even to the lower shields (sorry, the light sucks...). just one coat: it allows the model to keep a sort of transaparence for the gray underneath that mucks up that "once immacolated" white hull.
http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/2236/p1000378large.jpg

the contrast is good IMO. it needs a light touch of sandpaper (also because, when spaying, a little fly flew through the paint jet :mad::mad: now there's a corpse stuck to the rear hull!!!)
http://img229.imageshack.us/img229/8741/p1000379large.jpg

I think the biggest part is done: now it's time to bring the brush and give some life to all the boxes and do some HEAVY weathering

hi folks :)
after a long brake I'm back on this ship and the end is approching very fastly. today I managed to complete all the containers and to attach them under the main hull. looking to the poor reference stuff found on internet, I couldn't get a good idea about the original support system for all those boxes, so I simply glued them together and directly to the hull... in a way, it's a maze ;)

work just begun

man, thanx :) this is REALLY a big compliment! yeah, that could be interesting... do you know if it is free? or do I have to log in before?

oh, I was forgetting the little update: I glued the two halves together :) now the model is a "sigle piece" and, well, almost complete: what I need now is a proper stand (clear I think) in order to display it with all the future ships around the nebulon B... a sort of "flotilla"

SSM is completely free; all you have to do is register. Just post it in the Star Wars forum, not the Card Models one. The former gets a heck of a lot more traffic than the latter, and the CM one is really geared for designers anyway.

If I may be so bold as to suggest a stand, bend coat hanger wire into a gentle curve, insert it into the side of the ship, and insert the other end into a predrilled hole in a wooden stand. Simple, elegant, not distracting, and the ship appears to float from certain angles. A lot of guys do this for their plastic models, and I love the effect.

thank you! :D when I was a child (I mean, more "child" than now!) that model (Ertl Hoth base diorama) was at the top of my wishlist. Years later I saw a very good review from a member on starshipmodeler.com here (http://www.starshipmodeler.com/starwars/jb_rebuild.htm) and it gave me the idea; I also used his pics as reference, very useful

Tirick

:o

I'm sad to say that while I have that diorama (I actually have both Hoth diorama sets), I've not had the time to put it together... which is a great excuse, provided I have not had them for almost a decade.

I saw that review, and I like the mods he did to the Falcon. Very poor Falcon in the set, really, although Ertl was never known for the accuracy of the SW kits (I think that LFL deliberately asked them not to be).

They are very good sets though, despite the massive scale differences (the Falcon is a little over half the length of the transport, but to scale, should likely be less than a third)!

I can't wait myself but I think it could pass a lot of time before because of my university business (new courses started this week). personally, I'm going to end my current models and I won't build anything new till next year, sparing the few free time I'll have taking some breath from studies  and gathering ideas and sketches with rhino...

Granted, yes I have been modeling (off and on) for 25 years, but I still have VERY CRUDE skills. :o
When I first got into this hobby, I thought that I was the only one that did such. Every on that I would talk about it thought that it was a "NICE" hobby, but really did not care and wondered why I did not make "REAL" (plastic) models. :(So It was not until I found this site (and Zealot), that I realized that there was such a following and that I was not the only "crazy" person on this planet.:D
So when I come across people like you, I feel like I just started this hobby yesterday (BTW, that was not an insult. Your skills are far better then mine and you do GREAT WORK).:o:o:o

Lemme see... it would have to be 2,4 cm long or so.. that sounds like fun :D I see a whole starfleet gathering on this forum, holy sweetness...

where I live there's only a bit of dissolved limestone in the water, so I suggest you to prevent your kidneys health and stay there! :D:D:D

Oh . . . so I *shouldn't* be chewing this piece of chalk?

*p-tooey!*

thank you both!!! :D
ok... I give you a little anticipation about my next challenge... because that's what it will be, totally...

it's a WIP, very very rough... but there's time :)

Wooow!!! THIS Ship? FANTASTIC!!:)

But I don't know what will be the most insane: creating this Ship, or (beta or standard) buid it??:D:D:D

Of course, I prefer like you would follow this thread than create it, but I will have to decide if I do more ;)

Nevertheless, you have all my supports, specially with your incredible sense of details and realism!!!!

Hmm... 1:500 scale or so?

the scale is very stupid: quite 1:547... I chose it in order to get a model of 55 cm, because bigger could be a problem to display in my room (in my ideas there was even a Calamari cruiser of my own design... a meter long... then I should drag my bed out of the house). even the bulk fr. and the transport are in the same scale, I'd love to build up a flotilla

yeah :) the starfleet is on the way. in order to match with the scale I used, your x-wing should be 2.3 cm long

And the Falcon thus about 6 cm long. Bit of an oddball scale, but I'll go with it... why not an even number, dare I ask, like 1:600... dumb question, I know.

:D
