Ok, so this is an official Texas Tailwheel / Ryan Short competition starting soon. I've run a few in the past... such as this one: http://www.papermodelers.com/forum/design-requests/1133-new-ww2-light-military-aircraft-design-contest.html?highlight=Contest+Ryan

Theme: 1919-1973 Civilian Aviation and surroundings

Two categories:

Simple: 1/64 or smaller scale (ie. 1/100 would be in this category): Subcategories: Pre-WWII, Post WWII
Complex: 1/63 or larger scale (ie. 1/24 would also be in this category): Subcategories: Pre-WWII, Post WWII

Rules:

1. Pick any subject with a civilian aircraft or airport in a period, vintage picture - this could include a building, car, hangar, aircraft, tug, or anything that is in the photo - and you have to link the photo with your design.
2. If the category is simple, no interior needed, if complex, some more details, preferably some sort of engine / interior detail will be required.

Prizes: To be announced (donations welcome!)

Judging: TBA

For sure a people's choice poll.

Duration / finish date: TBA

I may need a couple of volunteers to help with the contest.

I'll wrap up the contest details when I get back from the weekend!

If there's enough interest, it's on!

I'm in. I'm travelling around nc for a week so I'll get a late start but I'll try to crank somehing out in time :) Don't plan on winning but it's good practice and I can judge too

Edit: by civilian does that mean private civil aviation or are airliners a choice too?

Any aircraft / scene showing non-military / civilian activity. That could include airliners, and could even include military aircraft like a P-51 in civilian markings for an air race.

Ryan,

To make sure I get this right, would the Airflow tanker truck on this picture would qualify for your contest?

Also, what would be the deadline you have in mind? If I get enough time, I would be tempted... mostly for the challenge.

This contest is a good idea, I wish enough people will share their interest on this post.

I'm in. Sounds like fun and a chance to design/build something I don't usually do.

Absolutely, as would the building, too.
I'm out until Tuesday so if I don't respond further, it's because I'm on a beach!

Restricted for designer like me?

Is it only for new designs or can it be a modification of an existing design (more than just a repaint) with appropriate credit to the original designer?

John

Looks good on the response so far... Standby this week for formal thread and finalized rules, and yes, any designer can enter. I'm mulling over the modification / repainted model idea, but it is likely a separate category.

Hey guys, the competition is on, and I'm planning on making the official final thread in the next day or two, but I'm stuck out tonight and worried about stuff going on in my current hometown in Dallas. :/

Can't see them, but this isn't the final thread, either. I just got back from a rather amazing trip that included a gear-up landing - mechanical failure not mental.

This are Peter's photos. He asked me to upload them, as they didn't load in his attempt.

Wow! What is the scale of these little beauties? The model T trucks really add something to the dioramas. ;)

What, you have a 120RG? :) Glad to hear it is all manageable.

And, those Peter Zorn models - whow, I am not even in the league, never mind the game. Certainly something to strive for. I appreciate the examples of what can be done with talent and time and talent and skill and talent. Did I mention a real gift of talent.

With admiration,
John

That's definitely the idea, but my intent was to spark new designs, people picking a photo and modelling at least one piece from the scene for the contest, not taking a pre-existing model and photographing it in a diorama, although that certainly is going to improve the presentation!

Can it be a digital model designed to be paper model?

How you design it is up to you, it has to be build in the end...

Ok, I will try to do my own instead of playing with the ones done by the experts. This one in the prewar, and will try in 1/24. Though there are some similar, I have not been able to find one of these. Will have to see if there is time before the closing date.

Ok, dumb question. Can we do a diorama to recreate a photo? I just stumbled across this:

Of course! The idea is to have at least one object from the photo, but the full diorama or part of it is completely acceptable.

In my efforts to recreate this photo,

I have reached the 1/3rd point

Next up is the Helicopter, which has been printed out.

Step 3 is a base, and trying to recreate the background.

Hey guys, I'm sorry, but I had a last minute move and work has had me slammed the last two weeks. The contest is a go - I was going to give it until the last week of September for people to have plenty of time to enter.

Cami

I scaled by eye to match the scale of my S-58's, so about 1/32ish. I couldn't identify the truck in the picture, but the picture was taken in Brussels, Belgium. The model is just a generic interpretation of a European refueling truck from the 50's.

By the way, the 2 prominent buildings in the picture are still there. The one on the left is the Citroen factory/ dealership. Dunno what the one with the high peaked roof is. Do we have any members in the Brussels area that could recreate the background in a picture? Google streetview doesn't have the right angle or distance.

So, I am officialy in and a very early stage of my entry design can be seen here; http://www.papermodelers.com/forum/camis-projects/36637-1939-dodge-airflow-truck.html

I will do my best to get this done on time... at least the prototype.

Anyway, we are doing this for fun right?

Cami ;)

P.S. The reference picture with the TWA refueler truck is on post 5.

Hey guys, I want to apologize that this never got further. Some "real" life stuff really went south on me over the last year and it's not over. Great work, even if not as much as I'd hoped to inspire.

Enough to make you a hater over your own outlook. Remember that it's always darkest before everything fades to black...,

I have a name for the contest though - "The Never Ending but Never Started World Renown Paper Models of Historical Vignettes and Stuff"...,

Ryan, hope your stuff gets itself together again and soon. I'm wondering if there's still time for me to never finish an entry?...,

1. LOL, I wish that didn't have a ring of truth to it.
2. Indeed.
3. Totally!
