Hello!
I`d like show you my newest project. This time will be something from Golden Age of air races in USA from 30` last century: Folkerst SK-3 "Jupiter" from 1937.
Photos:

More about this interesting aircraft:

The model will be as always in 1:50 scale. I hope that it will be like you. :)
Special thanks for Piotter for help.

Best regards.

Those old racers sure had nice lines. Looks like you are off to a good start

It's good news that you will be building this historic racer in 1/50. I hope to see it available for purchase some day.

Hello!
Thank you B-Manic and Don Boose! :)
I think that after Folkerts comes time to do something famous. Maybe A6M Zero.
In the model fixed the front and added rudder.
By the way I have a request to colleagues.
If somebody has any materials (documentations) to Folkerst from books, albums etc., please help.
I'm looking for information on:
- interior of the cabin and its color.
- the exact colors of the image on the fuselage (with inscription "Jupiter")
- the color of the gear cavity.
I`ll be very grateful for any help.

Best regards.

Not sure if you've seen this image or not, but it is an early Kodachrome shot of the aircraft. Might help if you haven't seen it before.

Hello!
Ashrunner: thank you very much! :) I has this photograph, but in the small size. This is bigger and shows more details.
Gil: this is great websize! Thank you! :)
shrike: on internet isn`t many info about this plane. Well, it is necessary to design the model on the basis of what is had. :)

Next part of design.

Best regards.

I have a reasonably large library (unreasonably large according to my kids) with quite a few air racing books, but no colour pictures of the SK-3.
I do have a set of 1930's aircraft colour chips, so we can make an educated guess from what was available at the time.

Interior of the landing gear doors was probably bare aluminium to save weight. Photos of the airplane before it was covered show all of the tubing in a light colour - probably silver or grey. Either one would be a common option.
The interior of the cockpit would show the backside of the fabric covering. This would have been aluminium silver bleeding through the cotton cloth.
So for all of the interior work, shades of grey would be authentic unless you want to print in silver.

I'll get out the colour chips and look at what was likely for 'Yellow Cream with Red' as described by Mendenhall.
Do you want raw scans, RBG, Hex or CYMK colours?

Hello!
Thank you shrike for your notices. I supposed interior of the landing gear doors could be bare aluminium or grey. On picture looks that interior was darker than fuselage. Can see also a little of inside of pilot`s cabine. I think it is in dark grey (I don`t suppose so the inside was the green colour like in military planes).
I`d scan, please.

Best regards.

It's looking very good, Krzychu74.

Some years ago, a modeler designed and built a beautiful stick and tissue rubber-powered free-flight version of this airplane. The builder developed an innovative "thin crust" system for the fuselage. I saw it fly at Geneseo, New York, and it was a real beauty. I can't wait for your 1/50 version to be completed and available.

Don Boose: thank you very much! I`m pleased that my project like you.:)
I think that the model will be ready and available in the Chris` shop or up to the end of July or at the beginning of the August. :)

I made a few details of the gear.

Attached is a scan of a Randolph colour chip set. I'm not certain of the date, but they still make all of these colours now. I have several more sets, but this was the easiest to scan and should be representative of the colours available at the time.
Mendenhall describes the SK-3 as 'Yellow cream with red trim', but Ash's photo shows almost white, but early colour photography was better known for it's vibrancy than subtle shades.

If we believe Mendenhall:
"Diana Cream" was available from all of the manufacturers of aircraft paints and dopes - Glidaire, Berryloid, Titanine - so that would be my guess for the base colour.

If we compromise between photos and description, 'Ivory' might be a good choice

"Red" leaves a lot of room for speculation. Either the Champion or Tennessee red would go well with the cream, but "ll leave that up to you.

What wonderful names aviation colors had in those days! Remember "Camoutint Pink"?

I do hope that Jupiter really was painted "Diana Cream" and "Tennessee Red"!

Meanwhile, that undercarriage looks good -- and somewhat more complicated than I had remembered. You sure do good work, Krzychu74.

I don't know - there's something poetic about Stearman Vermillion :D

Nice work - this is one I'll add to my want list when it's done I'm sure ;)

Hello!
shrike: thank you very much for your help and explaining about colours! :) I think that "Diana Cream" and "Tennessee Red" will be good and even not like it sounds! :)
Don Boose and dansls1: at one time people probably had more poetic souls, not what today, heartless numbers of paints... FS, RLM, RAL ect. ;)
Ashrunner: thank you! :)

I did the inside of the cabin...
