View Full Version : August 2017 KoolWheelz Release Party!!

To recap my Fund Raising efforts...this summer I have been trying to generate extra Hobby revenue
to fund a trip to the Intl. Paper Modelers Convention in Virginia (this fall).
My Daughter also wants to visit the Natl. History museum in Washington,
so I thought I might combine the two trips.
And so, I've asked for fans to buy some models, purchase a custom Paper Model tee shirt
or just make a donation.
Unfortunately I still have a long way to go to fund the trip...so before I release this batch of new KoolWheelz models,
let me just remind you once again if you wouldn't mind contributing in some way.

You can order models from me, or thru Paper Model Shop Home (http://www.papermodelshop.com), or thru Ecardmodels.com (http://www.ecardmodels.com)
You can buy Tee shirts through my website: Paper Model T-Shirts (http://davesdesigns.ca/cutandfold/html/t-shirts.html)
You can make a donation at PayPal.Me (http://www.paypal.me/airdave)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Okay...enough of the begging....lets get to some new (FREE) KoolWheelz models!!

As promised, some new KoolWheelz models that I have been working on over the last month.
Trying to catch up on my to-do list before i get inundated with more suggestions! lol

Anyway, in no particular order, the following models are set for publication...
Lets have a Poll....I'm curious...which models are you most interested in?
Which model do we need to release first?

https://www.mediafire.com/convkey/a6d8/0c6mtt84oqqgep16g.jpg

They are:
The Beatles Magical Mystery Tour Bus
1972 Ford Capri (my first Car!)
1985 Audi GT Coupe (my best car!)
Thunderball Aston Martin DB5 (yup, James Bond)
Porsche 935 le Mans (driven by actor Paul Newman)
Red Baron (another Tom Daniel's favorite)
Johnnycab (from the original Total Recall)
Goodyear Grabber Olds (actor James Garner's offroad racer)
Syd Mead's Sentinel Limo (from Mead's original concept. Not the Hot Wheels car)

Dave, I've bought a T-Shirt, and I own most of your models, and I'll buy you a beer at the airshow when we go. Do you want my blood too?;)

I keep bouncing around trying to decide. I think I better leave it to chance and not vote (unless I can change my mind over and over again)

airdave
08-02-2017, 04:42 PM
well, since you was the one who brought up the Newman Porsche
I would have expected a vote there...but LOL this is how you bounce.

Vermin_King
08-02-2017, 05:38 PM
I know, but I also brought up the Johnny Cab, the Red Baron and the Aston Martin.

And I'm intrigued by the Garner Olds, the Limo, the bus, the Audi and Capri, so ...

who voted on every model?! LOL you're only supposed to vote for two!!!

seriously, just vote for one or two, that way we get a fair assessment.
I'm thrilled to see the choices unfolding.
This is very interesting.
The Aston was leading the pack for quite a while,
and then the Porsche caught right up...
but now the Capri is beating them both!

I thought it would be a little fun to do the Poll,
but its turning out to be very informative.
Keep going!!

airdave

so...somebody finally felt the need to cast a vote for "no steenkin' models".

you just had to share that pearl of wisdom, didn't you?!
just had to cast a negative vote.

well, let me say something...

ever since I started this koolwheelz project, I have reiterated the fact
that I make koolwheelz models for me first.
I model cars that have special meaning or interest to me.
I sometimes get ornery when I receive many suggestions for subjects that don't interest me.

But I recognize that everyone has their own interests.
And I don't expect everyone else to have the same interests as me.
You aren't gonna like all my KoolWheelz subjects...maybe not any of them!

So...Aero...you have my full APPROVAL for casting a vote in that way.
Especially since I included that vote option!
LOL
I think its great that we have such diversity of interest
and that we can choose to like or not like every interest.

I hope this doesn't start a trend of negative votes, but I am totally okay with this!
Now go away (aero) and play with your Airliner models! lol

airdave
08-03-2017, 08:56 AM
I am totally fascinated and perplexed by the constant shift in votes.
Now the Red Baron has taken the lead with the Capri model!
Yesterday I honestly thought the Aston was a shoe in!
By the time I write this, it may have changed again!

LOL
This is so cool.
I am really enjoying this Poll thing.

How long should I let this run for?
I set the Poll for 12 days.
How about we wrap it up Sunday night?
I could tally the votes on Sunday...and post the first model around suppertime?
Or, is there another suggestion?

Not to pry... but how short are you...?

err... for the trip that is... (not in stature...)

airdave
08-03-2017, 11:28 AM
5' 6" ...so pretty short. But I make up for it in volume.

I don't want to discuss actual finances here.
But I worked out a plan and all the related costs at the beginning of the year
(to cover the drive to Virginia, the IPMC affair, and another 2-3 days of Hotel and Museum visits...for two people)

and to date, I have raised only about half of my estimated requirement.
(Its been a slower year for sales, than past years. I'm sure everyone else feels the pinch.)

My hobby must pay for itself...thats a requirement I came up with a few years ago.
I exist on a tight personal budget.
My hobby is an expense I sometimes cannot afford.
So I sell models and ask for donations
and everything I earn from Model sales, donations, and related income...
goes straight back towards all my model related expenses*.

*This includes not just models, supplies and tools...
but also computer software and hardware upgrades,
and various related expenses for shows and paper model events.

I appreciate the question...
its nice to know I have some support and interest from other members.

hey...if I don't make enough for the trip this year, theres always next year, right?

Vermin_King

I think folks are changing their votes. A couple totals have gone down

airdave
08-03-2017, 12:17 PM
well, how is that being done?...and why?!

I haven't figured out how to change a vote.
(lol yes, I voted on one model just for fun)

unless its a mod?...can a mod change their vote?
is a mod changing votes?!

you guys are playing with butterflies! (not fire! butterflies!)
if you piss me off, I'll have to go get the boat.

are you sure numbers went down?
don't mess with the poll, its important.

rickstef
08-03-2017, 12:21 PM
no, no one can edit their votes, I can't even go into the backoffice and change or delete a vote

some people are not using both of their votes, then again, there is one who voted for all of the files.

airdave
08-03-2017, 12:27 PM
okay thanks Rick.

I see the problem is vote count.
There is now another person who has voted for more than two.

I specifically asked for "two" votes, to keep things fair.
If everyone votes for all the models, I don't get a fair reading of the choices.
Cmon guys, play by the rules.
This is serious science here.
World Peace...and my sanity...is at stake.

Eventually all the models get released.
Why u gotta ignore da rules?

Vote for 1 or 2 for your favorite(s).

Vermin_King
08-03-2017, 01:21 PM
I am reasonably positive that earlier today the Red Baron had 19 votes and one of the others had 18. That's why I mentioned it

airdave
08-03-2017, 01:28 PM
I am reasonably unsure if you are correct...lol
Not saying either way at this point.

...honestly, don't know if Red Baron hit 19.

Point is, there doesn't seem to be a way to remove or change your vote.
I voted once, but for only one model...and now I am unable to add a second model vote.
I also don't see a way to change my first vote.
And Rick has told us that he cannot change the votes.
Only thing he, or I, can do is end the Poll.

Its all in fun...but those who choose not to play by the rules (well, more like guidelines really)
will not be invited to any more reindeer games.

rickstef
08-03-2017, 01:36 PM
I did see that I can edit the vote tally, but not remove the person who has voted, I think you can do this as well Dave, click on edit poll, and that should bring up a different screen with the options and poll votes

tru dat....tru dat

maybe long before?!

Well, it looks like the James Bond Aston Martin has really pulled ahead now.
Will it stay there?
Oh this so exciting.
I can't wait until tomorrow.
But, I must.
Oh its so difficult.

airdave
08-06-2017, 07:47 AM
LOL
I looked yesterday...thought "this is gonna be simple"
Aston Martin DB5 had a clear lead.
The result was obvious.

I checked in this morning, thinking "if the DB5 is that far ahead, maybe I'll release it early".

And lookey see what I find!
Aston vs Red Baron
James Bond versus Von Richtofen!
LOL

...........
Interesting to see who voted for what.
I am surprised with a few of the votes.
Good information though.
just click on the vote counts to see who voted.

airdave
08-06-2017, 03:49 PM
Well, as we approach some sort of imaginary deadline...
looks like we have a tie.

The James Bond Aston Martin DB5 ...and Tom Daniel's Red Baron !!

Two very different types of vehicles.
Looks like only 4 people (out of 26+26) voted for the same cars.
So 44 people split evenly and voted very differently.
That gives us a clear separation...two groups...two different tastes in car models.
Or not...LOL...maybe its just a fluke, I don't know.
But it sounds good.

So I guess I better release these two models right?

Stay tuned...I'll post in my KoolWheel thread first...and then back here.
With rules for the next release.

airdave

OKAY...TWO NEW KOOLWHEELZ MODELS PUBLISHED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

http://www.papermodelers.com/forum/591516-post1855.html

Now, pay attention, heres the deal....

The first build I see (of the James Bond DB5 or Red Baron),
will begin the release of the next two KoolWheelz models.
(I'll use the vote count to pick the next releases? does that sound okay?))

You got two models to choose from....unfortunately they're not easy builds.
LOL You picked 'em!

Build however you like...I'll even allow upscaling (lol) and post a pic or two here.
First person to do so might also get an extra prize.
I don't know what yet...I have no idea...don't be surprised if you get nothing! lol

Have fun...let me know what you think.

airdave
08-07-2017, 11:56 AM

I need the rest.

...
Obviously I taught you guys too well (how to build koolwheelz models)!!!

Don Boose
08-07-2017, 12:15 PM
I'll try to take a week on the next one.

Hope I am not disqualified for making 3d wheels. I took the diameter of the wheels (13mm) and multiplied by pi to get a circumference of 41mm (that there is mathematics, that is), swabbed some card with black Faber-Castel ink, then cut out four wheels (Images 1 and 2). Punched out the machine gun muzzle covers with my drill punch (Image 3). The other construction shots show the Don Weeks (rockpaperscissors) Automovile Moderne in the background (the Conodoguinet Motor Car Company Pty Ltd has been busy today).

Four shots of the completed model. I was surprised and dismayed to see that the top of the windshield/windscreen does not match up with the side windows, especially on the near side. I thought I had been particularly precise with that join, but either my hand shook or my astigmatism betrayed me.

Very deftly designed, Dave! Thanks.

Don

airdave
08-07-2017, 12:36 PM
Don...you named the car wrong.
Aston models are named after David Brown DB (not BD)...and there shouldn't be a dash in the model name (DB5)

Black Registration Number Plate goes on the rear.
White one on the front.
I didn't label them, but it is visible in the assembly photos on the model sheet.

...
The front guns were single shot gun barrels (tubes really).
Hidden behind the small front turn signal lamps (which just flipped open and down).
Unfortunately a bit too small to represent well on the model.
The builder can modify as they wish (as you have done Don).

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2010/10/27/article-1324377-0BC763A6000005DC-351_306x350.jpg

...
re: Wheel treads...I was thinking of including them as an optional item
but I didn't have much room left on the sheet...so I didn't.
Another builder modification.

...
The windshield is definitely a tricky one to line up.
It might not be perfect.
You have to start by lining up the front of the roof precisely.
It takes a bit of patience.
Even I didn't get it right.

I could have left the windscreen to end on the front panel,
but I wanted those curved wraparound upper corners.
Which makes it more difficult to line up.
My apologies.

I'll need a day or two to prepare.
I didn't think you guys would be this quick!

airdave

Excellent Don!

I don't supply Instructions or Assembly Diagrams for every model.
Some models are pretty straightforward and the photos on the Model Sheets usually provide enough information.

Some models require a bit more explanation and so I add diagrams on the Model Sheet ...if theres room.
If there isn't enough room, I create a separate Assembly sheet.

Assembly sheets can be downloaded for free...there is a section on my Forum just for KoolWheelz Assembly.

I did not create a separate Assembly sheet for the Aston Martin
because I thought it was easy to figure out...
but I have since added a couple of Build Tip images to assist builders.
These can also be found in the KoolWheelz Assembly section.

This is one of them:

Don Boose

I found the construction notes and image of the model to be very helpful, especially the sequence of gluing up the body. The little line drawings clearly showed the way the model goes together.

Don

airdave
08-07-2017, 06:03 PM
Don, can you send me a larger resolution copy of that?
I can add it to my collection.

You didn't choose to use the Bullet Screen?
Obviously its an optional item.
But you really need to cut the slot before folding the body part anyway.

The original DB5 makes an appearance in Skyfall.
But it gets destroyed...shot up mercilessly, near the end of the film [spoiler-sorry].
The car that is destroyed is actually a Porsche 928 with CGI overlays.
They also use a miniature scale model.
It is unbelivable realistic and lifelike...but only about 1/3 scale.

AND...you can buy one of the same scale models built by Aston!
Its mostly a 3D printed model...and Aston Martin sells them for £28,000

Don Boose
08-07-2017, 06:51 PM
Dave -

Higher resolution image is on the way.

I did not choose to install the bullet screen. I thought it detracted from the appearance of the model car.

Looking forward to the Capri and Audi. Last year I seriously contemplated buying a 2011 Audi A4 with standard transmission, but in the end I decided to keep my 17-year-old Subaru Forester. Just put green duct tape over the hole in the rear quarter panel.

http://www.papermodelers.com/forum/591697-post1858.html

Lets see a Red Baron completed...before I release the next model!

Don Boose
08-08-2017, 01:48 PM
I like the Capri. Thanks for the optional tire treads.

Can I assume that the sequence of gluing up the body parts is essentially the same as for the Aston-Martin?

Don

airdave
08-08-2017, 05:00 PM
The Aston benefits from attaching those rear panel tabs first,
and then starting at the front edge of the roof and working rearwards.
Finishing the bonnet and nose last.

The Capri doesn't have the stepped rear section, or any peculiar angles.
There aren't even have any curved sections.

It doesn't matter too much where you start on this one.
The attachment of side body panels to center body strip is much more straightforward.

However, (on most model cars like this) I have a preference of starting at the roof sections .
Then I work forwards and backwards at the same time.
Always trying to line up those roof corners precisely for best results.

Don Boose
08-09-2017, 11:03 AM
Another one complete. Another one very well designed for easy assembly and realistic appearance.

Can't wait for the Audi.

Now, this is a very interesting story. I never knew the Capri was sold outside Europe. It was one of my childhood favourites.
I will build the model as soon as my present project is finished.
For another variation on this car that could complement this neat model of yours, have a look at this download from the german "racepaper" site: http://www.racepaper.de/race/gt/download/ford_capri_01_kl.pdf
Story behind this one is that in the late 1970-ies cars like the Capri, BMW 320 or Porsche were heavily modified and raced in a class named "Group 5" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Group_5_(racing)) that may be roughly comparable to the american Stock Car Races. We kids loved them!

Cheers, Martin

airdave
08-09-2017, 06:16 PM
Capris were raced over here too.
We have all the same road racing...not just stock car.
I fell in love with Capri's for that reason.

The Group 5 racers were the Zakspeed cars.
Capris have always been modified and raced in many other series,
but I think Zakspeed was the only team running Capris in the FIA sanctioned series.

North America isn't only Nascar and Indy you know!?

airdave
08-10-2017, 01:55 PM

I know Rick is working on one, but he's slow as molasses. lol

Ich entschuldige, aber I do not wish to build the Red Baron and will wait patiently for the Audi and look forward to seeing Red Barons built by others.

I will probably build the racing Capri, too, for which, much thanks, Martin. I presume Volker's model is 1/43. I plan to shrink it to the same size as the Koolwheelz Capri, which I think is 1/49 (actual vehicle wheelbase = 2560mm; model wheelbase = 52mm).

The DB5 and Capri were small cars. I have rockpaperscissors's refined version of the late 30s Spanish paper model "Automovile Moderne" under construction. It is 1/47, but provides a rough comparison.

Auf Wiedersehen für jetzt.

I just finished putting last bits onto my version of the Red Baron.
I printed the kit at default settings only bumping up the print settings.

All red parts were edge colored with a thin red Sharpie, the black parts with thin black, and a sparing touch of the silver Sharpie to retouch the "chrome" parts.

Hope you enjoy the pictures.

Yes! We have a Red Baron!

airdave
08-10-2017, 09:30 PM
hahahaha das ist gut!!!

I did a bit of reading on the Red Baron when I was creating it...
I tried my best to follow the original Tom Daniel's design
which he had created for Monogram (plastic models)
but I kind of blended the model with the full size car.
I think I made the front wheels a bit too big...they are more like the full size version.

http://gufifut.hegewisch.net/sideshow/RB-box.JPG

Apparently he used a real WW1 German Daimler straight six engine for the motor inspiration.
Something he found in a local California museum.
And the original artwork for the plastic model box featured a chrome Helmet cab.
(The original model did too!)

Later, when Monogram decided they wanted a full size Red Baron for promotional use,
they went to master builder Chuck Miller
who used a straight six Pontiac racing engine in the car.
I guess working WW1 BiPlane engines are hard to come by?!

Not only did the new motor feature a different Air Breather...a chromed German Soldier's Helmet ,
but the chromed Exhaust Pipes exited on the left side of the car
rather than on the right side as in Tom Daniel's original design.

Another difference with Chuck Miller's 1:1 version was:
the Cabin Helmet was now painted gray instead of being Chromed.

I did use Chuck Miller's Iron Cross wheel covers which were not on Daniel's original version,
instead of the Iron Cross wheels which are harder to see.

Anyway...good job on the build.
Hopefully we'll see some more?

And I will prepare the Porsche 935 for release.

Holy fast-folding-paper BatDon!

What has happened to you?
You have become a furious folder...a galloping gluer...a brisk builder!

And your KoolWheelz builds are better than mine now! lol

How did you fare with the rear fenders on that one?
I have it marked as an Advanced build...did you find it difficult?

okay then....I'll release another KoolWheelz model...tomorrow?

Don Boose
08-12-2017, 11:06 AM
No problem with the rear fenders, Dave. I downloaded and printed out your assembly instructions, which helped - although I missed the instruction not to score the fuselage sides until it was too late.

I added quick and dirty 3d wheels (Image 1).

Here is the set (since the last post, I cut out the Porsch emblem and added it to the base. Image 2.

While I had no problem with the 935, I did have problems with the 917k. Not the fault of the design. I wasn't able to adhere the upper body assembly to the main body cleanly and it scrunkled up the body somewhat. I am going to build another one more carefully. I include an image, even though this model is not part of the Release Party and it is a sad excuse of a paper model with lots of gaps and wrinkles. Image 3.

Probably won't build the Garner Olds, but will wait for the Audi. Meanwhile, will make a second attempt at the 917k, finish my Automovile Moderne and, after the Audi, go back to airplanes.

Thanks for all the neat, beautifully-designed, models and for this enjoyable project.

I love your little stands.
Are they all paper/card?
Or are they actually wood?

I would really love to add something like that to my own collection.
But with about 100 models, it would take me too long time to build them all,
and I really don't have the room on my shelves.
I barely have room for the car models themselves.
I am struggling now to display them all!

I don't know where the stands originated, but I got the patterns for several different sizes from Don Weeks (rockpaperscissors) and have been accumulating various patterns for ground, pavement, runways, grass, and so on. I will check with "rps Don" to see where he got them from (or if he designed them). They are paper and go together very quickly.

I just finished the DB5, and only one modification i made, i can make the bullet proof screen go up or down, i inserted a centimeter wide piece of scrap paper underneath the slot on the body, and made a single cut in that piece to make friction between it and the screen.

Hope you like it, I did.

One little hint, when doing the rear wheel parts of the Porsche 935, cut and fold the tab that goes under the door first, when you still have the entire piece attached to the surrounding paper.
This is will allow you to have a sharper crease, and not run the risk of making the tapered end go wavey.

Picture to follow in a bit

Hope this helps someone when building this car, or models which have this type of part geometry.

Rick

When folding a part like that I will always clamp the thinnest side and fold the widest side.
But your idea of folding before you cut is an excellent one!
I hope I remember next time.

rickstef
08-13-2017, 07:30 PM
I did that too with the other side, used a straight edge to fold the tab, then I thought of the cut before the rest

In my slow effort to catch up to the Colonel, I present my version of the 2nd place finisher of the 1979 24 Hours of Le Mans.

This was a fun build, to me it was one of my better builds, although there are some glue errors, and an ever so slight offset when tapping on the wheels, but I can deal with it.

I hope you like the pictures.

okay...nice work guys!...thanks
I'm sure there will be a great showing of KoolWheelz models at the IPMC this year.

Too bad I will miss it.

Yes. You heard correctly.
I have been given some bad news today.
Well, not "bad" news, just disappointing for me.

I appreciate everyone who has bought a model, bought a shirt, made a donation...
it really helps...and I will be continuing my efforts with fundraising.
I have not reached my intended goal (for my IPMC and Washington trip) yet,
but to be honest, I'm close enough that I could make it happen.

Unfortunately my Daughter is in a different place.
She has a farm to run and Horses to take care of.
And her Fiancee has confirmed that he will be in his last year of Apprentice school from October to December.
This leaves my Daughter alone to work her job and maintain the farm she lives on
(her Fiancee usually helps out as much as he can, allowing some time to herself).
She also relies on her Fiancee to take care of her four Horses when she cant.

So, she informed me this morning that she will not be able to make the trip this year
although she has given me approval and confirmation for next year.

I told her it was "okay" and that life must come first.
...and I said "well, if nothing else, it gives me more time to pad my account".

And thats about all I can say to you guys at this point.
It'll be a shame to miss the event again, but I am already looking forward to next year.
And I can't say no to my kid.

As a follow up to my announcement...

I'd like to offer my services in the form of a special KoolWheelz model.
Maybe something that fits into the IPMC theme this year.

Rickstef already asked me about a model...we could consider it.
But I''d also like to hear any other suggestions.

I'll design and release a special KoolWheelz model as quickly as possible
so you IPMC guys can get it built in time..

Just my way of apologizing for missing the event,
and to say thank you for your continuing support and understanding.

.................
Goodyear Grabber Olds will be released in a day or two...
.................

in the meantime, lets hear those suggestions for a KoolWheelz model.

I hear that. If her fiancée is finishing up an apprenticeship, you can't stand in the way of that either.

Until further notice, my son has me on alternating weekends. One weekend going to my folks' farm to help out, then going to my son's for Sunday afternoon to watch my grandson so he and Darlene can get stuff done around the house. The next weekend is with them, watching the grandson, so they can get stuff done around the house. I call it a win-win, but paper modeling is going to have to take a back seat for a while. I still have to get MY stuff done around the house, you know.

Hopefully, we can all be in a place to make next year's IPMC a reality

Sorry you can't make it, Dave, but I look forward to seeing you next year.

The IPMC theme is tanks and tankers (International Paper Modelers Convention Awards Rules (http://www.ipmc-info.org/awardsrules.html)). Lotsa room for ingenuity. My vote would be for the modified replica Mark VIII tank used in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, but the War Rig tanker truck from Mad Max: Fury Road would also fit, as would any tanker truck real or imagined.

Tanker ships of all types also fit the theme, but they generally don't have wheelz, kool or otherwise.

And a question: In the trailers to the film, K is shown entering an imposing building that has the Korean hangul characters 행은 (haengeun) inscribed on the doors.

To the best of my knowledge and belief, 행은 is meaningless, while 은행 (eunhaeng) means "bank," which would make sense. [It also means "gingko," as in gingko tree, which led me to make a silly joke with Korean friends: "은행 나무에서 돈을받을 수 있습니까?" (Eunhaeng namueseo don-eulbad-eul su issseubnikka? -can you get money from a gingko tree?)]

Can someone whose Korean language skills are better than mine tell me if 행은 (haengeun) does mean something that would make sense in the context of the film. Or is it a typo for "bank"? Or is this some kind of inside baseball term known to all Blade Runner aficionados?

In any event, I hope to get the Goodyear Grabber Olds done tomorrow, so we must be getting close to that Audi.

Don, I think the building you are referring is where K finds Deckard.
And its definitely not a Bank.
Its a Hotel/Casino for sure.

BBsjZgu7T2U

That lettering on the front windows must be seen in reverse (from the inside).
My Korean is very rusty...
mainly, because I can't read or speak Korean...
so I'm having a hard time recognizing it.
But I think it says "Hotel"...
Theres definitely an H, and an O and a T and a sideways L there. LOL

https://www.mediafire.com/convkey/332c/d3sf060oownpr9n6g.jpg

However Korean language wasn't really a part of the original film.
Japanese was....but not Korean.
So it seems odd that Korean has been included this time.

I guess its possible (but unlikely) that its related to cityspeak (from the original film).
"Cityspeak, gutter talk, a mishmash of Japanese, Spanish, German, what have you."

I have no other answer for you.
But thanks for that Metrokab.

Don Boose

If Dave would indulge me a little further in this discussion of the sign on the Blade Runner 2049 building, I need to make a correction and would like to do a little more speculating.
Doug (SCEtoAUX), in a private message to avoid embarrassing me publicly, pointed out that I had misread the sign, which reads 행운 (haeng un) [“lucky”] and not 행은 (haeng-eun) [bank].

"Lucky" may have some significance. One of the largest of the Korean giant conglomerates (jabeol) is LG, which originally stood for "Lucky Goldstar." And although the founder of the firm used the transliteration 럭키(Leogki = Lucky), rather than the Korean word haeg un, the term may be intended to call up images of Korean jaebol (Japanese zaibatsu), that were the basis for both Japanese and Korean economic development. Those terms call up mixed images of success, wealth, modernity, but also exploitation and corruption in East Asia.

It would also fit for a casino!

It does not seem odd to me that in the world of Blade Runner both Korean and Japanese cultural and language images would appear.

Or maybe I’m overthinking it.

Don

Dave wrote: "Theres definitely an H, and an O and a T and a sideways L there."

"H" = ae; "O" on the top = unspoken place holder, on the bottom = "ng"; "T "= u (rhymes with the "ou" "you"); sideways "L" = n. ㅎ = h, Therefore, 행 - haeng and 운 = un.

Nice work on the 3-dimensional hood scoops, Blake. I just glued mine on flat.

Don

airdave
08-18-2017, 06:53 AM
I think you both glued them flat to the hood, which is the way I intended it.
The scale allows for the card thickness to create a 3D effect.
Both look great.

Blake7...haha...you made exactly the same mistake as I did!
First time I assembled this model, I put one Roof Lamp facing backwards!
LOL
They are so tiny and annoying to work with, aren't they!

A tip for all (including blake7) when installing wheels...
some designers, like me, use "3D" artwork.
I use artwork shading and highlights to simulate an actual 3D surface.

My wheels are flat car with artwork to simulate the 3D surface.

Make sure when installing a part like this you look for the top and bottom of the part.
If its not indicated on the model sheet, then pay attention to the artwork.
Look at the highlights and shadows and think about the overhead light source to get the correct position.

Thanks airdave! I was rushing to finish the model. Sorry. My printer printed the model alittle dark, and the rims were too dark. omg will you slow down?!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol

...
looks good Don, as usual.
Looks extra good on its little base!
Did you apply the three layers to that roof strip? Thats what I did.

Entirely optional...but you can add more card layers to build up that central roof section a bit more.
The actual vehicle has a distinctly raised section that was difficult to include at this scale.
I decided to keep it simple with the layered effect.
Unfortunately, the model sheet has only so much room...hence only three layers.
But, as I said, you can add (if you want to) more card layers for a taller effect.

...
Note to all, the Roof Light is an illuminated tube with a red lens at the top,
and orange/yellow at the bottom.
Try to position it as level as possible between the brackets
...half and half...with the red up top, and yellow down bottom.

I noticed Don's is slightly rotated so as to show a bit more red to the front,
and more yellow light to the rear.
Just wanted to point that out, because it may not be indicated on the model sheet.
(Although the photos should show the position)
A very minor observationl....I'm definitely not picking on Don's build.

Wait a second!...let me take that back!!...my apologies Don!!

After writing that last post, and making a comment about the Johnnycab Roof Light,
I noticed something in the photo I posted earlier.
This photo, below.

See the Roof Lights?

https://www.mediafire.com/convkey/b998/d2ksk341jtdab7j6g.jpg

So, I went back through some of the reference photos of the Johnnycabs...

there were about 6 Johnnycabs built...all a little bit different.
For example, one has a vent grille on the front (hood) of the car...the others don't.
There are a number of small differences.

And it looks like the Roof Lights vary a little bit too.
Obviously, one is red and yellow (top and bottom).

But another is black and yellow, with the yellow on top!!

https://www.mediafire.com/convkey/08f4/oudlwinhidx1sqs6g.jpg

I never noticed this, even though I looked at many photos while designing this model.
And although my version is correct...it makes my criticism of Don's build less correct.

I think the black and yellow light makes more sense...matches the side stripes!

Feel free to place your Roof Light in whatever position you desire!!
Feel free to colour the red part black, and turn it upside down if you like!

Just wanted to own up to my mistake.
Carry on.

Don Boose
08-20-2017, 06:15 PM
I knew it was supposed to be red on top, but it rotated itself a bit while I was assembling it.

I often find that parts of paper models do things contrary to my intentions as I build.

And there are three layers to the roof strip, but not perfectly aligned. See previous sentence.

I assumed the roof light strip would rotate and illuminate the topmost colour to indicate if the cab as for hire or not - the red strip being 'not for hire', so orientation is up to what state you want the cab to be in.

08-21-2017, 05:44 PM
okay...this is it!!
We are down to the last two KoolWheelz models that I have ready for release for August.

I was hoping to make this last for an entire month,
but we know how that worked out...don't we Don?!

LOL

I will prepare the penultimate model for release...but...which one?
The Audi GT Coupe received 7 votes.
The Syd Mead Sentinel Limo also received 7 votes.

Its a toss up...with no way to decide.
What do I do?!

lol Don is so anxious to get back to airplanes, or something!

I know...lets count the votes again.
I see there are two people who voted for both models, so those votes cancel each other out!!

That leaves 5 votes for the Audi GT.
And...oh damn...5 votes for the Sentinel.
That didn't work.

This is not gonna be easy.

Wait!...again!....looks like I voted for the Sentinel.
But I only used one of my votes.
So if I apply my other vote to the Audi...that should do it!

That gives the Audi GT 8 votes in total...and so...
I'll go ahead and release the Sentinel next!!!
Phew, glad we sorted that out.
Gimme a day or so.

Err...Don...where is the rear wing? An integral part of this car.

...and the front wheel is off the ground...
this is why you shouldn't rush! lol

Your front bumper looks a bit misaligned...
I really should have commented on the very narrow folds (front and rear) that are a bit tricky.

The builder has to carefully score and prefold the front and rear panels
to make sure to get that little step at the Bumpers.
It definitely takes a bit of extra care and patience.
Even I struggled with it.

But, I didn't want to cut out the extra angles.
I wanted to keep the proper shape for this car.

Second attempt.

Image 2: The outer surfaces of the tires fit my fountain pen exactly.

All four wheels touch the ground. Wing in place and socks up. Still had some problem with the step above the bumpers, but there it is.
