Hello!

This is my build of the vintage "Moon Palace" that Tom Greensfelder kindly shared with us
in post #17 of this other thread: http://www.papermodelers.com/forum/vintage-models/37407-familie-journal-christmas-papertoy.html

For this build I used my own color-corrected version which you can find on post #28 of the above link.

I printed the kit on 160gsm cardstock, at double letter size (11X17 inches - 28X43 cm).

The final size of the kit once built at this scale is about 12X12 inches (32X32 cm).

This is a vintage kit from 1930. Some details are not so good, and there are a couple of fitting issues.
However, I believe they add some character to the model.

One word of warning:
The big crescents need to be laminated on a sturdy cardstock.
That big moon needs to be at least 1mm or 1.5mm thick in order to hold shape.

Otherwise, once you put the thread on the points of the moon to hang it
the weight of the palace will make it bend oddly.

I didn't realize that until it was too late, and had to change the way it is hung.
That's why I used some nylon thread anchored on the points you see in my photos.

But if you use a proper material sandwiched between the crescents, you will be able to
use the suggested anchor points for the thread without problem.
That will also help the palace to stay more vertical.

Now.. on to the photos.

The instructions for this part may be not so clear.
It is a terrace with verandah

Here's a photo:

http://www.papermodelers.com/forum/attachments/vintage-models/303190d1482761995-moon-palace-moon_palace_09.jpg

I made the mistake of assembling the whole structure before attaching its base to the Moon.
Beware that you should glue first the yellow base to the moon as per the instructions given in the kit
and then afterwards build up the rest of the tower.

Thanks for reading!

Looks good.
I am slowly working on the same model. :)

I printed the crescents on some cardstock at first and noticed like you that they did not seem very sturdy even when laminated together so I reprinted them on some stiff Bristol board. Going to use those instead.

Did you notice that the slots to put the building bases on the crescent did not seem long enough? I cut a little bit down on the lines between the lettered sections on the crescent so the base of the building would slide far enough down to get the two tabs on each lettered section on the crescent to line up with the top of the bulding base that gets glued to the crescent. There is a drawing in the instructions that shows those bent out tabs lining up that way.

...

...
Specially on the base structures of sections "A" and "B". Not so much on "C" and "D".
Those slots certainly need to be adjusted. Instead of cutting on the crescent
I lengthened the slots on the base structures. The result is basically the same

One thing I found strange is that there were no small crescent moons for the lower towers in "C", or the smaller houses in "D"
although the original drawings do show pins on top of them. If you have spare small moons they could be added there with great effect.

Looking forward to your finished model :)

That is a really cool model, and a nice, neat build on your part. Quite precise for a hand drawn vintage kit, too. The coloring is garish, but the use of primary colors seems to have been the standard of the time. Well done!

Rubén: really nice build. It's a tricky model for sure. I meet with a bunch of guys once a month and every once in awhile they agree to build some paper models. That's Ross, Scott and Jim holding some Epinal models in the first picture. In the second one you can see Steve on the left starting on the Man in the Moon Castle.

He didn't manage to finish it that evening but completed it later. The third picture is the finished Castle in his studio.

He found that it worked best if you laminated the two sides of the moon to a piece of mat board. Otherwise, the moon will warp and not support the castle very well. There are also a number of fit issues, as you now know.

I was curious about what this model would like in B&W, so I played around with it in Photoshop for 15 mins or so, and came up with an updated version. I used a photo of the full moon to texture the yellow crescent, and then rendered the whole page(s) in grayscale. I haven't decided if I'll build it this way or not, but I thought I'd show you what I came up with. What do you think?

Don - looks interesting in B and W. I would run this version through a photo editor to sharpen it up, as I think this would improve the looks in B and W.

Ruben - a great model this and I am very tempted! Thank you very for posting it!

Black and White looks interesting. And the textures also add something.

In a way this model reminds me of the Silver Millennium castle of the Moon Kingdom from the Sailor Moon anime.

I have thought on reworking it in lighter colors to get a Sailor Moon-esque look.

Or probably design a proper Silver Millennium, since there is not a single paper model of it.

What do you think? That it would have the flavor of something from a 1930's comic strip or from a silent movie.

As noted by others there were some fit problems and I probably used more time than needed trying to make everything line up and cover up, but all in all it was a fun build.

If we extract only the black channel, the kit can be used to be recolored, or even printed like that to be used for children's activities :)

It would be interesting to see how kids recolor this model with their own hands.

My build. I opted out of adding the small crescent finials, because I'll probably end up mailing this to someone, and it's fragile enough as is.

I printed it on 11 x 17 cardstock at FedEx Office, so it has a nice slick, toy-like surface. I didn't bother to darken the scored edges, because it's cartoon-y enough that I don't think it needs that kind of fine craftsmanship.

I laminated the big banana shapes on to some black museum board for stability.

It's not really hung properly yet. I'm thinking about using some heavy wire to make the crescent extend around into a complete circle, and hanging it from that.

As others in the thread have noted, the fit of some pieces is pretty terrible, but the model is so charming, I don't think it matters if some of the pieces are a little cattywumpus.

That idea to use wire to extend the crescent is interesting. It could be a nice artistic addition, maybe spray paint the wire in a shade of gold or use some of that decorative craft wire.:)

getting ready for my own build. I worked up the graphics a little bit more,
and after reading the warping issues I double laminated the moon using the
bonding trick from this thread:

http://www.papermodelers.com/forum/tips-tricks/28353-bonding-gluing-cling-film-food-wrap-works.html

I first laminated two layers of 65lb paper, then I laminated that to a manila
envelope. That should be thick enough so when I glue that to corrugated
cardboard I won't get any warping from the white glue. I am expecting my
moon to be at least 6mm thick, and I have printed yellow paper to fill the 6
mil thickness to make the moon look like a solid piece. I have also done some
color work on one of paperpino's celestial globes, and plan to use that as an
"awning" over the courtyard with embedded LED lighting so the whole thing
acts like a night light. paperpino's globe will be printed put together as a half
dome, with print on both sides, actually I just printed the northern hemisphere
at 101% and fit the 100% sized southern hemisphere on the inside to make a
dome like at grand central station. this way I can run the wiring for the leds
between the two layers so no wires show.

Quite wonderful to see all these builds of this vintage model and so many of the alterations I've thought of but never realized. Putting the actual moon's surface on the crescent looks great. I'm particularly interested in seeing the black and white version assembled as that will look the most "moonish" to me.

ps. Someone should do a "green cheese" version!

If we extract only the black channel, the kit can be used to be recolored,
Can you tell me of a good introduction to this?
I know how to fill areas of a certain colour with another colour by using a "magic wand" tool, but to delete every colour except one like black outlines, epecially when these are not in one piece, is another matter.
This would be extremely helpful for recolouring!

Cheers, Martin

I use PaintShopPro. You can open the pages with the Moon crescents then use the Lasso select tool to outline the crescent so just that area will be affected by any editing you do.
You can then goto Adjust>Hue and Saturation>Colorize and play with the sliders to get the crescents to the shade of green you want.
There are most likely similar controls in other graphics programs like PhotoShop

Here is an example:

This is a quick glance at how I do it using Photoshop:

1. Convert the image to CMYK mode.

http://www.papermodelers.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=305345&d=1485266919

2. Select only the key (Black) channel from the channels panel.

http://www.papermodelers.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=305346&d=1485266919

3. If the black lines show too washed, use the "levels" control to darken them.

http://www.papermodelers.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=305347&d=1485266919

After that, you can select all (Ctrl+A) and copy that channel to a new image for editing. The result is all the darkest lineart isolated from the original image.

Take into account that it may show some darker shadows too, as some bricks and parts of the conical roof in the last picture. You can solve that by using several methods: eraser, magic wand, burn/dodge tool, brightness/contrast, levels, etc.

Hope that helps you! :)

the thing is, there are dozens of photo editing software programs out there and within each of them probably a dozen or so ways to do it. What you need to do if find ONE photo editing program that you get reasonable success using, and then explore how that one can be used to get the job done. Personally I use the 1999 version of Paint shop pro (6.0) the ones afterwards are too complicated for me, and things like photoshop, gimp, Ifranview, all don't work for me although I tried.
I've now been using PSP for over 17 years, and it has yet to fail me. I've spend 1,000's of hours learning its tricks and trades, and I'm not about to start that learning curve again. FWIW.

oh and to get the colors in the B&W moon I cut away all the parts that were not the moon, then applied Colors->Adjust->red/green/blue and played with the sliders till I got my shade of yellow that I liked. Actually I found the color yellow halfway to what I wanted and then applied the shift a second time to get it perfect.

jleslie48
01-24-2017, 02:03 PM
and to get the coloring version,

I took the image, color spit in in cmyk,
then took the black version and reversed the colors,
then dumped white paint on the grey telling the software to loose match the color by a factor of 22,
then darkened what was left

this post is taking longer to write than to do the procedure.

Ok, so back from vacation and the build went exactly as planned. Still
working on the lighting kit, the led's are so powerful the entire canopy glows,
so I'll have to put a sheet of black paper in the middle of the top half and
bottom half to stop the light bleeding through and showing the internal
structure. When I hang it from the two wires, it is not straight up and down,
but I will add some pennies to the inside of the "B" structure to balance that

Thank you!
I have been working with PSP a few years ago, converting RGB graphics to CMYK when preparing some documents for professional printing.

I am using GIMP. I will download a plug-in to do this and experiment a bit.

I just saw that in GIMP, Threshold is probably going to be a fairly easy alternative. It looks like you will need to do parts individually this way, though. If you do the full page, getting one part to look correct, messes up all the others. I plan on playing with this tonight

well she is done. the wire is a bit heavy (22 gauge,) so I'm gonna replace it with some motor winding wire (30 gauge) shortly. I also added a "comet" bar to keep the wires separated. the model was tipped to its side when I first strung it, so I added washers to the inside of the "B" section on one side until it was balanced.
