View Full Version : Need a third design project.

Now that the Moonbat is out of my bellfry I find I need a new project to take its place. Currently there is the Super Corsair and the Staggerwing and I need a third one to keep me happy.

Here is the general criteria of what I am looking for:

1. Airplane

2. Somewhat obscure meaning that there aren't any models of it available commercially and only maybe one crude one available as a freebie. I want to sell it eventually so it can't be copyright protected.

3. Technically challenging. I took the moonbat on cause I wanted to see if I could do it, so possibly something that is also curvaceous.

4. I have to think it is cool looking. Only way to know on that I guess is if you ask me or if it looks like a corsair.

A couple of ideas for you (at least some of which I could help with drawings):

Martin 167 Maryland
Twin Aero Commander in Bob Hoover's markings
C-46 Commando
DH-91 Albatross
A-26 Invader
Bell YFM-1 Airacuda
MFI-9B

Other aircraft that are seriously under-represented include Pipers, Cessnas, and trainers of just about any sort.

Looks kinda cool Rick, what is it?

@Ryan, the A-26 kind of catches my fancy, and guess what? They used the cowling off one of these on the Bud Super Corsair. Serious points scored there.

Please everyone keep posting I want a lot of options.

IMHO, the Bell YFM-1 Airacuda certainly meets both cool and obscure criteria; my personal fav for obscure is the Abrams Explorer...interesting shape and construction but might be a little too complex for a paper model...

A Martin B-10 would be cool!

I've nver really cared for golden age aircraft. I really like the one Shrike posted but have a feeling that the reference material would be too scanty.

North American X-10 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_American_X-10)
Paul Musso's 'Musso Special Racer 'Real Sporty' (http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=943340)
I built the rubber band powered 'Sterling' version of this kit as a kid and loved it's cool and odd look. Plus it was a kit built with card sheet wings which made it unique to me. And it must be obscure, I can't find any pictures of the actual plane online so far ;)

I like all the suggestions, but would second Billy's suggestion of the Hughes XF-11 (Hughes XF-11 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hughes_XF-11)) and add the Lockheed XP-58 Chain Lightning (Fact Sheets : Lockheed XP-58 Chain Lightning : Lockheed XP-58 Chain Lightning (http://www.nationalmuseum.af.mil/factsheets/factsheet.asp?id=2262)).

My first idea was the Yak-36 ( Yakovlev Yak-36 - experimental VTOL-fighter (http://www.aviastar.org/air/russia/yak-36.php) ) but regarding your request of a cool looking plane I'd rather opt for Rockwells XFV-12A:

Rockwell XFV-12 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rockwell_XFV-12)
Rockwell XFV-12A - Aircraft of the Month - February 2000 (http://www.alexstoll.com/AircraftOfTheMonth/2-00.html)
http://steeljawscribe.com/2008/04/11/flightdeck-friday-vstol-dreams
Rockwell XFV-12A -> Drawing board Aircraft (Real World, all times) -> X-Plane 9 -> Aircraft -> Downloads (http://forums.x-plane.org/index.php?autocom=downloads&showfile=5822)

If you'd prefer Luft 46, that about a Wasp - Heinkel Wespe (http://www.luft46.com/heinkel/hewespe.html) ?

Here's my wish list: ( no particular order of importance )

Goodyear FG1 BuNo 13471-XF2G-1
North American RB-45 Tornado
Hughes XF-11
Republic XP-72
Curtis XP-87 Blackhawk
X-24A
X-24B

I like X-planes...can you tell?

Well go check gremir or ecardmodels for my Super Corsairs. I haven't done one with the turtle deck so maybe if that's what you're after then you'll probably have to wait awhile as I don't plan on doing one of those.

Well I have to admit that the front runner at the present moment is the XP-72 Super Thunderbolt. But having said that I still haven't decided for sure.

You do improve your chances of me deciding in your favor if you provide reference material (3views). I need to know there is enough reference to actually design it.

I've got a little XP-72 stuff. That's another great suggestion. Still think the A-26 would be great. So many options could work into that. Glass nose, gun nose, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, civilian executive transport, etc...

I'm not sure what they are like as kits but Hobby Model and ModelArt both does Cutlasses in 1/33 and 1/72 respectively...

Just FYI, Fiddlersgreen already has a Martin B-10

I looked into the Abrams Explorer, and it's fuselage is basically the same shape as the Sikorsky S-51. Keep an eye on Fiddlersgreen for it to appear sometime in the near future.

If you want obscure and odd, how about the Blohm und Voss BV-141?

The Fiddlers Green B-10 is pretty nice. Murphy did that one. ;) I think the Bell Aircuda or the Abrahms Explorer would be tops. But, I have always wanted an A-26. Hmmmmmm.

I don't have 3-views for the A-26, but I have close access and can get LOTS of pictures :D

I don't know just how good they are, but I do have some three-views for the A-26. I'm just not sure if they're up to Will's standards!

I have Paul Matt's books that have very nice 5-views of the A-26 with cross sections so what I really want would be all the pictures I could get, but Zot pm'd me and said he has a a good set of 3-views for the Superbolt and if they are adequate it will probably be the winner.

As usual I won't promise any release dates for anything, just that I will work on it as occasion permits and one day maybe you might see a thread appear and a request for alpha and beta builders. Maybe.

Once again my broken record is saying "CF-100, and the Avro Jetliner". The Clunk has only been done twice to my knowlege, once by Whilmashaven in the 60's and there is a pretty crude free one to be found on the net. The Jetliner has never been done.

how about a short stirling or an sm.81 pipistrello?

Wyvern

If you want something curvy and non-Golden Age, consider the Bristol Brigand: a post-war close-support twin that saw combat in Malaya with the RAF. Very under-represented in the modelling world.

And Gixergs and I would buy you a virtual beer!

Thanks for the suggestions but I've kinda stalled all across the board and have 3 projects still underway so I'll come back to this thread when one of them gets completed but right now I'm moving too slow to even measure progress so it might be awhile.

I actually saw one of those when I was in Seward Alaska this summer. Interesting looking critter. I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you. My general area of interest is single engine prop jobs, and I'm thinking right now that the PA-46 Enforcer (turboprop mustang conversion) is next on the list. But who knows some weird urge might come over me.

Let me suggest two aircraft from RFB,... the X-114 Catamaran Seaplane found here:

showcraft (http://www.se-technology.com/wig/html/main.php?open=showcraft&code=0&craft=71) There are also pictures of the Conceptual 'variant' designed by Luigi Colani (much sexier) but that hasn't gone beyond the model stage.

And also suggesting the Fanliner found here: RFB Fanliner mit dem EA871 Wankelmotor von NSU-Audi (http://www.der-wankelmotor.de/Flugzeuge/Flugzeuge_Fanliner/flugzeuge_fanliner.html)

... with a great photo here: Photos: RFB Fanliner Aircraft Pictures | Airliners.net (http://www.airliners.net/photo/RFB-Fanliner/1157900/L/&width=1024&height=769&sok=WHERE__%28aircraft_=_%27RFB_Fanliner%27%29_&sort=_order_by_photo_id_DESC_&photo_nr=1&prev_id=&next_id=NEXTID)

Both are smaller planes and from the mid 1900's but are unique in design.

Good luck-

The fanliner is certainly an interesting aircraft but right now I have about 6 different projects going and none of them very fast, so don't hold your breath.
