Found this and decided to slowly build it.

What it will look like:

Started building from the ground up but when the rear pillar was glued to the base and capped I thought that getting the front and rear legs of the elephant to match the span on the platforms capping the pillars might be a problem. So the elephant was constructed, the front pillar glued to the base, then the pillar cap was glued to the front legs of the elephant. The elephant with the pillar cap was then glued to the parts already on the base. Worked out OK. There is no alignment clues as to the position of the pillar caps so I just tried to make sure there were even overhangs around the perimeter of the pillar. The caps are slightly larger in diameter than the pillars.

Great looking model, Doug! Did you get this from the internet or is it a bought kit?

You beat me to it, Doug. I've been intending to build this interesting model for years, but with so many in my stash to choose from it never made it to the top of the list. You build looks excellent so far. I'll be following along with interest, as I do plan on building it someday.

Thank you for that Doug. That looks like a very interesting model. Looking forward to the finished build.
Via your link to the Wurlington tumblr page, if you go to the archive page there is the potential to peruse for hours some seriously cool pictures.

I got to wondering if such a building ever existed, so I had a google ...

This was the best answer I got, and it also threw up a clear scan of the model. ...

Lots of other "Elephant Pagoda" around the East though.

Nice to see another model from the Danish Familien Journal - there must be many more! What size did you print this?

The first printing was on one USLtr size page, but the parts were smaller than I wanted to deal with.

The one I am building now is printed on one 11 x 17 inch page. It would fit on A3 size page.

I have since split the image into two pages and saved as a pdf. It will print on both USLtr and A4 size pages.:)

Here is another photo of the progress:

I added some graphics to the interior because the plain white did not look good at all.

Printed the page with the exteriors on plain paper then realized they were not reversed. Found out they can be cut into the various elements and fit that way instead of trying to fit the entire part as a cohesive insert.

Great idea on the interior detail. The model looks great. Is the pagoda leaning backwards slightly, or is that just a photo distortion?

Photo distortion, the way it is, nature of the build. Who knows. It looks sorta straight in real life, but my eyes ain't as calibrated as they used to be. A straight edge placed along a veritcal line on the body seems to show an even alignment with the pagoda. There will probably be more leaning in the future.:)

This time plain red was used for the interior.

Thanks, folks.:)

The overall height (heighth?:);)) is 10 inches (25.4 cm (25,4)) and the length from tail to tip of tusks is around 4-3/4 inches (12 cm) give or take a few microns.

As stated before the high resolution picture was saved and printed onto one sheet of USLtr size cardstock. It looked to be too small so the picture was enlarged and printed onto one sheet of 11 x 17 cardstock for the build. Then I figured the enlarged picture could be separated into two USLtr pages. The single enlarged picture can also be printed onto one A3 size cardstock sheet and the separated pages can also be printed onto two A4 size cardstock sheets.

The original picture that was saved was cleaned up a bit to eliminate as much of the brownish discoloration without seriously altering the vintage look of the model. The color balance, saturation, and contrast can be manipulated to get the look you want and also to help preserve the vintage look.
