I'm not saying any more about it yet.

Ok, so it's the blaster used by the crew of the C57D, from the 1956 film Forbidden Planet, also used in "The Queen of Space" and various Twilght Zone episodes.

I think it's one of the great classic sci-fi icons like Robby the robot and the Interocitor (this Island Earth).

3D model created in Blender and UV textures inked in PSP9. exporting to Pepakura as Lightwave .OBJ files.

Thanks Janx.

The transfer to Pepakura. There seem to be fewer problems importing OBJ to Pepakura, rather than 3DS.

I like the idea Milleniumfalsehood. Maybe coat the insulators in superglue to give a semi-translucent/frosted appearance. It would also help to stiffen-up the 'insulators'.

Yep Robby the Robot and the first soundtrack to use synthesisers.Quite an important film in the Scifi world along with Metropolis and 2001 it helped to set the standards.

As a side note, Disney animated the special effects for the blasters and the monster.

I think I came upon Forbidden Planet quite late, possibly even after Star Wars. I was nuts about scifi films as a kid; The Day The Earth stood still; When worlds Collide; Quatermass and the pit; and I think I watched everything I could find on TV; The tomorrow people; Doctor Who; (Roberts Robots:D); Deathwatch; Trek of course.
The first time I saw Forbidden Planet, it blew me away. I couldn't believe it had got by me. In the few science fiction movie books I had at the time, there was no mention of it. If only I had the internet back then.. (Hmm! 15 year old boy with the internet.... probably wouldn't be researching '50s scifi films;))

Anyway, not much progress. I have built up some of the body, but as this is a relatively big build, I was relying on glue tabs, directly on each ring. Unfortunately, I am getting fit issus between some of the rings so I shall probably have a quick redesign and add intermediate rings of tabs between each section (like most model rocket builders use). That should give a nice clean (uncrumpled!) finish.

I know I would of used it to do my homework as well:D

That is of course what I meant.:D

Meanwhile, inbetween the Tour de France and the new Torchwood series, I have made some minor mods to the model.

Added internal rings of glue tabs to the main body;
Re-textured the body to improve transitions between the highlights;
Slight modifications to the shape of the 'brass' nozzle.
I've also added a simple stand

http://i289.photobucket.com/albums/ll235/drmeacham/Paper%20Models/NoName/th_C57DBlasterfinaltex4.jpg (http://s289.photobucket.com/albums/ll235/drmeacham/Paper%20Models/NoName/C57DBlasterfinaltex4.jpg)

I might make the stand a bit more adventurous (like the United Planets insignia, maybe), but I want to keep it simple

Thanks for the complements guys:D

Well, I redesigned and rebuilt the body with tab-rings, but the build still didn't fit very well. Some of the rings still did not match up:( Anyway, here is the build of the front of the body and some of the ribs:

http://i289.photobucket.com/albums/ll235/drmeacham/Paper%20Models/NoName/th_DSC_0003.jpg (http://s289.photobucket.com/albums/ll235/drmeacham/Paper%20Models/NoName/DSC_0003.jpg) http://i289.photobucket.com/albums/ll235/drmeacham/Paper%20Models/NoName/th_P7130059.jpg (http://s289.photobucket.com/albums/ll235/drmeacham/Paper%20Models/NoName/P7130059.jpg) http://i289.photobucket.com/albums/ll235/drmeacham/Paper%20Models/NoName/th_P7130060.jpg (http://s289.photobucket.com/albums/ll235/drmeacham/Paper%20Models/NoName/P7130060.jpg) http://i289.photobucket.com/albums/ll235/drmeacham/Paper%20Models/NoName/th_P7130062.jpg (http://s289.photobucket.com/albums/ll235/drmeacham/Paper%20Models/NoName/P7130062.jpg)

The middle of the body is just a simple cyclinder with end caps, so I have no pics of that. (I didn't take any pictures of the grip on its own either, because it was so crooked! I blame the card;))

The end cap:

http://i289.photobucket.com/albums/ll235/drmeacham/Paper%20Models/NoName/th_DSC_0116.jpg (http://s289.photobucket.com/albums/ll235/drmeacham/Paper%20Models/NoName/DSC_0116.jpg) http://i289.photobucket.com/albums/ll235/drmeacham/Paper%20Models/NoName/th_DSC_0121.jpg (http://s289.photobucket.com/albums/ll235/drmeacham/Paper%20Models/NoName/DSC_0121.jpg) http://i289.photobucket.com/albums/ll235/drmeacham/Paper%20Models/NoName/th_DSC_0122.jpg (http://s289.photobucket.com/albums/ll235/drmeacham/Paper%20Models/NoName/DSC_0122.jpg)

the pdfs are in A4 format, but the layout should fit on both A4 and Letter size paper.

There are no instructions as such, but the parts are numbered. Most of the model is made of rings, so these are numbered in sequence from the pointy end (#1) to the blunt end (#47)

Some parts are probably best made by laminating them up to a width of 3mm. these would be: the two large rings of the 'brass' nozzle; the ribs around the body and the ring on the back.

The body rings can either be assembled using the tabs on each part, or alternatively, some of these can be removed and the tab rings on page 9 can be used. These are numbered with refernce to the body ring they attach to so, for example, tab rings 34a and 34b attach to part 34.

The central radial rib-ring (parts #61, #62, #63) should be put in place while one end of par #34 is still open. The rib-ring is held in the correct position by the three 'linear' ribs, so it does not necessarily need to be glued in position.

The best of luck. If anyone makes one, please post pictures!
